Use a simple, consistent shelf order and a searchable catalog that records the exact release, format, set details, and shelf location. Alphabetical order is a reliable starting point; scan barcodes to save time, but check each match against the case before you add it.
Choose a shelf order your household can remember
Pick one rule people can apply both when browsing and when putting a case back. For a straightforward home library, alphabetize by title. If it is easier to browse DVDs and Blu-rays separately, create one section for each format and alphabetize within both. Either approach works; consistency matters more than finding a supposedly universal arrangement.
You can also group by franchise, genre, or another preference, but choose a stable rule and make each title’s location searchable in your catalog. For box sets, decide whether to file them under the set name or alongside the relevant films, then apply that choice consistently.

A film title alone may not identify the copy you own: the DVD and Blu-ray editions can have different packaging or contents. Begin with the details that help distinguish a release and locate it on the shelf.

- Title and format: record the title as it appears on the case and whether it is DVD or Blu-ray.
- Edition or release: capture an edition name or identifier when available, especially when you own multiple versions.
- Set details: note the box-set name and relevant film, disc, season, or episode information for multi-disc collections.
- Physical location: record a room, shelf, and row or section if your catalog supports location fields.
- Useful optional details: genre, director, release year, watched or loan status, and notes about missing or damaged packaging.
Catalog tools differ in how much detail they support. My Movies describes records for titles, TV seasons and episodes, and box sets, as well as filters for watched status and groups or types. Enter your collection without losing track of shelf locations
- Work one shelf or section at a time. Record each case where it sits before moving on, so you can preserve its location in the catalog.
- Scan the barcode if your catalog supports it. Barcode entry can reduce typing. My Movies describes camera scanning and barcode or title lookup; DVD Profiler describes UPC entry, disc recognition, and title search.
- Check the result against the actual case. Confirm the title, cover, format, and release details. A barcode result is a candidate match, not proof that the catalog has identified your precise edition.
- Use title search or manual entry if scanning fails. Add a note for unusual editions or details the catalog cannot represent clearly.
- Keep set relationships visible. For a box set or TV collection, record the set name and the film, disc, season, or episode detail you will need when searching.
My Movies describes barcode scanning, title entry, disc identification, and support for box sets and TV seasons or episodes. Test the catalog with the questions you actually ask
Before cataloging a large collection, try a small group of cases and check whether the catalog can answer practical questions:
- Do I already own this title while I am shopping?
- Where is the case on the shelf?
- Which films have I not watched?
- What titles are included in this box set?
- Who borrowed this disc?
Choose a tool whose search, filters, and set records fit those tasks, and that is convenient on the device where you will check the collection. Before committing hundreds of entries, check whether the tool lets you export or back up your catalog and try that process with a small inventory. The vendor pages describe features, but do not establish export or backup behavior across products or guarantee future service.

Store and handle discs carefully
The Library of Congress recommends clean handling, keeping food and drink away, avoiding contact with the playing surface, and holding optical discs by the edge and center hole. It also advises storing formats upright and using sturdy shelving. Read the Library of Congress collection-care guidance.

For a shelf-based library, use readable labels or dividers if they help define sections, and leave room for new cases so every addition does not force a full resort. Return discs to their cases after viewing. If you buy a shelf, measure your cases and check the shelf’s dimensions and load rating rather than assuming any media shelf will fit or support them.
