Build your party around the fighters you want to take into battle, then use the remaining slots to make their Z Abilities apply, cover Element matchups, and support the roles your lineup needs. In Dragon Ball Legends, a regular party can hold up to six characters, so your bench matters too. Check the formation indicators and Ability Bonus in-game: a shared Tag alone does not guarantee that every ability affects every fighter.
Start with the fighters you want to deploy
There is no universal “best team” for every account or mode. Start with the strongest characters you own and actually want to use, then inspect each character’s details for its Tags, Element, and ability text. Those details determine which supporting characters can help and where your lineup may have a matchup gap.
Before filling the party, decide which fighters are your intended battle members and what each contributes. This keeps the build focused on your chosen fighters rather than on collecting six individually strong characters who do not work together.
Make Z Abilities apply to the team
A practical foundation is to choose a shared Tag and look for bench characters whose Z Abilities target that Tag. For example, the Dragon Ball Legends Management Team’s beginner guidance uses a Saiyan party to explain how to match characters with Z Abilities that support Saiyans: “Let’s Go, Legends!” beginner guidance (May 13, 2026).

During party formation, check the indicator on each character icon. It shows whether abilities are being applied; the displayed number tells you how many Z and Zenkai Abilities affect that character. Use this check rather than assuming an ability applies because two characters appear to share a Tag. Individual ability descriptions can have additional target requirements.
Use the bench to strengthen your battle members
A regular party can contain up to six characters, and a character does not have to be selected for battle to contribute an applicable Z Ability. That makes the bench an active part of your build: fill its slots with characters whose ability targets match the fighters you plan to deploy, rather than treating unused slots as decoration.

Review Ability Bonus to assess the combined effects of Z Abilities, Zenkai Abilities, and equipment. It is a useful overview, not a substitute for reading the conditions on each ability or equipment item. When comparing two possible parties, look at which deployed fighters actually receive useful effects, not only the overall bonus figure.
Use the Leader slot only when its rules help
In regular modes and Super Space-Time Rush, a party can have a Leader. When that Leader participates in battle, it receives the other party members’ Z Ability effects, and the rest of the party receives the Leader’s Z Ability effects. This can help bring a favorite fighter into a party even when its Tag does not otherwise fit the group.

The Leader rule is mode-specific. Dragon Ball Legends Help says Co-op, Co-op Raid, Tournament of Power, and Guild Battle parties do not have a Leader slot. It also applies to Z Abilities; do not assume Leader status extends Zenkai, Unique, or ULTRA Abilities. Check the mode and ability type before building around this interaction: Dragon Ball Legends Help: Characters.
Plan for Element matchups as well as Tags
Tag synergy does not remove Element disadvantages. Consider whether your selected fighters leave you without a useful option against unfavorable matchups, and weigh Element coverage alongside ability coverage and each fighter’s role.

Supporters use a distinct system. A May 13, 2026 notice describes a Supporter deck of six, with one supporter deployed during battle. Supporters have Support Abilities and Support Z Abilities, so do not count them as though they were simply ordinary party members sitting on the bench. Check which Supporter effects apply in the mode you are playing and how their conditions work: Dragon Ball Legends Management Team: About Supporters.

Compare builds and verify them in formation
If you have two plausible parties, compare the parts that affect your actual battle choices:
- Ability coverage: Which deployed fighters receive useful Z or Zenkai effects, and are each ability’s stated conditions met?
- Leader value: Does the mode have a Leader slot, and does the Leader gain meaningful Z Ability support?
- Element coverage: Do you have options for unfavorable matchups without giving up too much Tag or ability synergy?
- Equipment and Supporters: Does applicable equipment improve the chosen fighters, and are Supporter effects available and relevant in the mode?
Then verify the party’s formation indicators and Ability Bonus in-game, and adjust any character whose expected support is not applying. Recommended Allies and Recommended Equipment can offer ideas based on usage by high-Battle-Rank players when usage data is available; treat them as references to investigate, not proof that a recommendation suits your collection or mode. Character availability and ability text can change, so use the current in-game details when making the final choice.
