You can filter many ad domains on a Samsung Galaxy phone by setting a filtering provider hostname in Android’s Private DNS settings. It is DNS-level filtering, not a new One UI 9 feature confirmed by the available documentation, and it will not block every ad.
What this setting does—and what it does not
Private DNS is an Android capability. Android’s security documentation describes DNS-over-TLS support on Android 9.0 and later, including a mode that accepts a provider hostname. Samsung exposes the setting in Galaxy’s Connections menu. That does not establish that One UI 9 introduced a dedicated in-app ad blocker. Android documentation · Samsung support
A filtering DNS resolver blocks requests to domains on its blocklists. Because it works at the domain level, it can affect DNS requests from apps across the phone without installing a dedicated blocker. A generic Private DNS provider does not necessarily filter ads; use a provider that explicitly offers ad-domain filtering.

Set a filtering DNS provider on your Galaxy
- Open Settings.
- Tap Connections.
- Tap More connection settings.
- Tap Private DNS.
- Select Private DNS provider hostname, if that option is available.
- Enter the hostname supplied by your chosen filtering DNS provider, then tap Save.
Samsung documents this menu path, but labels or availability can vary with device and software version. One current how-to gives dns.adguard-dns.com as an example filtering hostname; it is an example, not a Samsung recommendation. Confirm the hostname with the provider before entering it. What Private DNS can and cannot block
DNS filtering can prevent connections to domains listed by the resolver, but it cannot reliably distinguish an ad from other content when both come from the same domain. It also does not remove page elements or provide the same controls as a browser-level blocker. For example, a current Android ad-blocking guide notes that DNS filtering does not solve ads in the official YouTube app. Unstore’s guide to Android ad blocking
Other approaches have different coverage and trade-offs. A local VPN-based blocker can filter through an Android VPN connection, while a browser blocker applies within a supported browser. DNS filtering avoids installing a dedicated blocker, but its domain-based limits still apply. These approaches are not interchangeable, and the available sources do not establish a tested product winner.

If apps or websites stop connecting
A filtering provider may block a domain an app needs, or the hostname may be mistyped or unavailable. Return to Settings > Connections > More connection settings > Private DNS, select Automatic, and tap Save to restore the default setting. If service returns, check the filtering provider’s troubleshooting guidance or blocklist controls before trying the hostname again.
