You can buy China Construction Bank Corporation (CCB) shares through a broker that supports the relevant exchange: Hong Kong H-shares (code 939 or 00939) or Shanghai A-shares (code 601939). These are different listings with different market access, trading rules, currencies and lot sizes. Check your broker’s current access and eligibility requirements before opening or funding an account.
Choose between CCB’s Hong Kong and Shanghai listings
CCB has two ordinary-share routes. The codes identify different exchange listings of the same issuer, not interchangeable order tickets. Confirm the exchange and share class shown by your broker before placing an order. CCB’s shareholder information and 2025 half-year report identify the listings and codes.
| Listing | What to search | Practical details |
|---|---|---|
| Hong Kong H-shares | China Construction Bank, code 939 or 00939 | CCB reports a standard board lot of 1,000 H-shares. Your broker must support Hong Kong-listed securities. Source: CCB General Shareholder Information. |
| Shanghai A-shares | China Construction Bank, code 601939 | Overseas investors may be able to buy eligible shares through Shanghai Northbound Stock Connect, if their broker participates and their account and location qualify. CCB reports a standard board lot of 100 A-shares. Source: CCB General Shareholder Information. |
Stock Connect is a route to selected Shanghai-listed securities, not access to every A-share. CCB’s corresponding H-share is consistent with the eligibility category described for Northbound trading, but check whether 601939 is currently eligible and available through your broker. Check broker access and account requirements
Before opening or funding an account, confirm the broker supports your intended market and accepts clients in your country. For Hong Kong shares, ask whether Hong Kong trading is enabled on your account. For Shanghai A-shares, ask specifically about Northbound Stock Connect, retail-client eligibility, and CCB’s current security eligibility.
#1 Best Overall
Account and funding rules depend on the provider and your location. For example, CCB (Asia)’s Northbound service information says customers need a securities cash account and an RMB settlement account. That is a provider-specific example, not a universal requirement. Check the broker’s current account-opening, funding, settlement and withdrawal terms.
Compare order rules, costs and currency exposure
- Lot size: CCB reports standard lots of 1,000 H-shares and 100 A-shares. CCB (Asia)’s Northbound service describes 100-share buy lots; check how your broker handles order quantities and whether it accepts odd lots.
- Order types and settlement: CCB (Asia) describes limit orders only, no day trading, and RMB cash settlement on trade day plus one for its Northbound service. These are service-specific terms; another broker may differ.
- Fees: Check commission, exchange and regulatory charges, custody or account fees, and any currency-conversion spread. The applicable amounts depend on your broker; the available information does not establish fees for your account.
- Currency: Shanghai Northbound shares are RMB-denominated. If your home currency is not RMB, exchange-rate movements can affect the value of your investment and the amount you receive when converting proceeds.
- Operational rules: Ask about execution, cancellation, statements, tax documents and corporate-action handling. Stock Connect also operates under eligible-security and quota conditions; consult current broker and HKEX terms.
Place and verify an order
- Choose the listing: decide whether you want Hong Kong H-shares or Shanghai A-shares, taking account of access, trading rules, settlement currency and lot size.
- Confirm the route: verify that your account is enabled for Hong Kong trading or Shanghai Northbound Stock Connect, as applicable, and that you can trade the security.
- Fund the account: meet the broker’s cash and currency requirements. For a Northbound order, check whether you need an RMB balance.
- Find the security: search for China Construction Bank and verify the exchange, code and share class in the order ticket: 939/00939 for Hong Kong H-shares or 601939 for Shanghai A-shares.
- Review the order: choose an order type supported by the broker, enter a quantity that meets its lot rules, and check the estimated total and charges before submission.
- Check status: confirm whether the order is pending, partially filled, filled or rejected. Submitting an instruction does not guarantee an exchange execution.
Understand the risks and changing conditions
CCB (Asia)’s Northbound risk disclosure says: “The prices of securities fluctuate, sometimes dramatically. The price of a security may move up or down, and may become valueless.” The bank also warns of currency risk for non-RMB investors and possible trading restrictions or suspensions arising from quota or eligibility changes. These are general service disclosures, not an assessment of your personal circumstances. Read CCB (Asia)’s Stock Connect service information.
