Build a strong NIKKE team in this order: make sure its Burst I → Burst II → Burst III chain can complete, check that the units’ cooldowns support a useful repeat cycle, then fill the damage, support, and survival roles your mode requires. There is no single lineup that is best for every account or stage.
1. Start with a complete Burst chain
A squad needs units assigned to Burst I, Burst II, and Burst III. Once the shared Burst gauge is full, the chain proceeds through those stages; completing it activates Full Burst. The Nikke.gg Team Building Guide says Full Burst lasts 10 seconds, during which team damage and aim behavior change. The gauge resets when Full Burst ends.
Before weighing individual character strength, confirm that your five-unit squad can complete the chain. A roster with powerful damage dealers still needs access to each Burst stage to activate Full Burst.

2. Check cooldowns before choosing a formation
A complete chain is not enough if cooldowns leave the team waiting too long to use it again. Nikke.gg notes that some Burst I and Burst II skills have 20-second cooldowns, while Burst III skills may have 40-second cooldowns. Google Play’s beginner team-building tips likewise recommend 20-second Burst I and Burst II units and another unit of a stage when relying on a 40-second cooldown.

These are composition goals, not a guarantee of a fixed rotation: the actual skills in your roster determine whether the timing works. A second Burst III is often used to help maintain frequent Full Burst cycles when one Burst III has a 40-second cooldown. Check the skills and cooldowns of the specific units you plan to field.
Two useful starting formations
| Formation | Structure | Why consider it |
|---|---|---|
| 1-1-3 | One Burst I, one Burst II, three Burst III | Google Play presents this as a reliable beginner starting point, with adjustments needed for cooldowns and available units. |
| 1-1-2 plus flex | One Burst I, one Burst II, two Burst III, and a utility or off-burst slot | Nikke.gg commonly uses this structure, leaving a dedicated place for another useful function. |
Neither formation is automatically better. Choose based on whether your units can complete a practical Burst cycle and whether the fifth slot’s damage or utility better serves the stage.

3. Fill the jobs your squad is missing
Think of roles as functions to cover, not labels that dictate where every character belongs. Nikke.gg groups team functions into damage dealers, offensive support, defensive support, energy support, healers, and shielders. One unit can cover more than one job, and Burst stage does not define an exclusive role.

- Offensive support: Look for attack or damage buffs and enemy debuffs that strengthen the team’s damage.
- Cycle support: Consider cooldown reduction or Burst generation if the chain is difficult to sustain.
- Survivability: Add healing, shielding, or damage reduction when the encounter calls for it.
Google Play describes Burst I units as commonly supportive, Burst II as often defensive or buff-oriented, and Burst III as often damage-oriented. Treat that as a general tendency, not a rule: individual skills can serve multiple purposes.

4. Account for weapons and Burst gauge generation
Attacks help build the Burst gauge, and weapon behavior affects how a unit performs. Nikke.gg notes that hits generate gauge and that area-of-effect hits can yield more gauge per round. Weapon type also affects range, area damage, single-target damage, gauge generation, and rate of fire.
That makes weapon fit part of team synergy, but not a shortcut to a universal ranking. The right choice depends on your roster and mode, including whether you need to clear groups or focus a boss.

5. Adapt the squad to the mode
Campaign stages generally call for a balanced team, while some bosses reward a more specialized setup that targets their weaknesses, according to Google Play’s beginner guidance. Nikke.gg separates its recommendations for Campaign, Tribe Tower, Arena, and Interception rather than treating one team as suitable for all of them.

6. Use example teams as starting points, not prescriptions
Nikke.gg’s Team Compositions page gives this general Campaign example: Liter (Burst I), Crown (Burst II), Red Hood and Modernia (Burst III), with Naga in the flex slot. The guide’s rationale includes cooldown reduction, wave clear, Burst generation, and offensive synergy. It also lists substitutions, noting that some alternatives need more investment or manual play.
This is one guide’s example, not a lineup guaranteed to work for every account. Character availability, investment, skill choices, and the current game meta all affect what is practical. Use the example to see how roles can fit together, then evaluate the units you actually own.
Quick Recap
7. Compare candidate squads with five checks
- Burst chain and cadence: Can the team complete I → II → III, and do its cooldowns support the rotation you want?
- Damage profile: Does the stage need wave clear, single-target damage, or both?
- Support: Are buffs, debuffs, cooldown reduction, or Burst generation missing?
- Survival: Will the squad need healing, shielding, or damage reduction to handle the encounter?
- Mode and roster fit: Does the composition suit the enemy and activity, and can your available units perform their intended roles?
