To stop a Windows 11 notification from popping up without losing it, turn off Show notification banners for the app and leave Show notifications in notification center on. Find both controls at Start > Settings > System > Notifications. Windows Security alerts have separate category controls, and notices requiring immediate action may still appear.
Choose what you want to silence
| Option | Scope and duration | Where notifications remain | Exceptions |
|---|---|---|---|
| Turn off an app’s banners | One app; stays set until changed | Notification Center, if its separate setting remains on | No general exception stated for per-app banner settings by Microsoft Support |
| Turn off an app’s notifications | One app; stays set until changed | Notifications from that app are suppressed | No general exception stated by Microsoft Support |
| Do not disturb | Many apps; can be temporary, scheduled, or condition-based | Other notifications go to Notification Center | Alarms, reminders, and apps allowed in priority settings may still show banners |
| Change Windows Security notification categories | Selected Windows Security categories | Depends on the category and alert | Windows Security notices requiring immediate action will always be received |
Microsoft describes the per-app control as: “Show notification banners: enable or disable pop-up banners for notifications.” See Microsoft’s Notifications and Do Not Disturb in Windows guidance.
Turn off banners for a particular app
- Open Start > Settings > System > Notifications.
- Under Notifications from apps and other senders, select the app you want to change. Expand its entry if needed to see its options.
- Switch off Show notification banners.
- To keep alerts available for later, leave Show notifications in notification center switched on.
This changes how the app’s notifications appear; it does not turn off delivery to Notification Center. If you want to stop all notifications from that app, switch off the app’s notifications instead.
Turn off notifications more broadly
To suppress notifications across Windows, use the main Notifications switch on Start > Settings > System > Notifications. This is broader than hiding banners: it turns off notification delivery rather than merely keeping popups off the screen. For Microsoft’s details on notification settings, see Notifications and Do Not Disturb in Windows.
Use Do not disturb for a quiet period
If you want fewer interruptions across apps without changing each app’s persistent settings, turn on Do not disturb from Notification Center. You can also set its automatic activation conditions under Settings > System > Notifications. Notifications not allowed through are sent to Notification Center.
Check the priority settings if banners still appear: alarms, reminders, and apps you allow as priority notifications may still show banners while Do not disturb is on. Microsoft’s Windows notification guidance explains the available schedules, conditions, and priority behavior.
Adjust Windows Security notifications
- Open the Windows Security app.
- Select Settings > Manage notifications.
- Review the categories for Virus & threat protection, Account protection, and Firewall and network protection, then change the relevant notification options.
Microsoft says Windows Security notices that require immediate action will always be received. On a work- or school-managed device, an administrator may restrict some of these controls; the page will show a notice when a restriction applies. If so, contact your organization’s IT administrator. See Microsoft’s Windows Security App Settings guidance.

Privacy settings are separate from banner controls
Windows privacy options—such as advertising ID, app launch tracking, and suggested content—do not control whether notification banners appear. Change banner presentation under Settings > System > Notifications; review privacy options separately under Settings > Privacy & security. Microsoft describes those options in General privacy settings in Windows.
