Start with the parental controls or content filter in your router or mesh Wi-Fi app. If your equipment does not offer a suitable filter, configure a family-safe DNS service on the router. These options can reduce access to adult websites for devices using your home Wi-Fi, but they are not foolproof; SafeSearch can add a separate layer for search results.
Choose a filtering method
Check the controls already available on your router or mesh system before changing DNS settings or buying equipment. The right option depends on your model, the devices you want covered, and whether you need category controls or a simpler adult-content filter.
| Option | What it does | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Router or mesh parental controls | Applies the manufacturer’s web, category, or adult-content controls to some or all devices on the network. | Whether controls apply network-wide or by profile, which categories can be selected, and whether the feature is available on your model. |
| Filtering DNS on the router | Routes domain lookups through a service that blocks categories such as adult content. | Current provider addresses, IPv4 and IPv6 support, and whether the service requires an account or additional configuration. |
| SafeSearch | Filters explicit content in supported search results; some filtering services can enforce it. | It complements website filtering but is not a general-purpose blocker for every website. |
Check your router or mesh app first
Look in the app or administrator interface for labels such as Parental Controls, Web Filter, Adult Block, or Safe Browsing. Menus and device coverage vary by manufacturer and model, so use the instructions for your exact equipment rather than relying on a universal menu path.
Official instructions are available for Google Family Wi-Fi, TP-Link HomeShield, Linksys Safe Browsing, Motorola content filtering, and ASUS Safe Browsing. Feature names and availability can differ across product lines and regions.
#1 Best Overall

- AX1800: Enjoy smoother and more stable streaming, gaming, downloading with 1.8 Gbps total bandwidth (up to 1200 Mbps on 5 GHz and up to 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz). Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
- CONNECT MORE DEVICES: Wi-Fi 6 technology communicates more data to more devices simultaneously using revolutionary OFDMA technology
- EXTENSIVE COVERAGE: Achieve the strong, reliable WiFi coverage with Archer AX1800 as it focuses signal strength to your devices far away using Beamforming technology, 4 high-gain antennas and an advanced front-end module (FEM) chipset
- OUR CYBERSECURITY COMMITMENT: TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement.
After enabling a filter, confirm which devices or profiles it covers. If the router supports schedules or category selections, choose settings that fit your household rather than assuming the default covers every use case.
Configure filtering DNS on the router
If your router supports custom DNS settings but lacks a suitable built-in content filter, you can point it to a filtering service. OpenDNS recommends setting up FamilyShield on a home router. Its published IPv4 addresses are 208.67.222.123 and 208.67.220.123; see the OpenDNS setup guide for router instructions and its test-settings link.

CleanBrowsing’s Family Filter guide lists the IPv4 addresses 185.228.168.168 and 185.228.169.168. CleanBrowsing says this filter blocks adult content, pornography, and mixed-content sites, and forces SafeSearch on Google, Bing, and YouTube. Consult its setup guide for the current configuration steps, including IPv6 instructions.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Open the router’s app or administrator settings and find the internet, WAN, or DNS settings. The exact label and location depend on the model; follow its manufacturer’s instructions.
- Enter the filtering provider’s current DNS addresses in the router’s DNS fields. Do not add an unrestricted secondary resolver, since devices may use it instead of the filter.
- Check whether the provider requires an account or other network configuration, and review its IPv6 instructions if your network uses IPv6.
- Save the configuration. Reconnect a test device to Wi-Fi or renew its network settings if it continues using the previous DNS settings.
- Use the provider’s test procedure or try a known blocked category to confirm that filtering is active.
Router interfaces and provider requirements can change. Use the provider’s current guide rather than copying DNS values from an older setup page or applying instructions meant for a different router.

Use SafeSearch as an additional measure
SafeSearch is mainly for filtering explicit results in search. Google describes it as a way to help avoid most adult websites, while noting that no filter is perfect. Google’s SafeSearch instructions explain its feature; its Family Wi-Fi information also describes SafeSearch in that product’s context. CleanBrowsing says its Family Filter forces SafeSearch on Google, Bing, and YouTube.
Because SafeSearch deals with search results rather than all web traffic, use it alongside router filtering when you need broader coverage.

Verify what is covered—and what is not
Test from a device connected to the home Wi-Fi after making changes. Check that the device is using the configured network and that its settings are not overriding the router’s DNS or filtering controls. If filtering does not appear to work, recheck the router settings, confirm the device reconnected, and follow the service’s test instructions.
A router-level filter does not establish that every connection from every device is covered. A device using mobile data instead of Wi-Fi is outside that home-network setting. The official setup guidance cited here does not establish one universal procedure for bypasses involving VPNs, private DNS, or every encrypted DNS configuration, so check the documentation for your router and devices if those are a concern.

Check IPv6 as well as IPv4 where relevant. CleanBrowsing publishes separate configuration instructions for both. Disabling IPv6 can affect network connectivity and should not be treated as a generic fix; follow model-specific guidance and understand the network trade-off before changing it.
Set realistic expectations
Filtering can reduce access to adult content, but it cannot guarantee that all explicit material will be blocked. Google says, “The internet is massive and no filter is perfect, but SafeSearch helps avoid most adult websites.” Motorola also cautions that its Adult Block filter is not 100% accurate.
The sources cited here do not provide comparable measured blocking rates, so there is no evidence-based way to rank these options by effectiveness. Compare documented features instead: whether configuration is built into your router, which devices or profiles are covered, whether categories are customizable, whether SafeSearch is included, and how IPv6 and encrypted DNS are handled.
A new router is only worth considering if your current equipment cannot provide the controls you need. Many routers already support content filtering or custom DNS, so check your model’s documentation before replacing it.
