Visitors can get a SUBE card at an authorized point in Argentina, or use the government’s online purchase option if its pickup or delivery arrangements fit their trip. You can use the card without assuming that online registration is available to every foreign visitor: the official pages reviewed do not clearly confirm whether a visitor without an Argentine DNI can register with a passport.
Where to buy a SUBE card
Argentina’s official guidance says foreigners can obtain a SUBE card at authorized points by paying the applicable charge. The government’s SUBE information page describes obtaining a card at authorized locations. Check the current list of points, local stock and price before making a special trip; published prices can change.
The government also offers an online purchase route. Its terms describe pickup at a SUBE service center or post office, as well as home delivery. Those choices only make sense if you can reach the collection point or receive a delivery during your stay. Check the current terms against your itinerary and payment options; the official information reviewed does not establish that checkout works from every country or with every payment method.

The government’s online terms list card totals of ARS 1,500 for pickup at a SUBE service center, ARS 8,943 for pickup at a post office branch, and ARS 9,996 for home delivery. These are the amounts shown on the undated terms page accessed October 4, 2026, not guaranteed current quotes. The same terms say an online-purchased card is not delivered registered; register it yourself if you want account features.

Should a visitor register the card?
Registration provides account features, including a way to seek recovery of the balance if the card is lost or damaged, access to trip information and discounts, online account operations, and transport information. The SUBE registration FAQ describes these benefits and several registration routes. Its pages do not describe registration as a universal condition for every visitor to buy or use a card.
The key uncertainty for short-term visitors is identity verification: the official pages reviewed do not clearly establish whether someone without an Argentine DNI can register online using a passport, or which foreign identity details the live form accepts. Do not assume passport acceptance, but do not assume registration is impossible either. If recovering a balance would matter to you, contact SUBE support before relying on registration; the FAQ lists 0800-777-SUBE (7823), option 3.

How registration works
SUBE’s FAQ lists registration through its official online form using the card number and personal data, by phone, at a service center with an identity document, or through the Android app. The terms say online registration has no age restriction; app registration is available from age 13.

Check the current instructions for the method available to you and for any identity-document requirements before starting.

Loading and using the balance
Electronic top-ups can be made through the SUBE app, digital wallets, home banking or ATMs. An electronic load may need to be credited to the physical card using NFC in the Android app, Carga a Bordo on supported vehicles, or an automatic SUBE terminal. A July 22, 2026 Argentina.gob.ar notice states a maximum electronic load of ARS 30,000 per transaction and a maximum card balance of ARS 40,000; these operational limits can change.
The official FAQ says card balance does not expire and describes SUBE use on public transport in 61 localities, including participating buses, subways, trains, metrobuses, trolleybuses and boats. Coverage is not a guarantee that every service or destination accepts SUBE, so confirm participation for the route you plan to take.

Do tourists get the Tarifa Social discount?
No general tourist discount is described. The Tarifa Social Federal is for qualifying beneficiary groups, and the official FAQ says the benefit is attached to the person’s principal SUBE card. It states a 55% discount against the reference fare identified as current to June 30, 2026; eligibility rules and fare basis are time-sensitive. Registering a card by itself does not make a visitor eligible.
