To block adult websites on a phone, use the built-in web restrictions for iPhone or Android; for a child’s phone, manage them through the parent controls available for that platform. Add router filtering to cover devices on your home Wi-Fi, and SafeSearch to filter explicit search results. No single setting guarantees blocking across every app, browser, and network, so choose controls based on who manages the phone and where it will be used.
Choose a method based on who uses the phone and where
Phone settings are a good starting point for a device-specific filter. For a supervised child, a parent-managed account can make controls easier to oversee. Router controls apply to devices connected to that home network, while search filtering targets search results rather than every adult website.
- For an iPhone: Screen Time offers an adult-site category filter or a stricter approved-sites-only option.
- For Android: Web content filters can block explicit sites in supported apps and versions; the coverage is not universal.
- For a child’s phone: Use the platform’s parental controls or supervised account settings where available.
- For home Wi-Fi: Router family controls can add network-level filtering, but they do not follow the phone onto cellular data or another Wi-Fi network.
These controls help restrict access; they do not make it impossible. The official platform and router documentation cited here does not establish a success rate or complete coverage across every app, browser, and connection.
1. iPhone: limit adult websites with Screen Time
For a child in Family Sharing, a parent or guardian can manage the child’s Screen Time restrictions from their own Apple device. Apple’s documented route is Settings > Family > child’s name > Apps & Websites > Restrictions > Filtering under Websites. Choose Limit Adult Websites to filter adult content while retaining general web access. You can also add specific websites to the blocked list.

Labels and paths can differ on older operating-system versions. Apple describes the available filtering choices as “Limit Adult Websites or Ask to Browse.”
2. iPhone: allow only approved websites
If you want a tighter restriction than category-based filtering, choose Approved Websites Only in the same Screen Time website-filtering settings. This creates an allowlist: sites must be approved to be accessible. It can also restrict legitimate sites the user needs, so add required websites deliberately and expect to maintain the list.
3. Android: turn on the on-device web content filter
On a supported Android device, open Settings > Parental controls > Web content filters, then turn on Block explicit sites. You can also enable Filter explicit search results for an additional search-results layer.

- With advanced Deco Mesh Technology, units work together to form a unified network with a single network name. Devices automatically switch between Decos as you move through your home for the fastest possible speeds
Availability depends on Android and app/provider versions. Google lists support for Google app 16.42 or later, Chrome 140.0.7332.0 or later, Android System WebView 139 or later, and other web providers that integrate the feature. Check the current Android parental-controls instructions for supported providers and setup details.
This is not a phone-wide guarantee: Google cautions that “Explicit content may still show on other apps, devices, or browsers.” When explicit-site blocking is enabled, Chrome sites are sent to Google for checking, which is a privacy consideration for people deciding whether to enable it.
4. Android: manage a child’s supervised account with Family Link
For a child using a supervised Google account, Family Link lets a parent manage parental controls across the child’s devices. Google also describes device-level web content filters for supervised users. Set the controls on the child’s account and device, then check that the web filters are enabled on the phone and in the browsers the child actually uses. Exact availability and controls can depend on the device and supported apps; consult Google’s Android parental-controls guidance.

5. Enable SafeSearch or explicit-search filtering
Search filtering is useful as a separate layer, not as a replacement for website blocking. On Android, enable Filter explicit search results in the Web content filters settings when available. Search services may also offer their own SafeSearch control.

6. Use Google Family Wi-Fi controls at home
Google says Family Wi-Fi on Nest Wifi Pro, Nest Wifi, and Google Wifi supports adult-content blocking for grouped devices. In the Google Home app, use Family Wi-Fi to group the phone and apply the adult-site blocking control. The feature applies on that network, not when the phone switches to cellular data or connects to another Wi-Fi network. See Google’s Family Wi-Fi documentation for supported products and setup.

Device identification can interfere with network controls. Google says Family Wi-Fi features cannot be used with devices using a private or randomized MAC address. If a phone is not recognized or filtering does not apply, check its Wi-Fi privacy setting and whether the router can identify it.
7. Configure your router’s parental-control categories or domain rules
Some router systems let you apply an adult-content category filter or enter specific domains. TP-Link documents category controls and full-domain rules for supported router and Deco products, but features vary by model and service. Use the router’s own instructions to select the correct category or add the full domain; TP-Link’s troubleshooting guide recommends checking both when a site remains accessible or is classified incorrectly.
Router filtering covers traffic through that router, not the phone on cellular data or another network. It also depends on the device being correctly identified, which can be affected by randomized MAC settings. A blocked or allowed domain rule may require the complete domain rather than a partial name.

8. Combine controls and test the actual phone
For broader practical coverage, combine controls with different scopes: phone-level restrictions for use away from home, a supervised account for parent oversight, and router filtering for devices on the home network. Add search filtering if you also want explicit results reduced.
- Apply the phone setting: Use Screen Time on iPhone or the supported Android Web content filters.
- Set the child-account controls if relevant: Manage a supervised Google account with Family Link or the child’s iPhone through Family Sharing.
- Set home-network filtering: Group the device in the router’s family controls and check that its MAC-address privacy setting does not prevent identification.
- Check coverage on the actual phone: Test the browsers and apps the user relies on, then check separately on home Wi-Fi and cellular data. Confirm that the settings remain enabled after switching networks.
- Adjust misclassified or accessible domains: Review the router’s selected category and exact domain rule, or use the phone platform’s available website controls.
Testing helps uncover gaps in your chosen setup; it cannot prove that every explicit site or app is blocked.
Quick Recap
What these methods do—and do not—cover
| Method | What it helps filter | Main limitation |
|---|---|---|
| iPhone Limit Adult Websites | Adult websites through Screen Time’s web controls; selected sites can also be blocked. | It is a platform filter, not a guarantee across every app or connection. |
| iPhone Approved Websites Only | Websites not on the approved list are restricted. | Required sites must be added, and the list needs maintenance. |
| Android Block explicit sites | Explicit sites in supported, integrated apps and providers. | Google warns explicit content may still appear in other apps, devices, or browsers; Chrome sites are sent to Google for checking when the feature is enabled. |
| Family Link | Parental controls for a child’s supervised Google account across devices. | Available controls depend on the device and supported apps. |
| SafeSearch or explicit-search filtering | Explicit search results from supported search services. | Does not block direct access to every adult website. |
| Router family controls | Devices connected through the configured home network. | Does not cover cellular data or other Wi-Fi; device identification can be affected by private or randomized MAC addresses. |
| Router categories and domain rules | Categories or specific full domains, where the router model supports them. | Availability varies by model and service; category classification can miss sites or block legitimate ones. |
| Combined controls | Layers phone, account, search, and home-network restrictions. | No reviewed source establishes complete blocking across all apps, browsers, and connections. |
