To build a stock watchlist, create a list in a brokerage or market-tracking app, search for each company or ticker, confirm the exact security, and add it. To set a price alert, choose a condition—such as crossing above or below a price—enter the threshold, save it, then check that the alert is active and its notification method is configured. The exact menus and features depend on the service.
1. Decide what your watchlist is for
Give the list a name that helps you remember why the securities are there, such as “Research next” or “Near my review price.” If the app supports notes, record the reason you are following each stock. This keeps a watchlist useful as a tracking tool rather than an unexplained collection of symbols; it does not make the list a recommended portfolio.
Some services let you create multiple lists. Apple Stocks, for example, supports named lists and lets you sort or manually reorder their contents. Fidelity documents up to 15 watchlists, with up to 50 securities in each; those are Fidelity-specific limits, not a general limit for stock apps.

- Open the app’s watchlist or lists area and create a list if needed.
- Use search to look up a company name or ticker symbol.
- Check the result’s displayed company and security details before adding it. A ticker alone may not identify the intended listing or share class unambiguously.
- Add the confirmed result to the watchlist. Depending on the service, you may be able to add it from search results, a quote page, or a recently viewed list.
Apple Stocks’ iPhone guide says search can find ticker symbols, companies, funds, and indexes. Fidelity describes adding securities from quotes, search results, and recently viewed stocks. Apple Stocks also lets you choose whether a list displays price change, percentage change, or market capitalization.

3. Choose an alert condition that matches what you want to monitor
For a simple price notification, choose a direction and a threshold: for example, “rises above” a value or “falls below” a value. The threshold is a monitoring choice, not a buy or sell recommendation. Select a price that would prompt you to review the stock, rather than treating the notification itself as a reason to trade.
Some services offer other trigger types. Fidelity documents price tripwires, percentage changes, and moving averages, and says users can set up to nine price triggers on a security. Schwab Mobile’s documented flow asks users to choose a target-price type and direction before entering the target. These options and limits are provider-specific.

4. Save the alert and verify it is active
- Open the stock’s quote or alert controls, or select the stock from your watchlist.
- Choose the alert option and select the condition and direction you want.
- Enter the threshold or other required value, then save.
- Return to the app’s alert-management area. Check that the correct security, condition, value, and enabled status appear.
- Review available delivery settings, such as push notifications or email, and make sure the delivery route you want is configured.
Alert setup and delivery can have separate prerequisites. Fidelity says an alert delivery device must be defined before using its described watchlist triggers. Schwab Mobile provides a Stock Alerts area for reviewing and editing open alerts. FYERS says its Alerts area lets users view, edit, enable or disable, and delete alerts. None of these examples establishes a universal delivery-time guarantee, so do not assume a notification will arrive instantly.

5. Keep the list and alerts current
When your reason for tracking a security changes, update its note, remove it from the list, or revise its threshold. Check how your particular service handles list changes: TradingView says its existing watchlist alert updates when symbols are added or removed, but that behavior should not be assumed on other platforms.
Also treat watchlists, alerts, and synchronization as separate features. Schwab Mobile alerts do not sync with thinkorswim or Schwab.com, while Apple says Stocks lists can be viewed across Apple devices signed in to the same Apple Account if Stocks is enabled in iCloud. Before relying on an alert on another device or platform, check that service’s own settings and documentation.
