The right way to block a website depends on where you need the restriction to apply. For a child’s Apple device, use Screen Time’s website controls; for a child’s Google account, set site permissions in Family Link; for a family using Microsoft devices, use Family Safety with Edge; and for a managed workplace or school browser, an administrator can use Chrome URL policies. Network-level Bing SafeSearch can filter search results, but it does not block arbitrary websites.
Choose the narrowest control that matches your goal, then check which browsers, devices, accounts, and domain variations it covers.
Choose the right kind of website block
Website restrictions differ in scope and purpose. A rule for a child’s account may follow that account in a supported browser, while a device setting applies on the configured device. Managed Chrome policies are for administrators, and a network SafeSearch rule filters search results rather than blocking a named site.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems| Need | Best fit | Key limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Block or allow a specific website on a child’s Apple device | Apple Screen Time, under the child’s Apps & Websites settings | The documented experience requires version 27 or later on relevant devices. Apple Support |
| Manage a child’s browsing in Chrome | Google Family Link site controls | A rule may not cover a subdomain or a differently ending domain. Google For Families Help |
| Filter family web access on supported Microsoft devices | Microsoft Family Safety with Edge and Family Safety apps | Filtering depends on the supported Edge setup; unsupported browsers are blocked when filtering is enabled. Microsoft Support |
| Restrict websites in organization-managed Chrome | Chrome Enterprise URL blocklist and allowlist policies | Requires administrator control of managed Chrome policy. Google Chrome Enterprise and Education Help |
| Filter explicit results from Bing for users on a network | Router or proxy configuration for strict Bing SafeSearch | This filters Bing results, not all visits to arbitrary websites. Microsoft Support |
Before setting a rule, identify who owns the control: the parent or family organizer, the device owner, an organization administrator, or the network administrator. Also decide whether the goal is to block one domain, filter a content category, or limit search results.

Block a website on an iPhone, iPad, or Mac
Apple’s Screen Time controls let a family organizer block or allow specific websites on a child’s device, or apply a broader web-filtering option. Apple’s current guide says the described Apps & Websites experience requires version 27 or later of iOS, iPadOS, macOS, watchOS, or visionOS, with relevant family devices updated. See Apple Support’s guide to blocking or allowing apps and websites for applicability details.
Block one specific site
- On the parent or organizer’s Apple device, open Settings.
- Tap Family, then the child’s name.
- Open Apps & Websites, then Restrictions and Filtering under Websites.
- Open the website list, select the site, and choose Block Website.
Apple’s UK support instructions, published September 15, 2026, document this path and option. Labels and availability may vary with the device’s software and region; consult Apple Support UK’s parental-controls instructions.

Choose a broader web filter
- Unrestricted Access: Use when you do not want the website filter to impose a general limit.
- Limit Adult Websites: Use for a broader adult-content filter, rather than as a precise block for one named site.
- Approved Websites Only: Use when the child should be limited to a narrow set of permitted sites.
Apple says Ask to Browse is on by default for children under 13 and Limit Adult Websites for children under 18 on the cited UK page; age settings vary by country or region. Those defaults do not replace checking the child’s actual settings.
Manage a child’s sites in Google Family Link
Google Family Link provides Chrome content filters for a child’s Google account, including options to try blocking explicit sites and to block or allow specific sites. Set the restriction through the child’s account controls described in Google’s Chrome and child Google Account help.

Check domain variants
Google warns that a site permission does not automatically apply to a site with a different beginning or ending. A rule for a main domain may not cover a subdomain or a country-code version. After adding the restriction, check the exact address the child might use and add separate rules for relevant variants if needed.
Use Microsoft Family Safety for family web filtering
Microsoft Family Safety’s web and search filtering is designed for family members using supported environments: Windows, Xbox, and mobile devices with Microsoft Edge and the Family Safety apps installed. Microsoft says turning on Filter inappropriate websites enables filtering in the supported browser, currently Edge; unsupported browsers are blocked while filtering is enabled to prevent bypass through those browsers. See Microsoft’s Family Safety web-filtering instructions.

This is a family-account and supported-browser approach, not a universal URL filter for every app. If the person can use a different browser or device, confirm that it is covered by the supported setup. Microsoft’s app-blocking guidance also says restrictions must be configured for each relevant app, device or platform, and family member; see Microsoft’s app-blocking help.

Block URLs in managed Chrome at work or school
Chrome Enterprise administrators can use URL blocklist and allowlist policies to control access in managed Chrome. This is an administrative policy path, not a setting available to every person using a personally managed Chrome browser. Review how block and allow rules interact and inspect the effective policy values; do not assume a block rule overrides every allow rule. Google says Chrome must restart after policies are applied. Follow Google’s Chrome Enterprise and Education policy guidance.

Use network configuration for Bing SafeSearch, not general blocking
If the goal is to filter explicit results in Bing for people on a network, Microsoft documents configuring a router or proxy to map www.bing.com to strict.bing.com. Its guidance also describes DNS configuration to enforce SafeSearch. The result is a search-results restriction for Bing; it does not prevent users from visiting arbitrary websites directly or searching through other services. See Microsoft’s SafeSearch guidance.
Router menus and DNS setup vary by model and firmware. Use this approach only if you administer the network and can configure the relevant router or proxy; buying a router alone does not establish that a website is blocked.
Quick Recap
Check whether the restriction works as intended
- Test the exact website address, then check likely subdomains and alternate domain endings where relevant.
- Confirm the person is using the browser, account, device, and app covered by the control.
- For a family filter tied to a supported browser, verify that the required companion app and browser are installed and that filtering is enabled.
- For Chrome organization policies, confirm the effective block and allow values, then restart Chrome.
- For network SafeSearch, test Bing search results separately from direct visits to websites; they are different restrictions.
