You can build a small F-14-inspired RC aircraft as either a foam profile plane with a propeller or choose a separate, more involved electric ducted fan (EDF) model. The documented Parkjets MDC plan is the propeller-driven option: it uses a swing-wing profile design, not EDF propulsion. An EDF model such as E-flite’s twin-40 mm F-14 is a different aircraft with its own setup instructions; its specifications are not settings for a scratch-built design.
Choose a profile propeller build or an EDF model
The two routes look related but differ in propulsion, construction, setup, and experience required. The Parkjets plan documents a small profile plane built mainly from foam, with a conventional propeller powertrain and movable wing sweep. The E-flite F-14 is a commercial twin-EDF model with manufacturer-specific assembly, balance, and control instructions.

Build the documented propeller-driven profile F-14
Gather the plan-specific materials and components
The Parkjets MDC plan page describes a swing-wing profile aircraft made primarily from 6 mm Depron. It lists 1/16-inch plywood for the control horns and motor mount, plus 0.035 × 0.236-inch carbon strip spars. The listed power and control components are:

These are the values listed for this plan, not universal recommendations for every small F-14-style aircraft. Check the plan and component compatibility before buying or substituting parts.
Build around the plan, especially the moving wings
Follow the plan’s geometry and reinforcement details rather than treating the F-14 outline as sufficient guidance. The carbon strip spars and center-section stiffener are structural features; the additional servo operates the wing-sweep mechanism. The source page does not provide independent validation of build difficulty. Its designer says he built it in one evening and flew it the next day, but that anecdote is not a reliable schedule or a guarantee of success for another builder.

Balance and verify the completed airframe
The plan identifies the carbon center-section stiffener as its CG reference. Treat that as the plan’s reference point, not as a general CG rule for F-14-shaped aircraft. Confirm the balance of the completed model with its installed equipment and battery, then verify control direction and operation before flight. The cited plan page does not establish universal control throws or validate substitutions.

E-flite’s F-14 Tomcat Twin 40 mm EDF manual covers a separate commercial model. It lists a weight of 500 g without battery and 725 g with the specified 2200 mAh 4S Smart battery, and gives a 3:30 initial flight timer setting. These are manufacturer figures for that aircraft and configuration; they do not predict the weight, flight time, or setup of a scratch build.

The manual’s setup values are equally model-specific. It instructs owners to check CG with the wings fully extended, the battery installed, and the battery disconnected from the ESC. It specifies low-rate aileron and elevator throws of 13 mm and 10 mm, and high-rate throws of 20 mm and 15 mm, measured as directed in the manual. Do not transfer those CG or control values to a new design without design documentation and flight testing.
The manufacturer explicitly says the model is not recommended as a first ducted-fan aircraft. Its manual also warns to keep hands away from the fan intake when the model is armed. Use the manual’s radio range-check procedure and a designated RC field; a compact EDF model can still fly fast and cover ground quickly.

Check control, safety, and local flight requirements
Before flying, check the particular aircraft rather than relying on its F-14 appearance or another model’s settings. Confirm that each control surface moves in the intended direction, the wing-sweep mechanism works as designed, the aircraft balances according to its own documentation, and the radio passes a range check. Follow the relevant aircraft manual for arming and handling, especially around an EDF intake.
Flight-site rules and legal requirements depend on where you fly. In the United States, consult the FAA’s current recreational flyer guidance. Elsewhere, check the requirements of your national aviation authority.
