Facebook and Instagram offer separate controls, and a block is not a guarantee that every trace of contact or visibility disappears. On Facebook, you can block a profile from Settings and privacy; you can also block messages without blocking the whole profile. Instagram’s documented block caveat is that the person may still see your likes and comments on public posts or posts from accounts they follow. The current Instagram Restrict steps and effects are not established here, so check the app’s current controls rather than assuming they match Facebook’s.
Choose the control that matches the problem
| Goal | Control | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| Stop many interactions with a Facebook profile | Block the profile | Facebook blocking limits many interactions, but there are documented exceptions, including some group and mutual-friend activity. Facebook Help Center. |
| Address unwanted Facebook messages without blocking the whole profile | Block messages, or report a message | Facebook treats message blocking and reporting as messaging options, separate from profile blocking. Facebook Help Center. |
| Block someone on Instagram | Use Instagram’s block control in the app | One documented caveat: the blocked person can still see your likes and comments on posts from public accounts or accounts they follow. Instagram Help Center. |
| Restrict someone on Instagram | Check Instagram’s current in-app help and controls | The current menu path and effects are not confirmed by the available official guidance, so this article does not guess at them. |
How to block someone on Facebook
Use the Blocking settings on desktop
- Click your profile picture.
- Select Settings & privacy, then Settings.
- Under Audience and visibility, select Blocking.
- In the Block users area, enter the profile name and follow the prompts to block it. You can also review the blocked list and unblock a profile from this area. See Facebook’s Blocking settings instructions.
These are Facebook’s documented desktop labels. Mobile menus and labels may differ, and the interface can change.
What Facebook blocking does—and does not do
A block limits many ways that profile can interact with you on Facebook, but it is not a universal visibility switch. Facebook notes that existing message history remains in your inbox. In a group conversation that includes the blocked person, you may still see their messages. Content involving mutual friends, including photos and tags, may also remain visible. Some group and event activity can persist, and third-party games and apps do not inherit the block. Blocking one profile also does not automatically block other profiles the person may create. Marketplace reviews and ratings have their own exceptions. See Facebook’s explanation of what blocking does.
Block Facebook messages without blocking the profile
If the problem is unwanted or uncomfortable messages rather than the person’s wider Facebook activity, Facebook provides separate message-blocking and message-reporting options. These do not mean the person’s whole profile has been blocked. Use Facebook’s message-blocking and reporting guidance to find the relevant messaging controls.

Block someone on Instagram—and understand the visibility caveat
Use Instagram’s block control in the app and confirm the profile you intend to block. The official guidance available for this topic establishes a specific residual-visibility exception: someone you block can still see your likes and comments on posts shared by public accounts or accounts they follow. It does not establish that the person can see all of your profile or content, so do not treat that narrow caveat as a blanket statement about everything that remains visible. See Instagram’s blocking visibility guidance.
What Instagram Restrict does and how to find it
The current official guidance available here does not establish Instagram’s Restrict menu path or precisely what Restrict changes. Because those details can change, use Instagram’s current in-app information or Help Center to confirm the control before relying on it. Do not assume that Restrict has the same scope or effects as blocking on Facebook or Instagram.

Review other privacy controls if you need a wider boundary
If your concern is broader than one account, Facebook groups related controls under Audience and visibility. These include settings for profile details, how people find and contact you, posts, stories, followers and public content, and profile and tagging. Availability can vary with profile type. See Facebook’s privacy settings overview.
