This project uses a DFRobot Lark Weather Station Kit, a Seeed Studio XIAO ESP32S3 Sense and a Grove LoRa radio to collect weather readings and send them wirelessly to a receiver. The published example uses LoRa point-to-point (P2P) mode; it is not a complete LoRaWAN dashboard setup. One detail needs care before you reproduce it: the parts list says 868 MHz, while the example code passes 866 as its frequency argument.

What the weather station does

In Pradeep’s May 26, 2024 Hackster.io project, the Lark station supplies measurements over I2C to the XIAO ESP32S3 Sense. The board formats readings as a comma-separated string and sends it through a Grove LoRa radio. A second radio runs the example receiver, which prints the received string to a serial terminal. The project describes a measurement-and-transmission build, not a weather-forecasting system or a validated accuracy test.

The tutorial names the Lark fields as speed, direction, temperature, humidity and pressure. Its opening blurb mentions a Wio Terminal, but that conflicts with the listed XIAO board and the receiver sketch’s serial-terminal output. The parts list and code describe the build more concretely; the Wio Terminal should not be treated as a confirmed requirement. See the Hackster.io project and instructions.

Parts and development environment

  • Sensor: DFRobot Lark Weather Station Kit.
  • Controller: Seeed Studio XIAO ESP32S3 Sense.
  • Radio: Seeed Studio Grove – LoRa Radio 868MHz, as named in the project’s parts list.
  • Development environment: Arduino IDE. The project selects I2C for the Lark, which the tutorial says can also communicate over UART.

The project page was published in 2024. Check current hardware revisions, library compatibility and the tutorial’s full wiring and setup instructions before building; this article does not independently verify those details.

#1 Best Overall
Weather Meter Kit
  • Kit represents the three core components of weather measurement: wind speed, wind direction and rainfall.
  • It uses sealed magnetic reed switches and magnets so you'll need to source a voltage to take any measurements.
  • All of the sensors in the weather meter kit are passive components. This means you will need a voltage source in order to measure anything with them.
  • Sensors include Wind vane, Cup anemometer, Tipping bucket rain gauge. RJ11 terminated cables.
  • Stand: Two-part mounting mast, Rain gauge mounting arm, Wind meter mounting bar, 2x Mounting clamps and 4x Zip ties.

How the example sends readings

Sensor and controller

The XIAO communicates with the Lark over I2C. The example code obtains timestamps and values for “Speed,” “Dir,” “Temp,” “Humi” and “Pressure.” It then assembles those readings into a comma-separated payload for transmission.

Point-to-point radio link

The transmit sketch initializes LoRa E5 P2P mode and sends the payload. A matching receiver sketch initializes P2P mode, receives a packet and prints the incoming text. This is a direct radio link between the example node and receiver; the tutorial does not document a LoRaWAN gateway, network server or dashboard for this build.

Resolve the frequency mismatch before transmitting

The tutorial’s parts list identifies an 868 MHz Grove LoRa radio, but its P2P code uses a frequency argument of 866. Do not assume those values are interchangeable or copy the code’s frequency without checking your exact module and local radio requirements. Confirm the radio variant, the meaning and accepted units of the library’s P2P frequency argument, and the configuration used by the receiving peer.

Seeed Studio’s Grove LoRa-E5 product document describes LoRaWAN support on EU868 and US915 bands and says the end node, gateway and network must use a consistent frequency plan. That LoRaWAN information does not establish that the tutorial’s specific P2P argument is appropriate in every region. Follow the rules applicable where you operate the radio.

P2P and LoRaWAN are different setups

Approach What the cited material describes What to expect
Point-to-point (P2P) The Hackster tutorial’s code sends a comma-separated payload to a receiver that prints it in a serial terminal. A direct node-to-receiver example; no LoRaWAN backend or dashboard is documented for this project.
LoRaWAN Seeed’s product document describes LoRaWAN capability and EU868 and US915 support. A networked architecture requiring compatible node, gateway and network frequency configuration; it is not the tutorial’s demonstrated receiver workflow.

The radio document lists a 3.3–5 V supply range and a maximum output of +20 dBm at 3.3 V. It also gives “up to 10km” as an ideal open-space range, a manufacturer specification rather than a guaranteed operating distance for a weather station. Actual coverage depends on the installation and radio conditions.

Prototype wiring and the optional PCB

The project describes prototyping on a breadboard before moving to a custom PCB. The PCB is an optional refinement, not a stated prerequisite for the core build. The author mentions Seeed Fusion as a fabrication service, but the project’s central workflow is sensor readings over I2C followed by a LoRa P2P transmission.

What the project establishes—and what it does not

Pradeep concludes that the combination is “a powerful combination for anyone looking to set up a remote weather monitoring system.” That is the project author’s assessment. The page describes code and a build approach, but it does not provide independent measurements of sensor accuracy, radio range in a real installation, or long-term reliability.
