You may be able to buy Bitcoin with a credit card in Germany, but whether it works depends on the exchange, your specific card and your issuer. Before paying, verify the provider’s authorisation, confirm card eligibility, compare the final euro charge with the Bitcoin you will receive, and understand where the Bitcoin will be held. A secure payment process does not make Bitcoin a safe investment: BaFin warns that crypto-assets can lose substantial value, including all of it.
Before buying: understand the risks
There are two separate questions: whether the purchase process is secure and whether Bitcoin is a suitable investment for you. Authentication and authorised providers can reduce some transaction risks; they cannot prevent Bitcoin’s price from falling. BaFin’s consumer warning, published on 13 January 2021, says crypto-assets can suffer substantial losses, including total loss, because of high volatility and possible illiquidity. That warning is risk guidance, not a price forecast. Read BaFin’s crypto-asset risk warning.
Do not borrow or carry a credit-card balance to buy a volatile asset. Interest and other card charges can add to a loss if Bitcoin’s value falls.

Check the provider’s authorisation in Germany
Do not rely on a familiar brand name, a polished website or a German-language interface as proof that a platform is authorised. Check the legal entity that will serve you—not just the exchange’s brand—and confirm its status in official records.

- BITCOIN EXCLUSIVE, PHONE VERIFICATION: Bitkey is designed from the ground up exclusively for bitcoin — a dedicated hardware wallet for secure bitcoin storage. Approve transactions with a tap using your phone and NFC. No device screen is required.
- SELF-CUSTODY, NO EXCHANGE OR CUSTODIAN REQUIRED: You hold two of the three keys in the Bitkey system – one on your phone and one on your Bitkey device. The third is stored on Bitkey’s server and cannot move your bitcoin on its own.
- NO SEED PHRASE: Set up and use Bitkey without creating or storing a seed phrase.
- 2-of-3 MULTISIG: Three keys are stored separately across your phone, Bitkey device, and Bitkey’s server. Any two keys are required to move your bitcoin.
- BUILT-IN RECOVERY: Encrypted backup and recovery tools can help you regain access if you lose your phone or Bitkey device. You can also designate a Recovery Contact.
BaFin says MiCA authorisation and supervision requirements for crypto-asset service providers have applied since 30 December 2024. BaFin explains that an authorised provider’s approval is published in its company database and the ESMA MiCA register; an EU-authorised provider may offer services across the EU after the relevant passport notification. Check the provider’s legal entity and permission in those records, and confirm that it supports German customers. BaFin’s guidance on crypto-asset service providers and its company database information explain where to check.
Authorisation is not an endorsement of Bitcoin or a guarantee against losses. BaFin has also warned consumers about online trading platforms and authorisation requirements. Read BaFin’s warning about online trading platforms.

Check whether your card and issuer will work
Card acceptance varies by provider and card. A provider may accept a card network while your card issuer still declines the transaction or applies its own fees. Ask your issuer whether the specific card permits crypto purchases and whether it treats them as a cash advance or charges a foreign-transaction fee.
| Provider information | What to verify |

| Kraken’s German customer payment-method page lists Visa and Mastercard, with EUR processing. It lists a €10 minimum and a €5,000 limit per seven days; these are changeable provider limits, not general rules. Kraken’s German payment methods | Kraken says the account must be verified, the Visa or Mastercard must be in the same legal name, the customer must live in a supported region, and customers outside the US need 3D Secure. Check the live terms and checkout because eligibility and limits can change. Kraken’s card purchase requirements |
| Coinbase’s European payment-method table describes 3D Secure card purchases as instant. Coinbase payment methods for European customers | Coinbase says it no longer supports linking new credit cards. Its buying guidance also says some issuers block digital-currency purchases and may charge additional fees on existing linked credit cards. How to make the purchase
- Reach the provider independently. Type its official address or use its official app rather than following an advertisement, unsolicited message or link from someone offering investment help. Confirm the legal entity and its status in the official registers.
- Verify your account. Complete the provider’s identity checks and make sure Germany is supported. Use a card in your own legal name if the provider requires it.
- Check compatibility before submitting. Confirm the card type is accepted, that your issuer permits crypto purchases, and that you can complete 3D Secure. Kraken says authentication for non-US cards may use a password, one-time PIN or banking-app approval. Never tell a caller or message sender a one-time code, even if they claim to be helping with the purchase.
- Review the complete order. Compare the total euro charge with the amount of BTC to be delivered. Check the displayed transaction fee, exchange rate and any spread included in the quoted price. Kraken says its card fee appears on the final confirmation page and that a spread may also be included. Your issuer may add separate charges.
- Confirm only when every detail is right. Check the BTC amount, total charge, card and destination account. Kraken states that initiated card purchases are final and non-refundable; its card guidance also says a withdrawal hold of up to 72 hours may apply. Other providers may have different rules, so read the relevant terms before confirming.
Decide where to hold the Bitcoin
After purchase, Bitcoin may remain in an account with the provider or be transferred to a wallet you control. Keeping it with a provider means relying on that account’s access and custody arrangements. Self-custody means you must protect the private keys and recovery information: losing them can mean losing access to the Bitcoin.
The European supervisory authorities advise consumers to consider whether the devices used to buy, store or transfer crypto-assets—and those used to hold private keys—are secure. A hardware wallet is one optional category for people choosing self-custody; it is not required to buy by card and does not prevent price losses, phishing or loss of recovery information. Read the European supervisory authorities’ crypto-asset warning.
