You can build a review blog around products you already own, seek samples or loans from relevant companies, and earn commissions when readers buy through affiliate links. None of those outcomes is guaranteed: companies may decline requests, affiliate programs set their own eligibility rules, and income depends on factors this guide cannot promise. The durable foundation is useful, original reviews, honest judgment, and clear disclosures.
The legal guidance below is centered on the United States because the cited regulator is the Federal Trade Commission (FTC). Disclosure laws differ by country; check the rules that apply where you and your readers are located.
Choose a focused niche and a reader to help
Start with a category where you can evaluate products thoughtfully and help a specific reader make a decision. “Tech” is broad; a tighter focus might be accessories for remote work, affordable home-networking gear, or tools for a particular kind of creator. These are examples, not prescribed formulas. Choose a scope you can sustain and products your intended readers are likely to compare.
For each review, answer the practical question behind the search: Who is this for? What does it do well? What are its drawbacks? What alternatives or trade-offs matter? A review is useful when it helps someone decide, including when the best advice is not to buy.

Publish original reviews before asking for products
Build a small portfolio from products you own or can borrow with permission. Explain your review method and what you actually evaluated. Separate hands-on testing from research-only coverage, and do not imply you tested something you only read about. Include meaningful disadvantages as well as benefits, and explain how a product performed for the use case you describe.
Amazon Associates expects robust original content that adds value. Its current application guidance gives at least 10 posts as a rule of thumb, not a guaranteed acceptance threshold. The number is Amazon program guidance, not a universal requirement for starting a blog or succeeding as a reviewer. Amazon Associates application review guidance
How can you get products to review?
Start with products you already have access to
Reviewing your own equipment is a practical way to establish your standards without waiting for a company to respond. You can also ask to borrow a product from someone you know, provided you have permission and accurately describe the arrangement when it is relevant to readers.

Pitch manufacturers and publishers directly

Write a concise, specific request to a company whose product genuinely fits your coverage. Introduce your blog and audience, link to relevant published work, say what product you would like to evaluate, and describe the kind of coverage you plan to produce. Ask whether a sample or loan is available and clarify whether it must be returned. A pitch is a request, not a promise of a product, payment, or favorable coverage.
Can a review blog make money?
Potential routes include earning a commission when a reader buys through an affiliate link, receiving a fee for sponsored work, or being supplied a product or loan for coverage. Which options exist depends on your niche, location, and the terms of each company or program. A sample is not cash income, and accepting one does not require a positive review.
For Amazon Associates, current application guidance says Amazon reviews submitted sites after signup and requires at least three qualifying sales within the first 180 days. Personal orders do not qualify. These are program criteria, not an earnings forecast or a general benchmark for other affiliate programs. Amazon Associates application review guidance

Use affiliate links only when they fit the article and help readers. Confirm a program’s current eligibility and terms directly before applying; do not assume that one program’s rules apply to another.

The FTC’s US guidance focuses on whether a company gave you something of value with an expectation that you would promote or discuss its product. It says, “If you receive free products or other perks with the expectation that you’ll promote or discuss the advertiser’s products in your blog, the FTC Act applies to you.” If that connection could affect how readers assess your recommendation, disclose it clearly.
That means answering the common question, “If I get a free product to review, do I need a disclosure no matter how I got it?” The relevant issue is not merely how the product reached you; it is whether there is a material connection readers should know about. Explain the arrangement plainly—for example, “I was given a free [name of product] to review.” If you may earn a commission, the FTC gives this example: “I get commissions for purchases made through links in this post.”
The FTC says there is no prescribed magic wording: “The point is to give readers the essential information in words that are easy to understand.” Avoid vague labels such as “commissionable link” that may not tell readers what the relationship means. FTC Disclosures 101 for Social Media Influencers
Place disclosures where readers will notice them
Put a disclosure near the review or affiliate links it explains, in language readers can readily understand. Do not rely only on a statement at the bottom of a long post or somewhere outside the content: FTC guidance notes that readers may miss disclosures at the page top outside the blog or at the bottom. If you recommend a product in a video or another format, disclose the relationship in that medium as well; for affiliate videos, the FTC says to disclose in the video and in the description near the links. Amazon Associates also requires a legally compliant affiliate disclosure and identification as an Amazon Associate using the language required by its Operating Agreement. How do you protect editorial independence?
Decide what you will say about a product before accepting anything: you will give your honest opinion, describe relevant limitations, and make clear what you did and did not test. A company’s sample or sponsorship does not make a favorable review inevitable. The FTC says endorsements should reflect the endorser’s honest opinion; disclose the connection and preserve your ability to report what you actually think. Keep marketplace customer reviews separate from reviews on your own blog. Amazon lists a promised refund in exchange for a customer review among generally prohibited review practices. A disclosure does not make a prohibited arrangement acceptable. If you post a customer review on a marketplace, check that platform’s current policy before accepting anything connected to it.
