To buy China Construction Bank shares through a brokerage, first choose which listing you want: Hong Kong H-shares (ticker 939) or Shanghai A-shares (ticker 601939). You need a broker that supports the relevant market and, for A-shares bought through Northbound Stock Connect, you and the security must meet the programme’s eligibility rules. Confirm the instrument, costs, currency, lot handling and custody terms with your broker before placing an order.
Which China Construction Bank listing should you buy?
China Construction Bank (CCB) has two distinct listings. Its H-shares trade on the Main Board of the Hong Kong Stock Exchange under ticker 939; its A-shares trade on the Shanghai Stock Exchange under ticker 601939, according to CCB’s shareholder information.
| Listing | Market and ticker | Stated board lot | Typical access route |
|---|---|---|---|
| H-shares | Hong Kong Stock Exchange Main Board, 939 | 1,000 shares per block, as stated by CCB; verify current dealing rules with your broker. | A brokerage account with Hong Kong market access. |
| A-shares | Shanghai Stock Exchange, 601939 | 100 shares per block, as stated by CCB; verify current dealing rules with your broker. | For eligible Hong Kong and overseas investors, Northbound Stock Connect through a participating broker, subject to investor and security eligibility. |
The codes identify different share classes on different exchanges; they are not interchangeable. Search for the exchange and ticker together in your broker’s platform, then confirm the company and share class shown on the order ticket.
How to buy CCB H-shares through a broker
The Hong Kong route is the straightforward option if your broker offers Hong Kong shares. CCB confirms that its H-shares trade as 939. The precise menus and order types vary by provider, so use the broker’s current trading instructions rather than assuming every platform works the same way.

- Check access and eligibility. Confirm that the broker accepts Hong Kong share orders for your country of residence and account type.
- Fund the account. Check the trading currency, funding options, currency-conversion rate or fee, and any cash requirements in the broker’s terms.
- Find the exact instrument. Search Hong Kong Stock Exchange ticker 939 and verify that the instrument is CCB H-shares.
- Review the order details. Check the order type, price, quantity, board-lot or odd-lot handling, available cash and any warnings displayed by the broker. CCB states a board lot of 1,000 H-shares, but confirm how your broker handles orders that do not match a full lot.
- Review charges and submit only if the order is correct. Check the broker’s current commission and other applicable market, custody or conversion charges before confirming.
How to access CCB A-shares through Northbound Stock Connect
Northbound Stock Connect links Hong Kong and Shanghai markets, allowing eligible investors to trade qualifying Shanghai-listed securities through a participating broker. The Shanghai Stock Exchange describes the investor and programme rules on its Stock Connect eligibility page; CCB’s Shanghai ticker is 601939. This route does not make every Shanghai-listed share available to every investor.
- Ask your broker whether it offers Northbound Stock Connect. Confirm that the service is available for your location, account type and chosen trading account.
- Check CCB’s current eligibility. Verify that 601939 is currently an eligible security under the programme. The SSE’s Stock Connect overview explains the cross-market mechanism, while its eligibility rules describe which securities qualify.
- Meet the broker’s account and settlement requirements. Requirements differ by provider. For example, CCB (Asia) says its Northbound customers need a securities trading cash account and an RMB settlement account; these are that provider’s terms, not a universal rule. See CCB (Asia)’s Northbound Stock Connect information.
- Fund and identify the Shanghai instrument. Follow the broker’s funding and currency instructions, then confirm that the order ticket refers to Shanghai ticker 601939 rather than Hong Kong ticker 939.
- Check the order, lot size and costs. CCB states a 100-share A-share board lot. Confirm the broker’s current order-size rules, order types, settlement arrangements and full charge schedule before submitting.
CCB (Asia)’s online securities FAQ illustrates one provider’s order flow: selecting a market, order type and securities account. Other brokers may use different screens and offer different order types.

Compare the two routes before placing an order
| What to compare | H-shares, Hong Kong | A-shares, Shanghai via Northbound Stock Connect |
|---|---|---|
| Market access | Broker must support Hong Kong trading. | Broker must support Northbound Stock Connect. |
| Eligibility | Confirm account and country availability with the broker. | Confirm both investor eligibility and current eligibility of CCB’s security. |
| Currency and settlement | Ask about trading currency, funding and conversion. | Ask about settlement currency, funding and any required RMB account; requirements depend on the provider. |
| Trading and holding costs | Obtain current broker charges, including commission, market charges, custody charges if applicable, and foreign-exchange costs. | Obtain current broker and programme-related charges, plus any custody and currency-conversion costs. |
| Order and lot handling | CCB states a 1,000-share board lot; check the broker’s current handling of board lots and odd lots. | CCB states a 100-share board lot; check the broker’s current order-size rules. |
| Custody and corporate actions | Ask how the broker and custodian record your interest and handle dividends, voting and other corporate actions. | Ask how the broker and custody chain record your interest and handle corporate actions through the programme. |
There is no single broker fee or account requirement that applies to every reader: the answer depends on residence, provider and account. Obtain the broker’s current, location-specific disclosures rather than relying on an old fee table or assuming another provider’s rules apply.

A brokerage purchase may be recorded through a nominee and custody chain rather than as a direct registration in your own name. CCB’s 2026 half-year report describes HKSCC Nominees holding H-shares for registered investors and Hong Kong Securities Clearing Company holding Northbound A-shares for Hong Kong and overseas investors as at 30 June 2026: CCB financial reports. Ask your broker who holds the shares, how beneficial ownership is reflected in your account, and how the arrangement affects voting, dividends, transfers and other corporate actions. The treatment depends on the account and custody terms.
