In Halls of Torment, critical chance is not necessarily capped at 100%: Chasing Carrots said in a May 16, 2023 developer announcement that critical hits and other chances can exceed 100% and apply multiple times. That makes crit chance a way to gain additional crit stacks, not simply a percentage that stops mattering at 100%. But more chance is not automatically the best upgrade: the value depends on the attack’s crit behavior, its crit bonus, and whether extra stacks trigger the effects your build relies on.

What does critical chance above 100% do?

The developer’s May 16, 2023 announcement says, “Critical Hits and other chances can now exceed 100% and be applied several times at once.” In other words, excess chance can contribute to multiple critical stacks rather than being discarded at a 100% ceiling. The announcement establishes that design principle, but it does not establish that every present-day weapon, ability, or on-critical effect handles extra stacks identically. A community-maintained mechanics reference illustrates the stack model with a 310% critical chance: it describes a 90% chance of three stacks and a 10% chance of four. Treat that as an example of how excess chance can translate into stack odds, not a universal breakpoint or a recommended target. Halls of Torment Wiki: Game Mechanics

How do critical chance and critical bonus work together?

Critical chance and critical bonus are separate levers. The Stats reference distinguishes base critical chance from its multiplier, and base critical bonus from its multiplier. A displayed chance figure alone therefore cannot tell you the damage contribution: you also need the attack’s normal damage, its critical bonus, and how many stacks can apply. Halls of Torment Wiki: Stats

The mechanics reference gives a simplified calculation: final critical damage equals normal damage multiplied by one plus the critical bonus times the number of critical stacks. Its illustrative example starts with 50 normal damage and a 220% critical bonus. At 310% chance, it gives 90% odds of 380 damage (50 + 330) and 10% odds of 490 damage (50 + 440). These are wiki example values, not results from a controlled gameplay test or a promise about every attack. Halls of Torment Wiki: Game Mechanics

How should you choose between more crit chance, bonus, or damage?

There is no source-backed universal breakpoint at which critical chance beats critical bonus or ordinary damage. Compare the marginal contribution of each available upgrade for the specific attack you are building around rather than pursuing a round number.

  1. Check the attack. Identify whether the weapon or ability can critically hit and how its critical chance is calculated. The Stats reference notes that critical hits depend on the weapon or ability.
  2. Account for its damage and frequency. Consider normal damage and how often the attack hits alongside its chance and bonus. A chance increase has limited value if the attack does not crit, while frequent hits can make a per-hit improvement matter differently than a rare hit.
  3. Compare the actual upgrade choices. Weigh more chance against more critical bonus, base damage, attack frequency, or the ability’s own effects. The available references do not quantify these tradeoffs across characters, trait pools, stages, or current patch balance.
  4. Check the game version. The cited official statement is from 2023, and the community references are not independently validated as current-patch rankings. Avoid treating any one number as an ideal target for every run.

Do extra critical stacks trigger more on-critical effects?

Do not assume that additional critical stacks create additional proc checks for every trait or ability. A Steam Community guide discussion cautions that some effects—citing Sorceress and Transfixion as an example—may not apply additional effects with extra critical chance; it describes 200% chance as potentially being treated as one hit with increased damage. This is secondary community evidence, not an official global rule, so verify the exact current tooltip or test the specific interaction in-game before building around repeated procs. What should a crit-focused build check?

Evaluate crit as a synergy question: the attack must be able to crit, the chance and bonus should support its damage, and any desired on-critical effect must respond as expected. Chasing Carrots’ 2023 announcement described Sorceress as lightning-focused, introduced Lightning damage that can cause Electrify, and said effects may stack. That makes lightning and effect interactions a reasonable combination to investigate, but the announcement does not establish Sorceress as the strongest current critical-hit build or prove that extra crit stacks trigger extra Electrify effects. • Damage: Compare normal damage, critical chance, critical bonus, and possible stack counts.
  • Attack behavior: Confirm the particular weapon or ability can crit and consider how often it hits.
  • Effect behavior: Verify whether extra stacks add damage only or also produce extra checks for the exact on-critical effect.
  • Opportunity cost: Consider which other damage upgrades you give up; the cited sources do not quantify current-patch tradeoffs.
