Build your team around the activity, the fighters and pets you have developed, and any active stage buff—not around a single supposedly best lineup. Check Synergy effects, cover the encounter’s needs, and adjust your formation when a fight goes badly. Team size also depends on progression: Netmarble’s April 16, 2026 update expanded Story Stage deployment from five to nine fighters as slots unlock, while decks can contain five to 25 fighters and formations.

Start with the activity and its requirements

The King of Fighters AFK is presented as a 5-vs-5 game, but that description is not a universal limit on every formation. Story Stage deployment can expand as you progress, and deck size is a separate matter. Before choosing fighters, check the current mode, stage details, and available deployment slots.

For Challenge content, Netmarble’s official tips advise checking the stage buff and choosing fighters that match its Sun, Moon, or Star attribute where appropriate. The same advice recommends well-leveled fighters and useful Synergy effects. These considerations are more actionable than copying a fixed lineup that may not fit your stage or roster.

Build around your developed roster

Begin with fighters and pets you actually own and have developed. A nominally suitable role or Synergy is not automatically a better choice than a substantially more developed option; compare the available choices against the encounter rather than assuming every account should use the same names.

Synergy is a composition consideration, not a substitute for answering the stage’s needs. Official materials describe Synergy effects among fighters and pets, but exact thresholds and effects can change. Check the current in-game Synergy details before committing to a particular combination. An official event notice described activation with two or more fighters and pets sharing a Synergy; treat that as an example, not a guarantee that every current effect uses that threshold.

Use role balance as a starting point, not a rule

If your roster is small and you are unsure where to begin, BlueStacks offers one example: one tank, two damage dealers, one support, and one flexible slot. That is third-party guide advice, not an official formula or a proven best team. Use it as a way to think about durability, damage, and support, then adapt it to the fight and any useful Synergy you can activate.

  • Whether the lineup can handle the encounter’s demands, including durability, damage, and support.
  • Whether the fighters and pets activate a useful Synergy under the current in-game requirements.
  • Whether the lineup matches a relevant Sun, Moon, or Star stage buff.
  • How developed each candidate is.
  • The mode, enemy setup, and currently unlocked deployment capacity.

Adjust the formation when a fight fails

The game’s official listing encourages different placements and combinations. BlueStacks also recommends changing lineups for different activities, such as campaign stages, dungeons, and events, and offers role-position suggestions. Treat specific placement advice as a guide’s recommendation rather than a universal rule: the useful arrangement depends on the fight and your available fighters.

  1. Read the stage or encounter details, including any active buff.
  2. Check your fighters’ development and the Synergy effects available from your fighters and pets.
  3. Choose a lineup that covers the fight’s needs; if your roster is limited, use the role-balance example as a starting point.
  4. If the lineup fails, reassess the enemy setup, stage buff, members, and placements before trying again.
  5. As Story Stage progression unlocks more slots, revisit the full formation instead of carrying over an early five-fighter setup by default.

Understand team size and progression

Netmarble’s April 16, 2026 update said Story Stage deployment expanded from five to nine fighters, with additional slots unlocking progressively through stage progression. The same announcement said players could create decks combining five to 25 different fighters and formations. These figures describe different systems: the deck range is not the number deployed in every individual Story Stage. Because the announcement is date-specific, check the current game for later changes.

Netmarble describes the game at a high level as 5-vs-5, while its Google Play listing emphasizes adapting to fights with different placements and combinations. Read those as broad descriptions of the game, not as a reason to force one lineup or one team size across every activity.
