The most clearly documented route for an investor outside mainland China is to buy China Construction Bank’s Hong Kong-listed H-shares through a broker that offers Hong Kong Stock Exchange (HKEX) trading and accepts clients resident in your country. Search for China Construction Bank, ticker 939 or stock code 00939. CCB also has Shanghai-listed A-shares, but access to those shares through Stock Connect depends on eligibility that should be checked rather than assumed.

Which China Construction Bank shares can you buy?

China Construction Bank (CCB) has two listed ordinary-share lines. The issuer identifies its H-shares on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange under ticker 939 and its A-shares on the Shanghai Stock Exchange under ticker 601939. The H-shares began trading on 27 October 2005; the A-shares began trading on 25 September 2007, according to CCB’s investor FAQ.

Share line Exchange and identifier Access route relevant to overseas investors Issuer-stated block size
H-shares Hong Kong Stock Exchange; 939 / 00939 Brokerage account with HKEX trading, subject to the broker accepting residents of your country 1,000 shares
A-shares Shanghai Stock Exchange; 601939 Potential Northbound Stock Connect access to eligible mainland securities; current CCB eligibility and broker support are not established here 100 shares

These are distinct listings, not interchangeable ticker formats. This guide does not establish that the two share classes have the same price, liquidity, shareholder rights, economic treatment, or tax outcome.

How to buy CCB H-shares through a broker

  1. Find a broker that supports Hong Kong shares. Confirm that the broker both accepts customers resident in your country and permits trading on HKEX. Availability, account requirements, and protections vary by jurisdiction.
  2. Check the account’s costs and mechanics before depositing. Review commission and minimum charges, exchange fees, currency conversion, custody charges, dividend handling, settlement arrangements, and the currency used for the trade. These depend on the broker and your account; do not assume they are the same across providers.
  3. Search for the correct listing. In the broker’s platform, look for China Construction Bank, ticker 939, or stock code 00939, and verify that the instrument is the Hong Kong H-share listing rather than the Shanghai A-share.
  4. Check the order size and live order ticket. CCB’s investor FAQ states a block size of 1,000 H-shares. Ask the broker whether it accepts odd-lot orders and what rules apply; the issuer’s figure does not establish how a specific broker handles smaller orders.
  5. Review the order and place it only if it suits your circumstances. Confirm the share line, quantity, order type, currency, and any displayed costs. The steps explain market access, not whether CCB is suitable for your portfolio.

Can overseas investors buy CCB A-shares through Stock Connect?

Possibly, but the general existence of Stock Connect does not establish that CCB’s Shanghai shares are currently eligible for Northbound trading or that your particular broker offers the route. HKEX describes Northbound Stock Connect as access for international investors to selected mainland securities, subject to eligible-security and participant requirements. Check the current eligible-security information and your broker’s supported instruments before relying on it; the HKEX overview is available at Stock Connect Explained.

Southbound Stock Connect is a different channel: it is described for qualified mainland investors trading eligible Hong Kong shares. It is not a general access route for someone living outside mainland China. HKEX reported 564 Southbound stocks and 23 ETFs at the end of December 2025, but those broader program figures do not show whether CCB’s A-shares qualify for Northbound access. See HKEX’s Stock Connect 2025 Review.

Does CCB have an ADR or another overseas ticker?

A current CCB American depositary receipt or OTC depositary-receipt ticker is not established by the available official sources. Do not assume an ADR exists or search using a guessed ticker. The overseas listing confirmed by CCB in the cited investor information is its Hong Kong H-share line, 939 / 00939.

What to know after buying shares

CCB’s 2025 annual report names Computershare Hong Kong Investor Services as the H-share registrar for shareholder administration and enquiries. A registrar handles matters relating to an existing holding; it is not a broker or a venue for buying shares. The report also notes that H-share holders were offered the option to receive 2025 interim dividends in RMB for the first time. That is a period-specific arrangement, not a guarantee about future dividends or payment options. See CCB’s 2025 annual report.

What to verify before investing

  • Your broker serves residents of your country and supports the specific HKEX listing.
  • The order ticket identifies 939 / 00939 H-shares, not Shanghai code 601939.
  • Current lot and odd-lot rules, trading hours, settlement currency, and order types are clear to you.
  • All commissions, minimums, exchange charges, currency conversion, custody, and dividend-related fees are understood.
  • If pursuing A-shares, current Northbound eligibility and your broker’s access are confirmed directly rather than inferred from Stock Connect’s general description.
  • You have considered your own investment objectives, risk tolerance, and tax position. This article does not evaluate CCB’s valuation, outlook, or suitability.
