To stay disciplined when working from home, make it easier to start and harder to drift: choose a workable low-distraction spot, write a short plan, change one condition that routinely distracts you, and set realistic work-home boundaries. These steps can support focus, but evidence does not show one routine that works for everyone or guarantee higher output.
Why discipline at home depends on more than willpower
Self-control is not simply a fixed personal resource. A mixed-methods study of people working from home during the COVID-19 crisis found that workers used both situational strategies—changing physical, bodily or social conditions—and cognitive strategies such as setting goals, planning and scheduling, and drawing on autonomous motivation. In the study’s quantitative sample, modifying somatic conditions and autonomous motivation were significantly associated with job performance and mediated the association between trait self-control and performance. These findings make strategy worth trying; they do not establish that any one tactic causes better performance for every remote worker. Applied Psychology study via PubMed (2021).
Natural discipline is not destiny, either. A three-wave study of UK workers during the pandemic found that higher trait self-control was generally associated with better self-assessed performance and fewer distractions. But workers with lower trait self-control also reported fewer distractions and improved performance over time. Struggling to focus at first does not mean you cannot adapt. PLOS ONE study (2023).
Research on remote-work productivity is mixed, which is one reason to treat the following suggestions as experiments rather than promises. A 2022 review of 37 studies found that, among its pre-pandemic papers, 19 (79%) reported positive performance or productivity effects and 5 (21%) reported mixed or no effects. For pandemic-period papers, 3 (23%) reported positive effects, 5 (38%) mixed results, and 5 (38%) negative effects. These are shares of studies included in that review—not percentages of workers who became more or less productive. A separate 2023 review of 27 pandemic-era studies found no clear overall consensus on productivity or mental-health outcomes. Circumstances such as whether homeworking is voluntary, full-time or happening amid wider disruption matter. 2022 systematic review; 2023 systematic review.

How to create a workable setup
Choose one recognizable work area
Use the most workable low-distraction place available, even if it is a shared table rather than a separate office. Keep the tools for your next task within reach and remove one obvious distraction before you begin. Access to a dedicated room and reliable technology varies; a perfect home office is not a prerequisite for trying to make your work area more usable. The NIH Office of Behavioral and Social Sciences Research’s 2022 report recommends intentional choices for remote and hybrid environments, noting that not every in-person approach translates well. NIH, The Future of Work: Behavioral and Social Science-Informed Considerations for a Hybrid Work Environment (2022).
Make the first step concrete
Write down a small number of priorities, decide when you will begin each, and define the first physical action. Instead of “work on the report,” try “open the draft and outline three sections.” Planning and scheduling were among the strategies reported in the work-from-home self-control study. A notebook is optional: use whatever format makes the plan easy to see and follow. The study did not test planners or a particular planning tool. Applied Psychology study via PubMed (2021).

How to reduce procrastination and distractions
Change one trigger before it pulls you away
Notice what most often interrupts your start or breaks your concentration: a phone, household activity, or a browser full of unrelated tabs. Before the next work block, make one specific change to that condition—for example, move the phone out of reach or close tabs you do not need. The study supports changing the situation as a category of strategy; it does not establish that a particular blocking app or trick is effective.
Plan around household interruptions
If interruptions are predictable, agree on a practical way to handle them where possible. A shared signal, a defined availability window, or a plan for urgent interruptions may fit better than expecting everyone at home to treat the workday as an office. What is realistic depends on your household and job; the aim is to reduce avoidable interruptions without assuming you control every circumstance.

How to set boundaries and take breaks
Choose a realistic start and stop time
Decide when you intend to begin and finish, communicate availability where your role calls for it, and use a clear end-of-day action such as closing work applications. Remote workers can face pressure from being continually connected. A two-wave questionnaire study of 461 remote workers in China, published in 2023, associated work–nonwork conflict with impaired self-control capacity; the indirect association was weaker for workers who perceived greater control over their boundaries. This is an association in a specific sample, not proof that a particular boundary-setting method will produce the same result for everyone. Boundary-control study (2023).
The NIH report also cites the American Psychological Association’s 2021 Work and Wellbeing Survey: 34% of employees said flexible hours would help their mental health. That figure describes a reported preference; it is not evidence that flexible hours increase discipline or productivity.

Make breaks deliberate, not performative
Schedule breaks if doing so helps you take them, and do not treat constant online presence as a measure of useful work. A 2023 qualitative study documented workers’ difficulty taking breaks without office conventions and the guilt some felt about not appearing online. It did not establish an optimal work-to-break ratio, so choose a cadence that fits your workload and needs rather than following a supposedly universal interval. Rest-break study (2023).
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesHow to tell whether your routine is helping
At the end of the day, note which planned task you completed and which condition made it easier or harder to work. Use that observation to adjust one part of the setup or plan for the next day. This is a practical way to apply the evidence’s emphasis on planning and changing conditions; it was not itself tested as an intervention in the cited studies.

Keep the test small enough to interpret. If you change your workspace, schedule and notification habits all at once, it may be difficult to tell which change helped. A useful adjustment should make starting easier, reduce a known distraction, fit your household and job constraints, and preserve a sustainable boundary between work and home. Those are practical decision criteria, not a validated ranking of techniques.
What the evidence can—and cannot—tell you
Much of the directly relevant research examined homeworking during the COVID-19 period. Its results should not be treated as a definitive test of today’s varied remote-work arrangements. Some studies use self-reported outcomes or focus on particular countries and worker samples, which limits how widely their findings can be generalized. The evidence supports experimenting with planning, environmental changes and boundaries; it does not identify a universal discipline formula.
