A Web3 Zakat calculator needs two separate decisions: which Zakat methodology it implements, and whether its calculation runs in the app or in a smart contract. The title alone does not establish a specific contract, network, ethers.js version, or calculation architecture, so this guide focuses on a transparent implementation pattern rather than claiming details about an undocumented build.

Choose and disclose the Zakat methodology first

A calculator is only as clear as the rules behind its result. Islamic Relief South Africa describes a method that totals gold and silver, cash, savings, investments and shares, money owed to the user, business assets, and stock; deducts short-term liabilities; checks net zakatable wealth against nisab; and applies a 2.5% rate when the threshold is met. That is the approach stated by its calculator, not a universal ruling for every asset or school of jurisprudence. Islamic Relief South Africa’s Zakat calculator states the 2.5% rate; 2026 is the access year, not a page publication date.

Make asset and liability rules visible

List the asset categories the app accepts and the exact liability rule it applies. Islamic Relief South Africa describes deducting debts and obligations due soon, while noting that treatment of long-term mortgage debt can differ among scholars. If your implementation deducts only short-term liabilities, say so in the interface and code documentation. Users with disputed or unusual circumstances should consult a qualified scholar rather than treating the app’s result as a ruling.

Answer “Is zakat on income or savings?” in the interface

Do not turn a broad user question into an unsupported yes-or-no rule. Explain which assets the calculator includes and how it treats any income once held as cash or savings under its selected method. Link the explanation to the methodology source you follow, and have a qualified adviser review the rules before presenting the result as religious guidance.

What is Nisab? Choose gold or silver and keep the choice explicit

Nisab is the minimum wealth threshold used to determine whether Zakat is due under the selected methodology. Islamic Relief Singapore gives measures of 87.48 grams of gold or 612.36 grams of silver and says metal prices fluctuate. Its page frames its guidance according to the Hanafi madhab and attributes preference for the lower silver threshold to most scholars on that page; this does not make silver a universal requirement. Islamic Relief Singapore’s calculator gives the cited gram measures; 2026 is the access year.

Show a gold-or-silver selector, identify the selected basis beside the result, and describe how the app obtains the current metal price. A threshold expressed in currency changes as metal prices move; never present a monetary nisab value as evergreen. Timestamp the price and calculation, identify the currency and price source, and make clear whether the threshold is calculated from a live quote or a value entered by the user.

For “How to calculate Zakat?”, the sequence should be inspectable: total the included assets, deduct the liabilities allowed by the chosen method, compare net wealth with the selected nisab, and apply the stated rate only if the threshold is met. Publish these assumptions next to the result rather than hiding them in a contract or code repository.

Decide whether the calculation belongs on-chain

“On-chain” can mean that a smart contract performs the arithmetic, or simply that an app uses blockchain data or a wallet while calculating off-chain. Those are different architectures. The project-specific contract code is not established here, so do not claim the calculation itself happens on-chain unless the deployed contract actually receives the inputs and returns or records the calculation.

Application-side calculation

The application can collect inputs, retrieve a metal price, calculate totals and threshold status, then display a result without writing to a contract. This is typically the simplest design when the calculation is private and does not need to be recorded. State clearly that the result is computed by the app and is not an on-chain record.

Contract-side calculation

A contract can accept or read the needed inputs and perform deterministic arithmetic on-chain. Specify which data the contract uses, how market-dependent prices reach it, and whether the outcome is stored. A contract cannot make a changing market price evergreen; any price input still needs a source and timestamp, and the app should expose those details. Do not imply that user-entered holdings are private if they are sent in a public transaction.

Use ethers.js with an explicit version and network

Ethereum.org describes ethers.js as a JavaScript/TypeScript library for interacting with Ethereum and explains that libraries connect through data providers. Its documentation also describes contract interaction through an ABI, which defines exposed functions, their inputs and outputs, and events. Ethereum.org’s smart-contract interaction guide covers these concepts and distinguishes reading from writing.

Name the actual ethers.js version in the project instructions and lockfile, and name the network where the contract is deployed. The available ethers.js documentation cited here is explicitly for v5 and points readers to separate v6 documentation; v5 examples should not be copied into a v6 project without checking version-specific APIs. The ethers.js v5 documentation is version-scoped.

Likewise, identify the actual RPC provider only if the implementation uses one. Ethereum.org lists provider options, including Infura and Alchemy, but that general documentation does not establish which service a particular project uses.

Separate contract reads from state-changing writes

Ethereum.org states: “Reading is a free operation that does not create a transaction and does not change any state on the blockchain.” A read can retrieve contract state or call a function that does not modify state. A write submits a transaction that can change state and generally requires wallet authorization and payment of network fees. Use the correct interaction for the job: a calculator that only needs to fetch a stored configuration does not need to submit a write just to display it.

In ethers.js, the ABI is the interface the app uses to call contract functions. Include only the relevant deployed contract address and ABI in the app, and ensure they match the named network. The precise code depends on the ethers.js major version and the project’s contract interface; because neither is specified for this project, a code snippet would risk presenting an incompatible API or a fabricated function.

Build checks that protect clarity and trust

  • Methodology: document included asset categories, deductible liabilities, nisab basis, and rate; get the rules reviewed by a qualified scholar.
  • Price inputs: identify the source, currency, and timestamp for any gold or silver price used to calculate a threshold.
  • Calculation location: label whether the app or contract computes the result, and distinguish an on-chain record from an app-only result.
  • Network and library: state the deployed network and exact ethers.js version; use documentation for that version.
  • Transaction behavior: explain when the app performs a read and when it asks the wallet to authorize a state-changing write.
  • Privacy: explain whether holdings are sent to a public blockchain; do not imply that on-chain inputs are confidential.
