A discreet Apple Home sensor with a verified seven-year battery life is not demonstrated by the available examples. You can design toward that target, but you need to define the sensing task, radio behavior, battery and reporting schedule—and measure the complete device in operation before claiming a runtime. A documented DIY Matter-over-Thread project offers useful implementation and power-measurement detail, but it pairs with Home Assistant and its author describes it as bench-verified, not a finished assembled device.
What a seven-year battery target requires
Start by treating seven years as a requirement to test, not a result to promise. Battery life depends on the complete device’s average power use over time, including sensing, radio activity and periods of sleep. A microcontroller’s advertised deep-sleep current—or one low bench reading—cannot establish the runtime of a finished sensor.
Make the estimate explicit. A useful power budget accounts for usable battery capacity and average current across sleep and wake periods, sensor activity, radio check-ins, reporting intervals, retries, battery self-discharge, temperature and a low-battery reserve. These are engineering considerations, not a seven-year result established by the cited projects.
Measure the complete device
Test the assembled prototype in its intended operating mode, with the sensor, firmware, radio, enclosure and reporting behavior it will actually use. Observe both quiet periods and events that wake the device or trigger communication. Keep the operating conditions with the measurements, and describe the resulting runtime as an estimate unless it has been validated over a meaningful period.

Choose the sensing job before the parts
Decide what the accessory needs to detect: a door or window opening, motion, presence, temperature, a leak or another condition. The sensing method and how often it reports determine how often the device wakes and how much work it does. A discreet enclosure or small development board does not by itself make a sensor low-power; the complete sensing and reporting pattern matters.
Plan the Apple Home and Thread path
Apple Home compatibility is not established just by connecting a sensor module to an ESP board. The accessory needs a supported Matter or HomeKit implementation, and its interoperability and reliability need to be verified. Apple’s Matter Accessory Interoperability – Best Practices, dated October 7, 2025, is guidance for accessory manufacturers and SoC providers. Apple says it is intended to help ensure implementations “are interoperable and work reliably when paired with Apple Home.”

For a Matter-over-Thread design, plan for Thread network infrastructure as well as the accessory. Home Assistant’s HomeKit Device documentation says HomeKit-over-Thread setup requires a working Thread border router and gives Apple devices such as HomePod mini as an example. Pairing and interoperability still need to be checked for the exact implementation; having a border router does not prove that a particular custom build works directly with Apple Home.

The open-source homecadia project documents an ESP32-C6, Matter over Thread, a sensor and an e-paper display. Its author reports bench measurements of 125 µA while paired and settled, and 19.7 µA in unpaired deep sleep. Those readings describe that project’s test states, not a finished Apple Home sensor’s average current or battery life.

The project author describes the unit as bench-verified and not yet assembled as a finished device. The documented implementation commissions to Home Assistant; it does not establish direct Apple Home operation or a seven-year runtime. Use it as an example of the implementation detail and measurement work a build requires, not as proof that a different sensor—or even a completed version of the same design—will meet the target.
Build or buy: what current examples establish
Finished products provide a useful reference point, but the runtime figures below are manufacturer claims, not independent measurements or guarantees. Their sensing functions differ, so they are not direct substitutes for every custom build.

- [Easy to Install & Long Battery Life] Thanks to its compact wireless design and adjustable stand, the Sensor P2 can easily be installed on a wall, ceiling or a particular zone, and set up with ease. The Motion Detector and Light Sensor P2 has a powerful 2*CR2450 Lithium battery and provides up to 2 years of power for round-the-clock security, one of the longest battery life among Matter over Thread sensors. For best performance, keep a clear distance of 1.5 to 2 meters from infrared devices.
| Option | Sensing and Apple Home route | Battery and stated runtime | What the claim means |
|---|---|---|---|
| Aqara Presence Multi-Sensor FP300 | PIR and mmWave presence sensing, plus temperature, light and humidity; manufacturer says it works with Apple Home via Matter in Thread mode. | Two CR2450 cells; Aqara states up to 2 years on Thread. | Aqara says life varies with settings and usage. The figure is a manufacturer-stated maximum, not an independently verified result. See the FP300 product page. |
| GL.iNet LWR02 | Presence, motion, temperature, humidity and ambient-light sensing; manufacturer states Matter-over-Thread compatibility with Apple Home. | Two AAA batteries; GL.iNet states up to 2 years. | This is a manufacturer claim, not an independently verified result. Check the LWR02 product page for current specifications and availability. |
| Custom ESP32-C6 / homecadia example | Matter over Thread; the documented project commissions to Home Assistant. Direct Apple Home operation is not established by the project. | The project page reports 125 µA paired and settled, and 19.7 µA unpaired in deep sleep; it does not establish battery capacity or a seven-year runtime. | Author-reported bench measurements from a project described as not yet a finished assembled unit. See the project documentation. |
The FP300 and LWR02 show that current ready-made examples reviewed here advertise up to two years, not seven. A custom build gives you control over the sensing behavior and design, but requires you to handle firmware, commissioning, enclosure work, battery replacement planning and validation. A finished product reduces that build effort, but its advertised runtime still depends on the maker’s stated conditions and may not match your use.
Verify security claims at the right level
Apple’s HomeKit communication security documentation describes commands as end-to-end encrypted and authenticated from a user’s device to the home hub, then forwarded to the accessory through HAP or Matter. This describes Apple’s platform communication model; it is not a security assessment or certification of a custom device.
