Use Python to assemble a two-page, landscape A4 tech-pack PDF from product images and structured data: place a product photo beside a line drawing with numbered callouts on page one, then add a bill of materials, measurement points with tolerances, and revision history on page two. The workflow below is suited to a small team creating a shareable starting document—not a universal or automatically production-ready specification.
What the script creates—and what it does not
The example script described by the DEV Community tutorial uses ReportLab to draw a PDF and Pillow to prepare images. Its inputs are an optional photo.jpg, a lineart.png, and a style.json file containing the product details and tables. The output is a two-page landscape A4 document.
- Page one: product photo, technical line drawing, and numbered callout pins.
- Page two: bill of materials (BOM), points of measure with tolerances, and a revision log.
- Header: fields such as style number, product name, season, revision, date, and page count.
The tutorial reports a 175-line script and a run using Python 3.13.3, ReportLab 4.5.1, Pillow 12.2.0, and PyMuPDF 1.27.2.3. These are the tutorial author’s reported environment details, not a guarantee that those are the latest releases or that the script has been independently tested here. PyMuPDF is used for previewing the generated PDF, not for drawing it.

Set up the files and Python environment
Install the libraries
In a project folder, create and activate a virtual environment if you want to keep these dependencies separate from other Python projects. Then install the packages with the tutorial’s command:

pip install reportlab pillow pymupdfReportLab provides a PDF canvas for drawing text, shapes, and images; Pillow handles image preparation. PyMuPDF is needed only if you follow the tutorial’s PDF preview step. See the ReportLab documentation and its User Guide for the documented drawing methods.
Organize the inputs
Keep the source files together so the script can load them by filename. The tutorial’s example uses:

The JSON file separates content from layout. Put the values your team needs in the header, callouts, BOM, measurement points, and revision history. The exact keys depend on the script you use; the following is a conceptual outline, not a copy-paste schema guaranteed to work with every implementation:

}Replace example labels with the field names expected by your script and the terms used by your manufacturer. The drill used in the tutorial is explicitly hypothetical; its materials and dimensions are placeholders, not validated product specifications. Do not copy them into a real production pack without confirming the actual design and requirements.
Build the two-page layout
Page one: connect the picture to the specification
Draw the header first, then place the product photo and technical flat side by side. Add numbered pins to relevant features in the line drawing and list the corresponding callout descriptions in a readable area. The number on the drawing and the written explanation should be a one-to-one match. Check that labels do not cover important edges or overlap one another when the drawing is scaled to fit the page.

ReportLab’s User Guide identifies drawImage as its preferred method for placing images on a PDF canvas and documents caching behavior when an image is reused. The script can use that method to place the photo and drawing, while text and callout shapes are drawn on the same canvas.
Page two: make materials, measurements, and changes legible
Lay out the BOM with the information needed to identify each material or component. Present each measurement point alongside its target value and tolerance, and identify the unit. Keep the revision log in a table or other compact structure that records what changed and which revision it belongs to. A generated page is only useful if the content remains readable at ordinary viewing and print sizes.

Prepare images before placement
The tutorial’s image-preparation approach crops excess white margins from the line drawing, converts it to a compact 1-bit image, and preserves the product photo as JPEG bytes. This can make assets easier to place and may affect output size, but the reported file-size reduction applies only to that tutorial’s example; it is not a guaranteed reduction for other images or documents. Keep original source artwork so you can revise the pack without losing detail.

This workflow covers a useful subset of common tech-pack information, not every section every product or supplier needs. Techpacker’s guide notes that pack contents depend on the product and design. Its overview includes style information, technical flats, BOM, measurements and grading, construction notes, cost sheet, and revision history. The tutorial’s generated example includes style information, one drawing with callouts, a BOM, measurements for one size with tolerances, and revision history; it does not provide a grading chart or cost sheet.
Other references point to additional possible sections. A fashion tech-pack schema repository describes areas such as colorways, construction, sample stages, care instructions, labeling, and packaging. Shopify’s tech-pack guide also discusses technical drawings, materials, measurements, construction, and revision tracking. Treat these as prompts for adapting the document, not as a single mandatory checklist.

- Ask the manufacturer what file format, views, units, tolerances, and specification fields it expects.
- Add grading information when the product is made in multiple sizes; a one-size measurement table is not a graded specification.
- Include construction, colorway, labeling, care, packaging, costing, or sample-stage details when they are relevant to the product and the recipient’s workflow.
- Confirm that all values, drawing references, and revision entries reflect the actual design before sharing the PDF as a specification.
Preview and validate the generated PDF
Open the output PDF and inspect both pages at full size and at typical screen or print scale. Check that the page orientation and page count are right; images are not clipped or distorted; callout pins and explanations match; table text is readable; measurement units and tolerances are present; and the revision shown in the header agrees with the log. If you use PyMuPDF as in the tutorial, use it to render pages for a quick visual preview, then still inspect the PDF itself.
ReportLab’s official documentation covers image placement and PDF drawing, but the presence of a valid PDF file does not verify the correctness of its specifications. Content accuracy and supplier acceptance depend on the data you provide and the recipient’s requirements.
