To buy the right new computer, start with the apps and tasks you need it to handle, then choose a laptop or desktop, set a budget, and compare the exact configuration—not just the processor name. Check memory, storage, graphics, screen and ports against your workload, and review the seller, warranty, repair options and return policy before paying.

Start with what you need the computer to do

Write down your essential activities and the specific applications, games, peripherals and services you rely on. Then check those programs’ official system requirements. Everyday browsing and office work generally call for less performance than gaming or creative production, so buying the most powerful processor or a dedicated graphics card without a workload that benefits from it can mean paying for capacity you will not use.

Use Microsoft’s PC and Laptop Buying Guide as workload-oriented guidance, not as a universal parts list. Its recommendations are vendor examples, not independent benchmarks; what you need depends on the software and files you use.

Choose a laptop or desktop

A laptop makes sense when you need to carry your computer or work in different places. A desktop is worth considering if it will stay in one workspace and you prioritize a larger display, performance per dollar or the possibility of upgrading components. Upgrade options vary by model, so confirm what can actually be replaced or expanded before buying. HP’s computer buying guide discusses these form-factor trade-offs.

Set a budget and compare the configuration

Set a spending limit before comparing models. Within it, prioritize the components and features that affect your actual work. Leave room for a modest step above bare minimums if you have a clear reason, such as larger local files or demanding software; do not pay for speculative future capacity without a need.

Component or feature What to check
Processor Confirm that the processor meets the requirements of your essential apps. Compare the complete configuration and workload fit rather than choosing by processor name alone.
Memory (RAM) Match capacity to how many apps and files you use at once, and to any specific software requirements. Microsoft’s guide suggests 8–16 GB for multitasking; for photo or video editing it says closer to 16 GB may be appropriate. Its gaming guidance is 16–64 GB. These are Microsoft recommendations, not universal minimums.
Storage Check capacity and whether you plan to keep files and games locally or rely on cloud storage. Microsoft gives multitaskers a range of 128 GB to 1 TB depending on local versus cloud use, and suggests 512 GB to 2 TB or more for gamers keeping large game files locally. Treat these as workload examples, not guarantees of sufficiency.
Graphics Check your applications’ and games’ requirements. A dedicated graphics card may be needed for demanding games or some creative applications; ordinary browsing and office work may not justify the added cost.
Display and input Assess screen size, resolution and touch needs, plus keyboard and pointing-device comfort. If accessibility features matter to you, verify them on the exact model.
Ports and connectivity Make sure the computer supports the monitors, storage, accessories and wireless connections you expect to use. Check the exact model’s specifications rather than assuming every configuration has the same ports or features.

Microsoft’s common PC and device terms page explains component terminology if a specification sheet is unfamiliar.

Check operating-system compatibility separately from performance

If you plan to use Windows 11, confirm that the exact computer meets Microsoft’s compatibility requirements. Microsoft lists minimums including a compatible 1 GHz or faster processor with at least two cores, 4 GB RAM, 64 GB storage, UEFI and Secure Boot capability, TPM 2.0, DirectX 12-compatible graphics with a WDDM 2.0 driver, and a qualifying display. Microsoft also notes that some features, apps and hardware require more. These are operating-system minimums, not a comfort target for choosing a computer; select capacity for your own apps and workload. See Windows 11 system requirements.

For Windows, macOS or Linux, check that the applications, services, files and accessories you depend on work with the platform and the specific computer. There is no universal platform winner independent of those requirements.

Inspect ownership terms before you pay

  • Warranty: Read the written warranty, including coverage, exclusions, claim handling, and any repair or shipping costs. Compare a separately sold service contract with coverage already included, and keep the receipt and warranty documents. The FTC’s warranty guidance is for U.S. consumers; rights and terms vary by location.
  • Seller and total cost: For online purchases, verify who is selling the computer and check the full price, including shipping and fees. Review the return policy and any marketplace protections before checkout. See the FTC’s online shopping guidance.
  • Repair options: Look into likely failures, expected lifespan and repair difficulty for the exact product. The FTC discusses these considerations in its repair restrictions guidance.
  • Accessibility: If accessibility is a requirement, verify the features you need on the device or compare available Accessibility Conformance Reports. The U.S. Access Board’s computer accessibility guidance focuses on applicable Section 508 standards and is especially relevant to U.S. federal procurement.
