Building an Android QR scanner and QR code generator involves two separate jobs: reading codes through a scanner flow and encoding content into a QR image. The right scanning approach depends mainly on whether you need a custom camera interface. Google Code Scanner handles scanning through Google Play services; ML Kit Barcode Scanning suits apps that need more control over the camera experience. For generation, ZXing’s QRCodeWriter is one documented Java option.

The title suggests a personal build retrospective, but no verifiable details establish which tools or design choices a particular app used. The technical guidance below distinguishes documented Android options from any claim about that app’s implementation.

Choose a scanning approach before designing the app

Android offers two distinct paths for scanning. A delegated scanner is simpler when the app only needs a scan result. An app-owned camera flow makes sense when scanning must be integrated into a custom screen or workflow, but it brings camera and frame-processing responsibilities into the app.

Decision point Google Code Scanner ML Kit Barcode Scanning with a custom camera flow
Custom UI and camera control Google Play services handles the scanner experience; the app receives the result. Designed for use cases needing a custom UI and greater control.
Camera permission The app can scan without declaring camera permission because scanning is delegated to Google Play services. The app directly uses the camera and must handle its camera access and permission responsibilities.
Google Play services Required for the delegated scanner. The unbundled model uses Google Play services; the bundled model is included with the app.
Model delivery and app-size impact The scanner module can download on first use unless configured for install-time delivery or explicitly requested. Google’s Android guide describes an unbundled model that adds about 200 KB to app size and may need a download before first use, versus a bundled model that adds about 2.4 MB and is immediately available. These figures describe the model options, not total app size.
Formats and zoom Use the delegated scanner’s documented scanner configuration; auto-zoom is available starting with version 16.1.0. Supports barcode-format configuration, allowing detection to be limited to expected formats.
Camera frames and performance Camera-frame processing is delegated. The app owns camera-frame handling and should avoid excessive image sizes and stale frames.

When Google Code Scanner fits

Choose Google Code Scanner if the app can accept a delegated scanning interface and needs to receive a decoded result without building its own camera pipeline. Google documents a minimum Android API level of 23 and the dependency com.google.android.gms:play-services-code-scanner:16.1.0. The module may be downloaded the first time it is needed unless delivery is arranged earlier. See Google Code Scanner documentation.

Google states that “All image processing occurs on the device and Google doesn’t store the results or image data.” This describes Google’s Code Scanner service; it does not establish how an app that receives a result subsequently stores or handles it.

When ML Kit with a custom camera fits

Use ML Kit Barcode Scanning when the scanning view needs to match the app’s own interface or workflow. Google’s Android guide documents bundled and unbundled model options: bundling makes the model available immediately while increasing app size by about 2.4 MB; the unbundled model adds about 200 KB but may require a download before the first scan. The estimates are from Google’s guide and concern the model distribution choice, not the total application size. See Google’s ML Kit Android guide.

Plan permissions and user expectations

A delegated Code Scanner can decode barcodes without the app declaring camera permission, as Android’s permission guidance explains. That is a specific advantage of delegation, not a general property of QR scanning. An app that opens and operates its own camera must take responsibility for camera access and permission handling. See Android’s guidance on minimizing permission requests.

Whichever approach is used, be clear about what happens after a scan. A decoded value might be displayed, acted on, or saved, but the technical documentation for these APIs does not establish that any particular app supports history, saved codes, or specific QR payload types.

Improve scan reliability with image and frame choices

Detection depends on the image reaching the scanner, not just the library chosen. Google’s ML Kit guide says the smallest meaningful unit in a barcode should generally be at least two pixels wide and, for a two-dimensional code, two pixels tall. A code that occupies too few pixels can be difficult to detect even in a high-resolution camera image.

  • Choose resolution for the situation. Google gives 1280×720 or 1920×1080 as typical input resolutions for scanning codes farther away. If the code fills most of the image, a lower resolution may reduce latency.
  • Limit formats. Configure detection for formats the app expects rather than asking the scanner to search for unnecessary barcode types; Google says this can improve detection speed.
  • Keep the code in focus and large enough. Distance, focus, movement, and the code’s pixel dimensions all affect whether the input image contains enough detail. Do not treat a chosen resolution as a guarantee of successful scanning.
  • Prevent a real-time backlog. For CameraX analysis, Google advises using STRATEGY_KEEP_ONLY_LATEST so the analyzer receives the newest frame rather than accumulating stale ones. Close each processed ImageProxy when analysis is done.
  • Avoid unnecessary full-resolution processing. Google advises against processing unnecessarily large native-resolution images. With Camera or camera2, throttle analysis work as needed to avoid doing more frame processing than the app can handle.

These are implementation recommendations in Google’s guide, not measured performance results for a specific app or device.

Generate QR codes as a separate feature

Scanning decodes an image; generation encodes content into one. Adding a scanner does not by itself create a QR image, so treat code creation as a separate function with its own input, output, and error handling.

ZXing’s QRCodeWriter is one documented Java option. In its version 3.5.4 API, it accepts the content, a barcode format, and preferred width and height, then returns a BitMatrix representing the encoded image. The project README describes ZXing as being in maintenance mode, with bug fixes and minor enhancements expected. That status applies to the library project; it should not be confused with the separate legacy Barcode Scanner Android app, which the README says is unavailable for publication and does not work with Android 14.

What can—and cannot—be concluded about this app

Public documentation for Android scanning and QR generation explains available implementation choices, but it does not identify the stack or experience behind this particular app. No established source repository, product listing, release status, test coverage, device matrix, scan success rate, runtime performance, or user response supports a first-person build story here.

To make the retrospective genuinely personal, its author would need to supply which libraries and versions were used; whether scanning was delegated or camera-based; how QR generation worked; supported formats and payloads; permission behavior; any history or saving features; the devices and conditions tested; specific bugs and fixes; and whether the app was released. Without those details, attributing a library, problem, test, or lesson to the app would be speculation.
