Build your Steam store page in Steamworks, make the game’s actual play experience clear in its description and media, choose accurate tags, follow capsule rules, then use Steam’s traffic reports to see where players encounter and click through to the page. These steps improve the page’s clarity and discovery coverage; no single field, wishlist total, or traffic spike guarantees a recommendation. Steam describes discovery as personalized and spread across multiple routes.

1. Set up the page in Steamworks

Open your app’s Steamworks landing page and choose Edit Store Page to work on its description, trailer, screenshots, and other store-presence fields. Use the page checklist to identify required items; the required checklist must be complete before you submit the page.

You can save changes without publishing them. Publishing makes the page data and assets available on Steam’s public servers, even if the app itself is unreleased or hidden. Keep that distinction in mind when sharing a draft internally: use the save-and-preview workflow for private review, and publish only when the materials are ready to be public. See Steamworks’ Store Page Setup.

2. Explain what players will actually do

Write for someone deciding in a few seconds whether the game is for them. State the genre and core activity, then make its distinctive mechanics, setting, tone, and intended audience easy to recognize. Prefer concrete descriptions of play over broad claims such as “an unforgettable adventure.” Steam provides fields for the page but does not prescribe a universal copy formula; the goal is accurate, quickly understood expectations.

Make the description, screenshots, and trailer support the same picture of the game. If the copy says players build and defend a settlement, show that activity rather than only atmospheric scenery. If a mechanic or mode is central to the experience, make it visible in the media or explain why footage does not represent it. Consistency helps visitors understand the product before they decide whether to wishlist or buy.

3. Choose and order tags for accurate discovery

Steam requires at least five tags before launch and recommends using up to twenty. Start with the five that best summarize the game: Steam says those tags also help describe the game to customers. Then add further tags only where they genuinely fit, ordering all tags by relevance. Steam’s guidance is available in Steam Tags.

  • Lead with the defining experience. Choose tags that tell a player what kind of game this is, not merely terms that are popular.
  • Represent real mechanics and themes. Specific tags can help describe similarity and reach relevant browsing contexts, but a misleading tag risks attracting the wrong audience.
  • Check the full set. Steam says the top twenty tags influence tag-page visibility, search and browse, and similar-game recommendations. Supported languages also matter to player matching, so represent language support accurately.

Think of tags as structured metadata rather than a shortcut to visibility. A tag is useful when it accurately connects the game with players who are interested in that genre, theme, or mechanic.

4. Make capsules and trailers clear and compliant

Capsules are the artwork tiles Steam uses to represent a game in store placements. Base capsules are restricted to the game artwork, title, and official subtitle, with limited text allowed for current major updates or available content. Do not add generic calls to action such as “Wishlist now!” or unsupported claims such as review scores or release dates to a base capsule. Check Steam’s current Graphical Assets requirements before preparing or revising artwork.

Trailers appear prominently at the top of product pages. Use footage that quickly communicates the real game: show representative play early, make important actions legible, and avoid implying features or visual quality the released product will not deliver. A trailer can create a strong first impression, but it should not promise a different experience from the one described in the text and shown in screenshots. Steam’s Store Presence documentation covers trailer placement.

5. Understand what Steam discovery can—and cannot—promise

Steam lists multiple discovery routes, including launch queues, recommendations, genre and tag pages, New and Trending, Top Sellers, discounts, friends’ activity, Curators, and the Discovery Queue. These routes are personalized; what appears to one player may not appear to another. Steam identifies purchases and play as strong interest signals, and says tags and language support affect matching.

A new release can receive baseline New Release visibility, but further placement depends on user context and performance. Steam’s visibility guidance says store traffic landing on a page and conversion rate are not direct visibility factors. Wishlists are useful because wishlisters may receive launch and discount notifications, but wishlist totals are not a sales formula or a general algorithmic visibility lever. Steam says there is no minimum wishlist count before it starts showing a game; it describes exceptions such as Popular Upcoming. Review score guidance is also qualified: Steam says review score is generally not a visibility factor while the score is Mixed or above, and that falling below 40% into Mostly Negative reduces the likelihood of featuring. Treat that as Steam’s published guidance, not a universal ranking formula. Read Visibility on Steam and Wishlists for the platform’s explanations.

6. Measure impressions, visits, and clicks

After publishing, open the app’s Marketing & Visibility area in Steamworks and select Store & Steam Platform Traffic Breakdown. Compare a defined time period and inspect results by placement or channel. Steam’s reporting separates three useful measures:

  • Impressions: the game’s brand appeared on screen. An impression does not prove the person noticed it.
  • Visits: people reached the store page.
  • Click-through rate: the share of impressions that led to a visit, useful for comparing how effectively a placement draws attention.

Use the report diagnostically. If a placement creates impressions but few visits, review whether the game’s capsule and visible positioning communicate its appeal. If visits come from a different channel than expected, adjust campaign targeting or messaging. Changes in these measures do not prove Steam will expand the game’s visibility: the reports show where exposure and visits came from, not a ranking guarantee. Steam explains the report in Store and Platform Traffic Reporting.

For off-Steam campaigns, use UTM links where appropriate to track whether external sources lead to wishlists, purchases, or activations. This helps distinguish external campaign results from Steam placements.

7. Compare page revisions without confusing correlation for cause

When evaluating a page revision, compare equivalent periods and sources where possible. A launch, discount, or external campaign can change traffic at the same time as a page edit, so a higher visit count alone does not establish that the edit caused more Steam visibility.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many tags should an indie game have on Steam?

Steam requires at least five tags before launch and recommends up to twenty. Put the most representative tags first and include only tags that accurately describe the game.

Do wishlists make Steam recommend my game more?

Steam says wishlists generally are not an algorithmic visibility factor, though it notes exceptions such as Popular Upcoming. Wishlists can help with launch and discount notifications, but they do not guarantee recommendations or sales.

Where can I see where Steam store visits came from?

In Steamworks, open the app’s Marketing & Visibility area and choose Store & Steam Platform Traffic Breakdown. The report breaks out impressions, visits, and click-through by placement and channel.
