To make yourself an administrator, add your 64-bit Steam ID to the Members: section of the server’s generated config_remoteadmin.txt file, using the format SteamID64@steam: owner. Save the file, restart the server, then press M in-game to open Remote Admin. The server’s own generated configuration file is the final authority because paths and keys can change between releases.
How SCP: Secret Laboratory admin authentication works
SCP: Secret Laboratory uses Remote Admin for server moderation and administration. Your account is normally identified by a SteamID64, a 17-digit numeric identifier tied to your Steam account. The server looks for that identifier in the Members: section of config_remoteadmin.txt. The text after the colon assigns a role, such as owner, admin or moderator.

A listed Steam account can authenticate through Steam, so it does not normally need the Remote Admin password. A password override can still exist in the file, but community administrators report that relying on it is buggy compared with SteamID authentication.

- Members: associates an identity with a role.
- Permissions: maps individual administrative actions to roles.
If your ID is listed correctly but the role has no permission for a particular action, Remote Admin may open while that action remains unavailable. Use the roles and permission mappings already present in the generated file rather than inventing new names without checking the file’s syntax.
What you need before changing the file
- Access to the machine or hosting panel that runs the server.
- The server’s listening port, because configuration is stored in a port-specific folder.
- Your own SteamID64, not your display name, account name or shorter Steam ID format.
- A text editor that does not add rich-text formatting.
- The ability to stop and restart the server.
Stop the server before editing. Although some hosts write changes while a process is running, a restart is required for the server to load the updated Remote Admin configuration, and stopping first prevents the process from overwriting your changes during shutdown.
Step-by-step: add yourself as an administrator
1. Find your SteamID64
SteamID64 is a 17-digit number. A SteamID lookup service can convert your account identifier, or you can join your server and read the identifier printed by the server console. Copy the complete number exactly. Do not paste your Steam profile name, profile URL, SteamID3 value, SteamID32 value or a number with spaces.
Before continuing, compare the copied value with the identifier shown by the server console when you connect. This catches the common mistake of looking up a different Steam account or copying a shortened identifier.
2. Stop the server
Use the server console, service manager or hosting panel’s Stop control. Wait until the process is fully stopped. If your panel displays a save or shutdown status, wait for it to complete before opening the file.
3. Open the configuration folder for the server port
The configuration is normally inside a folder named for the server port. For a server using port 7777, the paths described by current community and hosting guides are:

Replace 7777 with the port your server actually uses. If you run several servers, each port has its own configuration directory. Editing the file belonging to another port will not change the server you join.

On Windows, enter %appdata% in File Explorer’s address bar to open the roaming application-data directory. On Linux, the leading dot in .config means the directory is hidden in many file managers; enable hidden files or use a terminal and the exact path. A hosted panel may not expose the operating-system path at all, so use its file manager and look for the generated Remote Admin file.
4. Open the generated Remote Admin file
Open config_remoteadmin.txt in a plain-text editor. Do not create a blank file in a random directory. If the file is missing, start the server once, stop it cleanly, and inspect the newly generated configuration folder. The generated file provides the current keys, indentation and role names for your installed version.
Make a backup copy before editing. Keep the backup outside the active configuration folder or give it a different extension so the server does not try to parse it as another configuration.
5. Add your Steam account under Members:
Find the existing Members: block. Add one line using this exact pattern:
76561198xxxxxxxxx@steam: ownerReplace the example digits with your complete SteamID64. Keep the @steam suffix, the colon, the space after the colon and the role name. The official Tech Support Wiki format is a Steam 64-bit ID followed by @steam:, then a space and the defined role.
A practical example with a non-real placeholder pattern looks like this:

6. Remove sample and placeholder members
Generated files often contain example IDs to demonstrate the syntax. Remove those examples unless they are genuine accounts that should retain access. A leftover placeholder is a frequently reported reason for roles not being assigned correctly, especially when the file was copied from a guide or an older server.
Keep only identities that you intentionally authorize. A line containing an old owner’s ID, a test account or a copied example can grant access to the wrong person if the identifier happens to be valid.
7. Confirm the role and its permissions
Most generated configurations describe roles such as owner, admin and moderator. Read the role definitions and the Permissions: block in your own file. The role name in the member line must match a role that the file defines; capitalization, spelling and punctuation matter.

