To build a Great League team in Pokémon GO, choose three Pokémon that each meet the 1,500 CP limit, complement one another’s type matchups, and give you workable options when you need to switch. First check whether you are entering open Great League or a limited-time cup: cups can add type restrictions and bans. There is no single universally best trio established by the official guidance cited here, and seasonal move changes mean older recommendations may no longer fit.
Check the format before choosing Pokémon
Open Great League allows Pokémon at or below 1,500 CP. A Battle Party contains three Pokémon, and Niantic recommends varying your party to take advantage of type matchups. See Niantic’s Trainer Battles guidance for the core rules and mechanics.
A named Great League cup may keep the same CP cap but narrow which Pokémon qualify. For example, the 2026 Pokémon North America International Championships Great League Edition imposed additional type restrictions and bans; those rules applied to that cup, not open Great League. Check the event’s cup rules before settling on a lineup.
Build for coverage, not just CP
Three Pokémon with CP near the limit are not necessarily a coherent team. For each candidate, consider what opposing types it can pressure, which types threaten it, and whether either teammate can help cover those weaknesses. Think about the trio together rather than judging each Pokémon in isolation.

- The packaging is Japanese, but item works the same as the US version.
- Catch Pokémon and track your rest rhythm with the Pokémon GO Plus + accessory!
- Keep track of your sleep with the press of a button
- Press and hold the central button on the Pokémon GO Plus + accessory and place it by your pillow to track your rest rhythm on the Pokémon Sleep app
- There’s a Pikachu within your Pokémon GO Plus + that can sing you lullabies and act as your morning alarm; Pikachu grows friendlier the more you sleep, unlocking even more sounds!
- Type coverage: Identify the types each Pokémon can challenge and the vulnerabilities your other two can help address.
- Move utility: Fast Attacks build energy for Charged Attacks. Compare current Fast Attack energy generation with Charged Attack power and energy cost; a move’s name alone does not tell you how useful it will be in battle.
- Switch options: Decide which teammate you could bring in when the lead faces an unfavorable matchup. Switching can help avoid a super-effective attack, but the opponent can continue attacking during the switch.
- Shield plan: Consider which member most needs to survive and how Protect Shields might preserve it. Shield and switch decisions affect how much damage your team can take and deal.
These are practical ways to apply the official mechanics, not a claim that a particular role assignment or trio is currently ranked best.
Verify moves and eligibility before investing
Check the active format’s rules and your Pokémon’s final CP before spending Stardust or candy. A Pokémon that fits open Great League may be excluded from a restricted cup, and powering it up can take it above the 1,500 CP ceiling. The official guidance cited here does not quantify the cost of preparing a Pokémon, so compare the resources required in the game rather than relying on a generic estimate.

- Pikachu hits the books and scribbles his way back to school
- Wireless controller with Bluetooth 5.0 technology
- Compact ergonomic shell with standard sized buttons & controls
- Features motion controls* and mappable Advanced Gaming Buttons
- LEDs for player number, button mapping, and low battery warning
Recheck moves as well. Niantic’s 2026 season update lists changes to move power, energy costs, and energy generation. A recommendation based on an older moveset or balance state may be stale even if the Pokémon remains eligible.
Account for the 2026 battle-system change
Niantic announced that rollout of its updated PvP battle system began June 23, 2026. The Pokémon GO team said the change “reinforces turn-based resolution at a foundational level, better mitigating the impact of network hiccups and device performance differences.” Read the official battle-system announcement for the change’s stated purpose.

- Auto catch Pokemon and collect items. Vibration feedback. Enjoy Pokemon Go on the move without looking at your smartphone! It will also tell you when it’s time to recharge the battery. If there is connection problem of the device, please make sure you have updated the app to the latest version.
- Device requires Bluetooth low-energy compatible smartphone with Pokémon GO app installed.
- Compatible with Android devices with 2 GB RAM or more, Bluetooth Smart (Bluetooth Ver. 4.0 or higher) capability, and Android Ver. 4.4-6.0 installed.
- Compatible with iPhone 5/5c/5s/SE/6/6s/6s Plus/7/7 Plus devices with iOS Ver. 8-10 installed.
- Please charge for two hours before use it. If the device can't be connected after update ( no matter phone's or the product's update ) , please delete the bluetooth history of the device and pair again in the game.
Because the system changed, avoid assuming that timing advice or strategy built around older battle interactions still applies unchanged. Use current move information and your own battles to judge how a team performs under the active system.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Practice, then revise the trio
After assembling a legal team, battle with it and note what is actually causing difficulty: repeated unfavorable matchups, a lead that struggles to contribute, or a switch or shield decision that leaves a key Pokémon exposed. Use those observations to decide whether to change a member, moves, or your plan for handling a bad lead. Niantic’s beginner battle tips cover foundational switching and shield decisions; because that guidance predates the 2026 system transition, treat it as general advice rather than a complete description of current strategy.
There is no official evidence in these cited sources establishing one strongest current three-Pokémon team, a usage list, or team win rates. Choose candidates you can field, confirm they fit the active rules, and evaluate their coverage and moves in the format you intend to play.
