To buy Fortescue shares on the Australian Securities Exchange (ASX), open an account with a broker that offers ASX trading, fund it, then place an order for Fortescue. You choose the quantity and order price; the broker submits it to the exchange. Once the order executes, payment is due within two days under ASX’s T+2 settlement guidance. Buying the shares is separate from managing the holding later through Fortescue’s share registry.
1. Choose a broker that supports ASX shares
ASX distinguishes between online brokers, which execute self-directed orders without recommendations, and full-service brokers or financial advisers, who may provide recommendations and related services. Their fees, service levels and account arrangements vary. ASX does not recommend a particular provider, so check each broker’s current terms and services before opening an account.
Compare the details that affect how you will trade and hold shares:
- Market access: Confirm that the broker offers ASX-listed shares and, if you live outside Australia, accepts clients in your country.
- Service and advice: An execution-only broker places the orders you direct; do not treat that service as personalised investment advice. Ask a qualified adviser if you need advice tailored to your circumstances.
- Costs and account requirements: Check brokerage and other charges, minimums, funding arrangements, and any cash-management account requirement in the provider’s current documents.
- Holding structure: Ask whether your shares will be broker-sponsored under your own HIN or held through an omnibus arrangement, and how the broker records corporate actions.
ASIC MoneySmart explains that a HIN links shares bought through a broker. It also warns that investors in some omnibus HIN arrangements are not the legal owner of their shares and have fewer protections, including National Guarantee Fund claim protections. Read the account’s legal terms so you understand how the holding is structured. ASIC MoneySmart’s HIN guidance

If you live outside Australia
ASX says non-Australian residents need an international broker or financial adviser in their country of residence that allows trading in ASX-listed securities. Availability depends on the provider and your location; confirm both before applying. ASX: buying and selling shares
2. Open and fund your brokerage account
Apply through the broker you have selected and complete its identity and account-opening requirements. You may also need a cash-management account to transfer money for trades. ASX says account setup can take up to a week, although it is usually arranged within 24 hours; this is general guidance, not a timing promise from any individual broker. Check the provider’s current process and wait until the account is approved and funded before entering an order. ASX: buying and selling shares

3. Find Fortescue and place your order
In your broker’s trading platform, find Fortescue’s ASX-listed shares and enter the quantity and price you want. The broker submits your order to the exchange. ASX says orders generally match first by price and then by time priority. An order executes only if it matches with another order, so it may not trade at the displayed price—or at all. Your broker should provide confirmation if a trade occurs. ASX: buying and selling shares

ASX explains that investors decide “how many securities you want to buy or sell and the price for those securities.” Choose an order type and price only after checking how your broker describes its trading options; the order controls available can differ between platforms. This guide does not recommend a price or a quantity.
4. Settle the trade and check your holding record
After execution, ASX says payment is due within two days (T+2). Follow your broker’s settlement instructions and check its confirmation and account records to verify the trade and resulting holding. If the shares are CHESS-sponsored, you receive a HIN associated with broker-sponsored holdings; ASX holding statements identify the sponsoring broker. A HIN or exchange settlement does not protect you from losses if the share price falls. ASX: buying and selling shares · ASX: CHESS
5. Use Fortescue’s registry for shareholder administration
Fortescue names MUFG Corporate Markets as its share registry. Its Investor Centre is for managing an existing holding and shareholder communications; it is not where you place an order to buy shares on the ASX. Fortescue shareholder information
Fortescue also offers an optional Dividend Reinvestment Plan (DRP). Registered shareholders with an Australian or New Zealand address are eligible; participation for holders without such an address is at the board’s discretion. The DRP concerns how eligible shareholders may receive dividends, not how to acquire shares in the market. Check Fortescue’s current terms before making any election. Can you buy Fortescue exposure outside the ASX?
Fortescue says it has a Level 1 American Depositary Receipt (ADR) program traded on OTCQX. One depositary receipt represents two ASX-listed ordinary shares, and Citigroup is the depositary bank. An ADR is distinct from buying ordinary shares directly on the ASX; ask your broker and the depositary about current availability, fees and eligibility before considering that route. Fortescue’s Investor Centre reports FY26 historical results of 201.3 million tonnes of iron ore shipments, US$3.5 billion underlying net profit after tax, US$3.2 billion free cash flow and an A$1.08 per-share fully franked dividend. These are issuer-reported results for FY26, not forecasts or a reason by themselves to buy. A dividend may change, and past results do not establish future performance. Fortescue Investor Centre

Buying shares involves investment risk and the possibility of losing money. ASX says the National Guarantee Fund applies only in specific circumstances; it does not compensate investors for trading losses caused by market events or investment choices based on poor advice. Check current broker documents and official issuer information, and seek appropriately qualified advice if you need help assessing whether an investment suits your circumstances.
