You can’t guarantee that a base will survive every raid. You can make it slower, riskier, and less rewarding to attack—and limit the damage if attackers break through. Start by checking the rules for your specific game and server, then build layers you can afford to maintain, remove easy bypasses, and keep a recovery plan.
Check the raid rules before you build
“Survival game” covers very different building and damage systems. Before settling on a design, identify the game and version, mode, server type, team size, and any mods or raid-window settings. Confirm how the rules handle:

- Upkeep, decay, and building authorization
- Damage from explosives, fire, weapons, or tools
- Offline protection, raid windows, and traps
- Storage access, respawns, and backup locations
Do not transfer a build cost, damage value, or defensive tactic from one game to another without checking its current rules. The Rust examples below are specific to Rust, not Minecraft, DayZ, ARK, or community-server configurations.
Choose a footprint you can maintain
Build for your actual needs
Begin with the smallest footprint that fits your team, storage, and crafting needs. Add rooms or outer layers only when the extra delay or protection is worth the added materials and maintenance. A sprawling base can become a liability if you cannot keep it supplied or protected.

Account for upkeep and coverage
In Rust, the Tool Cupboard (TC) provides building privilege and stores materials for upkeep. The official Tool Cupboard reference says separate buildings require a TC to prevent decay. It also lists decay times after upkeep runs out: twig, 1 hour; wood, 3 hours; stone, 5 hours; metal, 8 hours; and armored, 12 hours. These are Rust documentation values; patches and server settings can affect what applies in play.
Rust’s upkeep system was introduced in part to constrain very large builds. Facepunch’s Building 3.0 post describes exposed outer pieces decaying before the core when upkeep is insufficient. Treat that as design context, not a current recipe: verify the live mechanics and ensure every part of your design is covered and affordable.
Make several routes to the core inconvenient
Do not rely on one hidden entrance or a single supposedly correct raid path. Attackers may choose a route you did not anticipate, so make likely approaches costly and awkward: use layers, separate essential storage from easy-access areas, and avoid putting the best loot immediately behind the easiest door or wall.
There is no universal formula for an unraidable base. Facepunch’s Devblog 158 says Rust raiding “shouldn’t be a fixed equation of sulfur and explosives to get to the loot” and should involve “planning, risk and reward.” That is a statement about Rust’s design, not a promise about any particular build or a rule shared by other games.

Find and strengthen the cheap bypasses
A strong wall does little good if a nearby door, ceiling, floor, window, or soft-side surface offers a cheaper way in. Walk the likely approaches to valuable rooms and check the current breach cost for each surface and opening in your game. Include exposed storage and utility in that review.
Rust’s official Rocket reference lists these rocket requirements by structure grade and door type:
| Target | Rockets listed by the Rust reference |
|---|---|
| Twig | 1 |
| Wood | 2 |
| Stone | 4 |
| Metal | 8 |
| Armored | 15 |
| Wooden door | 1 |
| Sheet metal door | 2 |
| Garage door | 3 |
| Armored door | 4 |
These are Rust-specific in-game values from the cited reference, not estimates for another title. The Rust Wiki’s Wooden Door page also describes that door as weak against fire and explosives. Check current game-specific data before choosing materials or assuming a route is secure.
Make defenses useful during an online raid
Where your game supports them, consider sight lines, protected firing positions, traps, alarms, and cover that give defenders a chance to respond. Keep defenses maintainable, and make sure they do not block your own movement or access to essential rooms. No single trap or turret arrangement is established as best across games, modes, or servers.

Plan for recovery if attackers get in
Where the rules allow it, avoid keeping every critical resource, piece of equipment, and respawn option in one compartment. Distribute backups or keep a low-cost fallback location if permitted. This can reduce the cost of a successful raid and help you return to play; it does not prevent a breach.
Test the design before investing heavily
If the game offers a creative mode, build server, or other test environment, use it to check access routes, structural stability, sight lines, and upkeep before committing scarce resources. Rust documents a built-in Creative Mode that can allow unrestricted building when enabled on a server; availability and permissions differ by title and server. A test build can reveal construction problems, but it cannot predict every attacker’s choices.
Choose trade-offs that fit your team
Compare candidate designs by how they perform on the routes attackers are most likely to use, not just by the strength of the best wall. Weigh raid delay against upkeep, build time, online defense, construction complexity, storage capacity, and recovery after a breach. The right balance depends on your game’s rules, server settings, team size, and progression stage; without those details, there is no reliable numeric winner.
