Build the dashboard around operational decisions, not a wall of metric tiles. Decide what “healthy” means for your team, connect service and AI-workload telemetry to that health model, and make every alert point to an owner and a next step. “Real-time” is a freshness target you choose for the work—not a universal refresh interval.

What should the dashboard help your team decide?

Start with the decisions people need to make during a shift, incident, or routine review. A useful operational dashboard answers questions such as:

  • Is work moving through the team’s workflow, or is a backlog building?
  • Which service, workflow, or dependency is becoming unhealthy?
  • Are AI-powered tasks slow, failing, costly, or returning lower-quality results?
  • Who should investigate, and what should they look at next?

Choose a small set of team-level KPIs tied to business or operational objectives, then connect each KPI to service-level signals that explain it. Microsoft’s Azure Well-Architected guidance describes observability as understanding a system’s internal state from the external data it produces, and recommends a health model that can connect workload health to its underlying resources. The dashboard should therefore show a status that can be investigated—not just a collection of values without context.

Separate outcomes from diagnostic signals

A team KPI might describe completed work, backlog, or a service-level objective that matters to your workflow. Under it, show signals such as request volume, error rate, latency, queue depth, or dependency health that help explain a change. The right business measures depend on the team; the cited platform guidance does not prescribe universal team KPIs.

Decide what “real-time” means for each decision

Set a freshness target based on how quickly someone must act. A live incident view may need a different update behavior from a management overview. Microsoft Fabric supports live refresh or configured refresh intervals, and Grafana documents selectable refresh periods; neither establishes one refresh interval that is right for every team. Confirm the chosen platform’s refresh behavior, ingestion delay, and query characteristics against your workload.

How does telemetry get from work to an action?

A real-time dashboard depends on a working telemetry path. A practical design is:

  1. Instrument the work. Emit telemetry from services, queues, workflows, and AI calls. Include useful events such as a task starting, a tool call failing, or a workflow completing.
  2. Collect and route signals. Send telemetry through the collection and routing layer to the destinations that need it. For complex or high-volume workloads, plan for scale, redundancy, and buffering or queueing where appropriate.
  3. Transform and retain data. Apply the processing needed for reliable queries, dashboards, and alert conditions, then store or expose the data through a queryable system.
  4. Visualize health and investigate. Present the operational overview and provide a path to the detailed signals behind an unhealthy state.
  5. Route responses. Send alerts to the responsible team and connect them to runbooks or carefully bounded automated actions.

This is the end-to-end shape described by Microsoft Fabric Real-Time Intelligence, which Microsoft calls “an end-to-end solution for event-driven scenarios, streaming data, and data logs.” The specific services in the path vary by platform; validate the ingestion, processing, query, and action components you actually plan to operate.

How should you instrument and correlate team activity?

Use the four common observability signal types together: metrics show trends and rates, logs record discrete details, traces show work across service boundaries, and events mark meaningful state changes. Metrics can surface a problem; correlated logs and traces help explain where it happened and which work was affected.

Use stable context across boundaries

Define a consistent set of dimensions where they make sense, such as service, environment, team, workflow, model, and agent version. Use correlation IDs so a request can be followed across services and AI calls. Microsoft recommends correlation IDs for end-to-end tracing. Avoid indiscriminately adding sensitive fields or highly variable identifiers as dimensions: govern what is collected and how query cost, access, and retention are managed.

Meet the telemetry prerequisites for AI views

Some platform-specific AI monitoring views depend on conventions and registration, not merely on installing a dashboard. Google Cloud’s AI resource views use trace labels and events following OpenTelemetry GenAI semantic conventions, and require the relevant applications, services, and workloads to be registered in App Hub. Confirm the required APIs, roles, and telemetry are in place before treating those views as an available capability.

What belongs on an AI operations scorecard?

Keep the first view focused on a few measures that help operators detect and diagnose trouble. Add deeper dimensions or detail in drill-down views rather than crowding the overview.

Area Useful measures How to interpret them
Activity Requests, conversations, agent invocations, and active agents Show whether use or workload volume has changed, with suitable comparisons over time.
Performance and reliability Latency distributions, throughput, errors, and time to first token or chunk where available Pair latency and error trends with a service objective or expected operating range.
Cost and consumption Token use by model or provider and estimated cost Label cost as an estimate when it is calculated from implementation data and current price information; verify the inputs and update behavior.
Tool health Tool-call frequency, duration, and failures Break down problem calls by tool or workflow to find the failing dependency.
Quality Evaluation scores and trends, including by agent version Read quality alongside latency and cost so a change in one dimension is not mistaken for an overall improvement.
Team operations Workflow throughput, backlog, or service-level indicators selected for the team Choose measures that reflect the actual work; there is no universal KPI set for every team.

