Use more than one barrier: restrict or remove betting apps, block gambling websites, and enroll in the self-exclusion scheme available where you live. If your bank offers a gambling-payment block, ask about adding that too. Phone settings can help, but no single device control is established as a guarantee against every way of accessing gambling.
Choose barriers that cover different routes
Each option works at a different level. Phone settings can restrict selected apps or named websites on that device; gambling-blocking software is designed to cover gambling services across supported devices; self-exclusion applies to participating gambling businesses in a specified jurisdiction; and a bank block may restrict some gambling transactions.

These measures are most useful as layers: if an app restriction does not cover a website, or a device block does not cover a different device, another barrier may still apply.
Block betting apps and websites on an iPhone
Restrict named gambling websites
- Open Settings > Screen Time > Content & Privacy Restrictions. Turn on Content & Privacy Restrictions if prompted.
- Open App Store, Media, Web, & Games > Web Content.
- Select Limit Adult Websites, then add gambling sites under Never Allow.
This approach uses URLs you enter; it is not a gambling-specific list. Add the addresses you know, including relevant variations, and check the settings periodically. Apple’s documented route is for iPhone; menu names and availability may differ across software releases and Apple devices. See Apple’s Screen Time instructions for iPhone.

Limit app access or downloads
Screen Time also provides controls for app access and App Store purchases and downloads. Use the available restrictions to limit access to betting apps and make downloading them less convenient. These settings are controlled on the device, so they should be treated as friction rather than an unchangeable lock. For an added practical safeguard, you could ask someone you trust to keep the Screen Time passcode; this is a personal arrangement, not a guarantee from Apple.
Block apps on Android—and understand the web filter
Block an installed app
Android’s device parental controls can set app limits or block a selected installed app. Open the device’s parental controls and choose the betting app to restrict; exact labels and availability can vary by device and Android version. Google’s guidance is at Set up parental controls on an Android device.

Do not mistake explicit-content filtering for gambling blocking
Google’s web content filters address explicit sites and search results, not gambling specifically. Google says the feature applies only in specified versions of Google app, Chrome, Android System WebView, and other apps that integrate it; explicit content can still appear elsewhere. It is therefore not a substitute for a gambling-specific blocker or self-exclusion.

Consider gambling-specific blocking software
The UK Gambling Commission distinguishes gambling-specific software, designed to block gambling websites, from general blocking software that can filter broader categories or set permissions. Its guidance mentions GamBan as an example. A Michigan Gaming Control Board announcement dated 23 April 2026 describes Gamban as blocking gambling websites and applications on Android, iOS, Windows, and macOS. That description is not an independent comparison or test of blocker effectiveness.
The same Michigan announcement offered free Gamban licenses to Michigan residents for one to five years, covering unlimited household devices. Those terms are specific to the state announcement, not a universal offer; check current eligibility and availability before relying on them. Use the self-exclusion scheme for your jurisdiction
Self-exclusion is a formal agreement with gambling businesses or a scheme to prevent access under stated rules. The UK Gambling Commission describes it as “a tool used by those who have recognised that their gambling is harmful to them.” Coverage depends on the scheme and the operators it includes; it does not automatically block every gambling service worldwide.
Great Britain: GAMSTOP and other schemes
GAMSTOP lets a person self-exclude from online gambling websites and apps operated by businesses licensed in Great Britain through one request. It is listed as a free scheme by the Gambling Commission. Separate schemes cover settings such as betting shops, casinos, bingo premises, and adult gaming centres, so online registration should not be assumed to cover those venues. Start with the Commission’s self-exclusion guidance and its list of multi-operator and national schemes.

Australia: BetStop
BetStop is Australia’s National Self-Exclusion Register for licensed online and phone wagering providers. Its service pages say registration takes about five minutes, requires identity details, and has a minimum exclusion period of three months. You can nominate up to five support people. While you are registered, providers should not open new wagering accounts, accept bets, or send marketing; the service says existing accounts should be closed and credit refunded. The person registering must make the decision—someone else cannot register on their behalf. See BetStop and its What to expect page for current terms.
Elsewhere
Look for the official gambling regulator or national self-exclusion register in your country or state, and confirm which operators and types of gambling it covers. The Great Britain and Australia examples above do not establish a universal scheme or worldwide coverage.
Ask your bank about gambling-payment blocks
The UK Gambling Commission says many banks offer a way to block gambling transactions. Availability and operation differ, and a bank block should not be assumed to stop every payment route. Ask your bank whether it offers the control, how to enable it, and what transactions it applies to. The Commission includes this option alongside blocking software and self-exclusion in its guidance on viewing account history and restricting gambling activity.

Make the setup harder to undo
- Remove betting apps you no longer want available, then apply the platform controls that limit access or downloads.
- Add known gambling website addresses to device restrictions, or use a gambling-specific blocker whose platforms and coverage suit your devices.
- Register with the official self-exclusion scheme that applies to your location and the operators you use.
- Ask your bank about a transaction block if available.
- Where it feels appropriate, ask a trusted person to help maintain the settings or support your decision. Keep in mind that device settings may be changeable by the device holder.
Before relying on any one barrier, check its scope: which apps, sites, devices, operators, payments, or locations it covers, and who can change or remove it.
