Build your Dragon Ball Legends PvE team around characters whose Z Abilities strengthen the Tags or Episodes shared by your intended fighters. Use all six party slots: choose up to three characters to fight, and use the remaining slots for compatible Z Ability support. Then adapt the lineup to the specific Story battle instead of relying on rarity or a supposedly universal best team.
How to find characters that work well together
- Check your characters’ details. Look at each character’s Tags and Episodes, then note which Tags or Episodes their Z Abilities strengthen.
- Filter your roster in Party Formation. Use the Party Formation filters to find characters with matching Tags or Episodes, as Bandai Namco recommends in its party formation FAQ.
- Compare the buffs with your intended fighters. Favor Z Abilities that apply to several characters you plan to take into battle, rather than choosing a character just because it is rare or powerful on its own.
Tags and Episodes are useful ways to identify shared team synergy. They are not a promise that one combination will suit every encounter; the characters you own and the demands of the battle still matter.
How to use all six party slots
A party has six characters, and you select up to three of them as battle members. The other party members can still help: their Z Abilities can strengthen eligible allies even when they do not enter the fight. That makes the full party a support structure, not just a list of backup fighters.

Then use the remaining slots for characters whose Z Abilities cover those fighters’ Tags or Episodes. Producer TOSHI describes the same principle in an interview on the official Dragon Ball site: the three characters who do not fight can still contribute a lot. This is general team-building guidance, not a current ranking of characters.

Why rarity is not enough
Rarity can indicate a character’s strength, but a party made only of rare characters is not automatically effective. Bandai Namco’s rarity FAQ also points to party formation, strategy, and training as factors to consider.
When comparing candidate parties, check whether the Z Ability buffs reach your intended battle members, whether the party shares Tags or Episodes that those abilities support, whether the characters are trained and usable at your progression, and whether the formation suits the encounter. There is no supported numeric threshold that guarantees a good team.

Adapt the party to the Story battle
Dragon Ball Legends distinguishes Main Story from Event Stories on its official mode page. The available official guidance does not establish one PvE lineup that works for every Story encounter. Treat shared-Tag or shared-Episode synergy as your starting point, then adjust for the battle’s stated conditions and the characters available in your roster.
If a formation struggles, revisit which three characters you send into battle and whether the supporting Z Abilities apply to them. Try different formations in Story modes and events, as Bandai Namco advises, rather than assuming rarity alone will solve the problem.
