Calling IBGE’s Aggregate Data API can retrieve observations, but it does not by itself explain what each observation means. A semantic layer must connect the value to its variable, classification, category, geography, period, and unit. The official documentation supports that distinction; it does not establish which datasets or implementation decisions a particular author used. So this article explains the documented path and the modeling work it implies without presenting an unverified build as personal experience.

What the IBGE Aggregate Data API provides

IBGE documents its Aggregate Data API as the API that feeds SIDRA, the IBGE Automatic Recovery System for data from the institute’s surveys and censuses. The documentation is labeled version 3.0.0 and was generated on 26 December 2024. It describes routes for discovering aggregates, retrieving their metadata and periods, and finding variables and localities associated with an aggregate. See the official Aggregate Data API documentation.

This is a structured way to find and retrieve published data, not a guarantee that a returned number is self-explanatory. To interpret an observation, a consumer still needs to know which aggregate and variable it belongs to, what category or classification applies, which locality and period it describes, and what unit is being reported. Those details are part of the meaning of the value.

Why an API response is not yet a semantic model

IBGE’s documentation makes a useful connection to OLAP terminology: “os conceitos de variáveis, classificações e categorias são, respectivamente, idênticos aos de medidas, dimensões e membros.” In English, it equates variables, classifications, and categories with measures, dimensions, and members, respectively. That offers a bridge for designing a semantic model, but it does not mean every dataset shares the same business meaning or can be treated as an interchangeable time series.

A semantic layer should make those distinctions explicit for the people and applications using the data. At minimum, an observation’s context can be represented through:

  • Measure or variable: the quantity being reported.
  • Classification and category: the dimension and selected member that qualify the observation.
  • Geography: the locality and territorial level attached to the value.
  • Period: the reference period, not merely a timestamp at which the data was retrieved.
  • Unit: the scale or unit required to interpret the quantity.
  • Source and provenance: the originating aggregate and metadata needed to trace how the observation was selected.

That is a modeling checklist, not a claim that every IBGE aggregate exposes identical fields or that a particular implementation handles these concepts in a specific way. The dataset’s own metadata must inform the model.

A discovery path from question to observation

The documented API structure suggests a practical workflow for answering a data question. Start by identifying the relevant aggregate, then establish its metadata and available periods before selecting variables, localities, and any applicable classifications. The API documentation includes aggregate discovery, metadata and period routes, variable lookups, and locality-by-aggregate lookup; consult its route details for exact request forms rather than assuming a route or parameter.

  1. Translate the question into a statistical subject. Determine what is being asked and which IBGE survey, census, or other published aggregate could answer it.
  2. Identify the aggregate and inspect its metadata. Confirm the source and the definitions available for that aggregate.
  3. Check its periods and variables. Establish the reference periods and the measure or variable that matches the question.
  4. Resolve classification, category, and locality. Select the applicable dimension members and geographic scope; do not infer them from a value alone.
  5. Record the unit and provenance with the observation. Retain enough context to explain what the returned value represents and where it came from.

The sequence is a reader-facing interpretation workflow based on the documented API concepts, not a report of a particular project’s implementation.

Where statistical metadata fits

IBGE also has a distinct Statistical Metadata API, cataloged as APIMETADADOS. The federal API catalog says it is intended to consult principal metadata classes from IBGE’s Statistical Metadata System, including statistical operations, occurrences of operations, reference documents, and variables. The catalog entry is version 2.0 dated 23 October 2018 and lists the production host apimetadados.ibge.gov.br. Because that catalog record is dated, check the live technical documentation for current endpoint details before relying on them.

The metadata API and Aggregate Data API serve different documented purposes: one is cataloged for statistical metadata, while the other documents aggregate-data discovery and retrieval for SIDRA. Treating metadata discovery as a separate concern helps avoid assuming that fetching a number also supplies every piece of context an application needs.

What can—and cannot—be concluded about the hardest part

The public documentation establishes how IBGE describes its API concepts and access routes. It does not identify which tables a particular author integrated, how that author modeled measures and dimensions, what normalization or revision rules were used, or what obstacle took the most work. Without project-specific evidence, it would be misleading to claim that a particular mismatch, classification change, unit conversion, or API failure was personally encountered.

For a defensible first-person case study, the account would need a traceable example: the user’s question, its source aggregate and variable, the relevant category and locality, the period and unit, and the reason the raw value was insufficient. A concrete implementation story would also need to show the actual modeling decision and the evidence behind the claimed hardest obstacle. The API-versus-meaning distinction is supported by IBGE’s documented structure; a personal account of building around it requires details not established by those documents.
