For a detailed The Witcher 3 cosplay, start with CD PROJEKT RED’s official guide for your chosen character, decide which costume version to portray, and build around the rules of the event where you will wear it. The publisher highlights Geralt’s battle-worn armor, a sword for Ciri, and Yennefer’s black-and-white look; it also provides guides for Triss. “Extreme” here means an ambitious build, not an official difficulty level.
Choose a character and reference
CD PROJEKT RED provides downloadable cosplay guides for Geralt, Yennefer, Ciri, and Triss. Pick the guide that matches your character, then settle on a particular game look or costume variation before gathering materials. The publisher’s page confirms that the guides are available, but does not describe their measurements, patterns, materials, or construction instructions.
Use the desired look, your available time and skills, and the destination’s prop rules to shape the project. The publisher presents armor recreation, sword crafting, and character styling as possible cosplay goals, but does not rank the characters or builds by difficulty.

Break the costume into manageable components so you can test fit and movement before committing to surface detail.

- Clothing: Identify the garments that form the base of the chosen look.
- Armor or structured pieces: List the pieces that create the silhouette, then choose materials based on appearance, comfort, mobility, weight, durability, repairability, cost, skill, and build time.
- Footwear and styling: Account for shoes or boots, hair, and other styling details that help complete the character.
- Optional props: Treat swords and other accessories as separate decisions, because event rules may restrict them even when the costume itself is allowed.
EVA foam sheets are one practical material to consider for cosplay armor, but they are not prescribed by CD PROJEKT RED. Compare any material against the look you want and the conditions in which you will wear the costume; there is no publisher-endorsed materials comparison or performance test to rely on here.
Prototype fit and movement before adding detail
Try on the main pieces before investing time in paint, trim, or other finishing work. Check whether you can sit, walk, raise and move your arms, see clearly, and tolerate the costume’s heat. These checks help reveal fit or mobility problems while they are still easier to address.

Plan for practical repairs as well as appearance: consider which parts may need adjustment or reinforcement after being worn, and whether you can fix them without dismantling the costume. This is build-planning advice, not a construction method supplied in the official character guides.

Read the venue’s current rules before making or bringing a sword, weapon-shaped accessory, or other long prop. Look for restrictions on dimensions, materials and shapes, as well as inspection procedures and rules for carrying or handling props. A soft or toy-like appearance does not guarantee admission.

Tokyo Game Show 2026 offers one particularly restrictive example: its cosplay-area rules prohibit swords and items that are at least 50 cm long, along with specified weapon- and armor-related items such as firearms and chains. The rules say clearly identifiable toys or soft imitations may be acceptable, subject to the full requirements and staff judgment. These are Tokyo Game Show-specific rules, not a standard for conventions elsewhere.

CD PROJEKT RED says fans may create game-inspired cosplay, share it on social media, and wear it at conventions, fairs, and meet-ups. Its cosplay guidance says not to sell the cosplay, use it to promote other companies or products, claim official sponsorship, or do anything offensive or illegal while wearing it.

The publisher’s broader Fan Content Guideline, last updated December 10, 2020, lists cosplay props and cosplaying game characters as acceptable fan-content examples. It asks creators to make the unofficial status clear, using wording such as: “This is an unofficial fan work and is not approved/endorsed by CD PROJEKT RED.” The guideline generally restricts commercial use of fan content; its exceptions for monetized video and streaming through certain platform partner programs do not grant permission to sell cosplay.
