Build around roles, not a fixed list of “best” jobs: make sure your four active characters can deal damage, recover from danger, and bring useful support or control. Then adjust jobs and learned abilities as the story unlocks them and as upcoming encounters demand. No single lineup is best for every version or stage of Final Fantasy V.
Start with the party’s jobs and ABP
Jobs determine a character’s commands, traits, equipment access, and attributes. As the story progresses, new jobs become available. Battles award ABP, which advances job levels and unlocks abilities; it is separate from ordinary character leveling. Nintendo’s Wii Virtual Console manual explains the job system and describes several roles, while edition-specific guides can help identify abilities for a particular release.

Changing jobs changes what a character can do, but abilities learned in one job can be equipped after switching. Each character learns abilities individually, so one character’s job history does not automatically give those abilities to the others. Plan who will learn important commands rather than assuming the whole party shares them.

Cover the roles your party needs
Use these responsibilities as a flexible checklist. One character can cover more than one role when the right ability has been learned.
#1 Best Overall
- Experience Final Fantasy V in its purest form! Improved graphics, a new translation, and a remixed soundtrack bring new life to Bartz, Lenna, and Ganulf in their fight against the evil Exdeath!
- Expand your enjoyment with a detailed monster bestiary and a music player. Study your foes and learn their weaknesses, or enjoy the enhanced Final Fantasy soundtrack anytime you want!
- Explore the Sealed Ruin, a massive bonus dungeon filled with challenges, and fight the dungeon's newly designed boss using specially added jobs like the brutal gladiator, the sinister necromancer, and the dynamite bomber!
- Damage: Keep dependable ways to defeat both individual enemies and groups. Nintendo describes the Knight as balanced in attack and defense, the Black Mage as strong against groups, and the Monk as a high-HP source of unarmed damage and counters.
- Recovery: Keep healing or another reliable recovery option available. Nintendo calls the White Mage a valuable healer; for demanding bosses or dungeons, a second character with a learned support or recovery command can give the group more room to respond.
- Support and control: Add useful abilities when they are available and relevant. Nintendo notes that Time Mage support is particularly useful in boss fights. Blue Magic and other support abilities can also answer particular encounters, but are not mandatory.
- Protection and utility: Knight can protect vulnerable allies. Thief brings exploration and surprise-protection benefits as well as battle utility. Dragoon’s Jump can deal damage from the back row, according to The FFV FAQ. Choose these for what they contribute, not because every party must include them.
Build a starting lineup, then adapt it
- Choose one character for a dependable damage path using jobs and equipment already available.
- Keep a dedicated healer or another reliable recovery option in the party.
- Give at least one character a useful support or control command if it has been unlocked and learned.
- Use the remaining command capacity for additional damage or support that suits the next encounters.
- Reassess after each crystal or job unlock, and when ABP opens an ability that fills a real gap. If the party is handling the current content comfortably, there is no need to grind for an advanced combination.
This is a role-based framework, not an officially prescribed lineup. The best job names and combinations depend on story progress, player preference, and edition.
Spend ABP on useful milestones, not every possible mastery
Prioritize abilities that improve the fights you are facing now. A job-planning guide recommends maintaining both damage and healing rather than letting long-term job plans undermine the party along the way. The Pixel Remaster guide lists accessible early milestones such as White Magic, Black Magic, Time Magic, and other utility abilities; check its advice against your edition because job and ability details can differ.
Mastering jobs can be a longer-term goal. Job-planning references describe the Freelancer gaining passive traits and attribute bonuses from mastered jobs, while the Pixel Remaster guide also discusses benefits for Freelancer and Mime. These are reasons to pursue mastery for an endgame build or completion goal, not prerequisites for a balanced party during ordinary progression.
Put characters in rows that suit their jobs
Use the formation controls described in Nintendo’s Wii Virtual Console manual to set front and back rows deliberately. Put compatible magic users and ranged attackers in the back; characters relying on ordinary close-range physical attacks generally belong in the front. Check a job’s equipment access and attack style before deciding where it fits.
Rank #3
- Original Super Famicom Version of Final Fantasy V
- Not Released in the US until the PS1 Version
- Gorgeous Graphics and an Engaging Storyline
- Only Playable on a Japanese Super Famicom or Modded SNES System
The manual also notes that multi-target magic is weaker per target than casting on one target. Use an all-target spell when covering several enemies matters more than damage concentration; choose a single target when focusing on one enemy is the priority.
Compare a setup against the next challenge
Before committing ABP or changing jobs, consider what the party needs and what is actually available:
| Decision factor | Question to ask |
|---|---|
| Role coverage | Can the group deal reliable damage, recover, and respond to dangerous encounters? |
| Story availability | Are the jobs, spells, equipment, and abilities already unlocked? |
| ABP investment | Is this ability worth delaying other job abilities? |
| Equipment and row | Can this job use suitable gear, and should the character fight from the front or back? |
| Encounter fit | Does the next challenge favor single-target focus, area damage, defense, healing, or control? |
| Flexibility | Can a character use an ability learned in another job to fill the gap without rebuilding the entire lineup? |
Check the advice against your edition
The cited Nintendo manual is for the Wii Virtual Console release, and the 22-job count in the cited guide applies to the Pixel Remaster. The Game Boy Advance release added four bonus jobs relative to earlier releases. Do not treat one edition’s full job list, names, or late-game combinations as universal; confirm the version when following exact job or ability advice. The Pixel Remaster reference is Vorxu’s All 22 Jobs Guide, and the version distinction is covered in this job overview.
