You can buy a guitar online with less guesswork by choosing for your playing needs, comparing feel-related specifications, and checking details about the exact instrument—not just its model. Before ordering, confirm what the seller inspects or sets up and read the return terms for that specific item. A return policy is your fallback, not a substitute for knowing what you want.
1. Choose a guitar for the music you want to play
Start with how you plan to use the instrument. An acoustic guitar is self-contained for unplugged playing; an electric guitar requires amplification but often has lighter strings and a slimmer neck. Neither is universally better. The right choice is the one that makes you want to practice the music you care about.
If you are considering an electric, think about the sounds you want and how much variety you need. Pickup layout affects the available tonal options. A hybrid HSS or HSH configuration may offer a broader range if your tastes are still developing. Sweetwater’s Electric Guitar Buying Guide describes common considerations, including pickup configurations and scale length.

2. Use a guitar you already like as a reference
If you have played a guitar that felt comfortable, note its type, scale length, neck profile, body size, approximate weight, and configuration. These details can help narrow a shortlist, but they cannot guarantee that another guitar will feel the same. Scale length and neck shape influence how a guitar feels in your hands; personal comfort still requires a degree of judgment that specifications or a video cannot settle.

Sweetwater gives 24.75 to 25.5 inches as a general scale-length range for electric guitars, not a rule that covers every instrument. Treat scale length as one comparison point, not a quality ranking or a promise of fit.
3. Compare the actual instrument, not just the model name
When a listing describes a particular guitar, check whether its photos show that exact instrument, whether an individual weight is provided, and whether the seller describes its condition or modifications. Ask for additional photos or a brief demonstration if an important detail is missing. Useful questions include:

- What is its weight, and are there any repairs, modifications, or damage not shown?
- Have the electronics and controls been tested, if it is an electric guitar?
- What is included in the sale, such as a case, gig bag, or accessories?
These details are not standard across all retailers. Sweetwater says its Guitar Gallery listings use serial-number-specific instruments, high-resolution photos, and recorded individual weights. Its online guitar-buying guide also discusses case fit; confirm that a case or gig bag fits the guitar’s exact body shape instead of relying only on a generic label.

An inspection and a player-specific setup are different things. Sweetwater describes a 55-point inspection for instruments valued at $399 and above. The retailer says the inspection checks factory tolerances; that does not necessarily mean the action, strings, or other playability details have been adjusted to suit your preferences. These are Sweetwater’s stated service terms, not an industry-wide standard.

Before ordering, ask the seller what its inspection covers, whether it checks playability and electronics, and whether a custom setup is included or available. A setup can adjust certain playability factors, but it cannot change a guitar’s basic body shape or neck geometry. See Sweetwater’s 55 Point Inspection page for its description of that retailer’s process.

Check the policy before checkout, then confirm it applies to the particular guitar and seller. Look for the return deadline, condition requirements, exclusions, shipping charges, and any fees. Pay particular attention if the instrument is vintage, clearance, or special order; exceptions can make a general satisfaction guarantee inapplicable.

For one retailer-specific example, Guitar Center’s policy page, last revised February 11, 2026, states a 45-day satisfaction guarantee with limitations and exceptions, and a three-day return period for vintage instruments. Those terms are not a general promise from other sellers. Read Guitar Center’s current return policy and verify the terms shown for your own purchase.
6. Inspect the delivery and decide within the policy window
- Keep the packaging. Retain the box and protective materials while you evaluate the guitar; they may be needed if you return it.
- Check the instrument promptly. Compare its condition and included items with the listing, and test basic playability and electronics where applicable.
- Decide whether the issue is adjustable or fundamental. If the guitar is sound but needs a different feel, ask a qualified technician whether a setup can address it. If the body shape or neck geometry feels wrong, a setup will not transform those features.
- Act before the deadline. If the instrument is a poor match, follow the seller’s return instructions while the item remains eligible under its policy.
Buying remotely cannot establish with certainty that a guitar will feel right in your hands. A familiar reference, detailed questions, and a clear return route reduce the risk without removing that uncertainty.
