A short-term Treasury bill ladder can schedule portions of your cash to mature on different dates, but it does not make those funds instantly accessible. Keep an immediately available buffer, match each bill’s actual maturity date to a planned expense, and avoid reinvesting proceeds you expect to spend.

What a Treasury bill ladder does

A bill ladder is a set of separate Treasury bill purchases with different maturity dates. Each bill returns its face value at maturity; the difference between what you paid and that face value is the bill’s interest. Bills do not make periodic interest payments.

The ladder’s purpose is to schedule the return of principal. A bill is not the same as a bank deposit: access depends on its maturity or on arranging a sale, and the value of selling before maturity may differ from the amount you would receive at maturity. Treasury describes the choice this way: “You can hold a bill until it matures or sell it before it matures.” U.S. Treasury: Treasury Bills

Start with your cash needs, not the bill terms

Keep an immediate-access buffer

Write down expected expenses, their dates, and the amounts needed. Set aside money that must remain accessible on demand before deciding how much to ladder. If the timing or amount of a need is uncertain, do not rely on a bill maturing in time or assume you can sell it without friction.

Match each planned use to an actual maturity date

Choose bills that mature before the dates you expect to use the proceeds. Regular Treasury bill terms are 4, 6, 8, 13, 17, 26, and 52 weeks. The 4- through 26-week bills are auctioned weekly, while 52-week bills are auctioned every four weeks. Those are regular patterns, not guaranteed dates: holidays and special circumstances can change the schedule. Check the official auction calendar and offering details before placing an order. Allocate only the amount you can leave invested

Divide the ladder portion among the maturity dates according to the expected spending schedule. Equal-sized rungs are one simple option, not a requirement. A hypothetical example: if some of your laddered cash is intended for use in roughly one, two, and three months, you could assign portions to bills with actual maturity dates near—but before—those needs. Confirm the issue and maturity dates on the calendar; a bill’s nominal term alone does not guarantee a particular calendar date.

Choose where to hold the bills

TreasuryDirect allows individuals to buy bills directly. Its published minimum is $100, and purchases use $100 increments. It also imposes a 45-calendar-day holding period on a newly purchased marketable security before it can be transferred or sold. As a result, a 4-week bill bought in TreasuryDirect cannot be sold early through that route. Treasury says an early sale can instead be arranged through a bank, broker, or dealer. If access before maturity could matter, review the intermediary’s custody, sale process, costs, and settlement arrangements before buying. Those terms vary by provider; Treasury’s general information does not establish any particular bank’s or broker’s fees, minimums, settlement timing, or automatic-reinvestment features.

Set maturity instructions before buying

Decide what should happen to each bill’s proceeds. TreasuryDirect allows maturity proceeds to be deposited to a linked bank account or reinvested in another bill of the same term. Bill reinvestments can be scheduled up to four business days before maturity. Do not schedule a reinvestment for a rung whose proceeds are needed for spending. 1. List spending needs: Record the amount and date for each expected use, then separate out the immediate-access buffer.
  2. Choose maturity dates: Select bill terms and check the current auction calendar so each intended maturity falls before the related spending date.
  3. Assign amounts: Divide only the ladder amount among the selected maturities; keep uncertain or near-term needs out of rungs that may be difficult to access early.
  4. Select a holding route: Compare direct TreasuryDirect purchase with a bank, broker, or dealer based on access needs and the route’s specific rules.
  5. Set proceeds instructions: Arrange for needed funds to go to the linked bank account, and reinvest only proceeds that are not yet needed.
  6. Recheck dates and terms: Review the current auction calendar and offering information before ordering, since the routine schedule can shift.

Understand taxes and changing rates

TreasuryDirect states that bill interest is subject to federal income tax and exempt from state and local income taxes. This is general U.S. tax treatment, not personal tax advice; individual circumstances can affect tax consequences. TreasuryDirect: Treasury Bills

If you hold a bill to maturity, Treasury pays its face value. The yield on a future bill is not fixed by today’s purchase: rates may change before later rungs are bought, affecting the return available on those purchases. A ladder sets a schedule for cash coming due; it does not lock in a single rate for all future bills.