Grafana’s AI monitoring documentation describes dashboard categories spanning activity, performance, cost, tool calls, and quality. Google Cloud documents query and token counts alongside errors and latency in its AI-resource views. Which measures are available depends on instrumentation and platform support; do not present an estimated cost or quality score as a direct observation unless its calculation and provenance are clear.

How should the dashboard support triage?

Give operators a clear overview of health states, then let them move from workload to the affected service, workflow, model, and time range. Microsoft recommends visualizing health states that drill from workload to resources, and setting alerts on state changes. A useful view makes the transition from “something is unhealthy” to “this is the affected work and its relevant telemetry” straightforward.

Design the overview and investigation views

  • Use a small number of health states with definitions the team understands.
  • Show time-series trends for signals where direction and duration matter, rather than relying on a single current value.
  • Provide filters for relevant teams, services, workflows, models, and time ranges.
  • Use drill-through or cross-filtering to preserve context while moving from a summary to detailed telemetry.
  • Use conditional formatting to call attention to meaningful states, not merely to decorate ordinary variation.
  • Keep deeper query exploration in an analyst-oriented view if operators and analysts need different levels of detail.

Microsoft Fabric documents time and custom-dimension slicing, cross-filtering, drill-through, conditional formatting, and optional live refresh. Check how those behaviors work in the selected platform and ensure filters do not hide the scope of an incident.

How do you make alerts actionable?

Alert on a meaningful health-state change or a threshold tied to an objective—not every fluctuation in an individual metric. Microsoft’s guidance emphasizes contextual, actionable alerts, validating thresholds, and reducing noise. Grafana’s AI monitoring examples include error rate, p95 latency against an SLO, daily estimated cost against a budget, and a drop in evaluation score.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Define the response before enabling an alert

  • Condition: State the signal, scope, threshold or state transition, and any required duration or comparison window.
  • Owner: Route it to the team responsible for the affected service or workflow.
  • Context: Include the affected scope, relevant time range, and link or reference to the investigation view or runbook.
  • Next step: Tell the responder what to verify or which runbook to follow.
  • Noise control: Test thresholds against normal behavior, adjust conditions that fire without useful action, and review whether alerts reach the right people.

Automate only within explicit guardrails

Automation can be useful for bounded, reversible responses, but consequential actions need clear limits and human oversight. Define what an automated action may do, when it must stop, and how a person can review or override it. Microsoft’s architecture guidance recommends balancing automation with human oversight and guardrails as responses become more autonomous.

Where can AI assistance help—and where should it not be trusted?

Distinguish the AI workload being monitored from AI features used to create or interpret the dashboard. An agent producing answers is part of the workload: measure its activity, latency, errors, tool use, cost, and quality. An assistant that drafts a query, dashboard, or summary is an aid for the operator, not evidence that the underlying telemetry is correct.

Microsoft documents Copilot-assisted dashboard and query creation. Review generated queries and summaries against raw telemetry, access rules, and team definitions before using them for operational decisions. Treat recommendations as hypotheses to verify, particularly when an action could affect users or production systems.

How should you choose a platform?

Compare options against your existing ecosystem, instrumentation effort, signal coverage, freshness and query behavior, alert routing, access governance, lifecycle and versioning needs, and total operating cost. The capabilities below come from product documentation; they are not an independent benchmark, and actual fit depends on your data, permissions, telemetry volume, geography, and budget.

Option Documented fit Prerequisites and considerations
Microsoft Fabric Real-Time Intelligence Integrated event and streaming path, live dashboards with KQL, Copilot-assisted authoring, alerts and actions, and Git workflow support. Evaluate where data, permissions, and operational workflows already fit the Fabric ecosystem. Validate refresh and query behavior for the target workload.
Grafana Cloud Agent Observability AI agent dashboards, Prometheus and OpenTelemetry metrics, exemplars, and alert rules for error, latency, cost, and quality. Evaluate where observability workflows and metrics are central. Confirm telemetry coverage and how alerting fits existing operations.
Google Cloud Application Monitoring AI resource views derived from OpenTelemetry-convention trace data, with application, service, and workload views. Requires the relevant Google Cloud setup, App Hub registration, APIs, roles, and telemetry conventions. Confirm those prerequisites and access governance.

No single option is established as best for every organization, and the cited documentation does not provide a comparable price or performance test. Validate current feature availability and operating costs for your deployment before committing.

What should you verify before relying on the dashboard?

  • Can an operator identify the relevant health state and follow it to the affected workload or resource?
  • Do metrics, logs, traces, and events carry enough consistent context to investigate across service boundaries?
  • Does the displayed freshness match the decision the view supports?
  • Are estimated cost and quality measures labeled with their source and calculation context?
  • Does each alert have an owner, meaningful context, a response path, and a tested threshold?
  • Are generated queries, summaries, and automated responses reviewed against telemetry and access rules?
  • Have platform prerequisites, data permissions, and operating costs been validated for the intended geography and deployment?
