To make a Blu-ray disc that plays like a movie in a standalone player, use video Blu-ray authoring software and a Blu-ray writer. Copying an MP4 onto a disc as a data file stores the video but does not, by itself, create an authored Blu-ray movie. Windows Media Player documents burning audio CDs and data CDs or DVDs—not authoring video Blu-ray discs.
Choose between a playable movie disc and file storage
First decide how you want to use the disc:
- Standalone Blu-ray player: Create a video Blu-ray project in software that explicitly supports Blu-ray video authoring. The software prepares the disc structure that the player expects.
- Store a video file: Write the movie file, such as an MP4, to a disc as data. Playback then depends on whether the computer or player supports that file type; this is not the same as authoring a standard Blu-ray movie. Microsoft describes data-disc playback in those terms: Windows Media Player burning and playback guidance.
Windows Media Player’s documented burning options cover audio CDs and data CDs or DVDs. They do not provide a video Blu-ray authoring workflow.
Check the equipment and blank disc
Use a Blu-ray writer
Your computer needs a drive specified to write Blu-ray media; a CD/DVD recorder alone is not enough. Before buying or using a disc, check the writer’s specifications for the particular format and capacity you plan to burn. Choose BD-R or BD-RE
- BD-R: A write-once disc, suited to a finished recording you do not expect to erase and reuse.
- BD-RE: Rewritable media, if the writer and authoring software support it.
Compatibility depends on the exact drive, software, disc type, capacity, and target player. Sony specifies blank BD-R for BDMV creation in its own Click to Disc Editor process; that is not a universal requirement for every authoring program. The Blu-ray Disc License Office identifies BD-R, BD-RE, and BDXL as distinct format categories: Blu-ray Disc License Office.

Author the movie and burn it
- Install video Blu-ray authoring software. Confirm that its current documentation explicitly supports video Blu-ray creation. A utility that only writes files or an already-made ISO is not necessarily an authoring tool.
- Start a video Blu-ray project. Import your original movie files and select the Blu-ray video workflow, not a data-disc project. For example, Wondershare says its DVD Creator Windows version can burn video to Blu-ray disc, Blu-ray folder, or ISO and lists MP4, MKV, and AVI among supported formats. It lists BD-R, BD-RE, BD-25, BD-50, and BD-100, but those are vendor-stated capabilities and do not guarantee support by every drive or player. See Wondershare’s Blu-ray creation page.
- Review the project. Preview the video and check that the planned output fits the selected disc. Menus, chapters, subtitles, and editing are optional features where a program offers them; they are not requirements for every simple project.
- Choose the output. Burn directly from the authoring application if it supports that option, or create an authored Blu-ray folder or ISO for writing later. Folder and ISO output can also preserve a build copy. Available choices and button names vary by program and version.
- Write to the blank disc. Select a supported disc and writer, then follow the authoring program’s burn workflow. Do not assume that writing a movie file or a generic data folder produces a Blu-ray video disc.
- Test in the intended player. Eject the disc and try it in the standalone player you plan to use. Confirm the player’s support for the recordable disc format and capacity; playback cannot be guaranteed across all Blu-ray players.

Keep the project to movies you have rights to use
This workflow is for authoring your own footage. Do not treat it as guidance for copying protected commercial Blu-ray discs. Microsoft notes that unauthorized use or duplication of copyrighted material may violate copyright laws in its media-burning guidance.