Do not assume that a role called owner has identical permissions in every release. The configuration generated by your server is more reliable than an old forum post. If you create a custom role, add its permission mapping in the same syntax and indentation as the existing definitions.
8. Set the password override appropriately
If you are using SteamID authentication, set the Remote Admin password override to none in the generated configuration, when that key is present. Community moderators advise against depending on the password override because it has been reported as buggy. A correctly listed SteamID should authenticate without a password prompt.
Do not remove unrelated settings while changing this value. Preserve the key name, indentation and capitalization shown in the generated file. If your version uses a different spelling or does not include the setting, follow that file’s format instead of adding a guessed key.
9. Save without changing the format
Save as plain text, retaining the filename config_remoteadmin.txt. Check for accidental extensions such as .txt.txt, smart quotes, tabs where the file expects spaces, or characters inserted by a word processor. Configuration parsers can silently ignore a malformed line.

Before closing the editor, verify all of the following:
- Your SteamID64 has all 17 digits.
- The line ends with
@steam: role, not a bare ID. - The role is defined in the file.
- Example IDs have been removed.
- The file is in the folder for the correct port.
- No unrelated lines were deleted or re-indented.
10. Restart and test Remote Admin
Start the server again and wait until it has completed startup. Join with the same Steam account whose ID you entered. Press M to open the Remote Admin panel. The panel should show the commands allowed by your assigned role.
If the panel opens but a command is missing, the identity lookup succeeded and the remaining issue is the role or permission mapping. If the panel still requests a password or treats you as an ordinary player, work through the troubleshooting section below before changing more settings.

For the question “how do I make myself admin,” the Steam form is the relevant one. The suffix is not decorative: a bare SteamID64 is commonly reported as a failure because the server cannot determine which identity provider should validate it.

The server asks for a password after the SteamID was added
- Confirm that the member line includes
@steamand follows the exact spacing shown in the generated file. - Check that the ID is your 17-digit SteamID64, not a username or another Steam ID format.
- Verify that you edited the configuration folder belonging to the port you joined.
- Inspect the password override and set it to
nonewhen using SteamID authentication, if the generated file provides that key. - Stop and restart the server after saving; reconnect rather than testing an already-running session.
The panel opens, but I have no useful commands
This usually means the account was identified but the assigned role lacks the required permissions. Check the role name in the member line and compare it with the Permissions: block. A moderator role may intentionally have fewer actions than an admin or owner role. Do not solve a permission mismatch by adding random keys; use the role definitions already generated for your version.
Nothing changes after editing the file
- Look for a second installation or a second port. Servers with multiple ports generate separate configuration directories.
- Confirm the active file is named exactly
config_remoteadmin.txt. - Check that the hosting panel saved the file to the container’s live configuration directory rather than a downloadable local copy.
- Review the server console for parse errors after restart.
- Compare your edited block with the untouched example in a fresh generated file if you accidentally changed indentation.
The role works for another account but not for mine
Compare the working member line and yours character by character. The most common differences are a missing @steam suffix, one incorrect digit, a trailing character copied from a profile link, or a role name that is not defined. Read the ID printed when your account joins the server and replace the manually entered value with that exact number.
I copied an old guide and its keys do not exist
Community Steam discussions and hosting guides can be several years old. File layout, setting names and permission definitions may change with game updates. Use the configuration generated by the installed server version as the baseline, and change only the member entry and settings that your file actually contains. If a guide conflicts with the generated file, follow the generated file.

Security practices for server owners
Grant the smallest role that fits
Use moderator for routine player-management duties when that role is sufficient. Reserve admin and owner for people who need broader control. A role assignment is effectively access to the commands mapped to that role, so avoid giving every helper the highest level.
Keep the member list deliberate
Remove former staff, test accounts and copied examples. Review the list after staff changes and whenever you migrate the server. Because authentication is tied to the SteamID rather than the visible username, changing a display name does not revoke access.

Protect the configuration file
The file reveals which accounts have administrative access and may contain other sensitive server settings. Limit operating-system or panel access to trusted people, keep backups private, and avoid posting the complete file in public support threads. Share only the relevant redacted lines when troubleshooting.
Back up before upgrades and port changes
Keep a dated backup of the working configuration before updating the game server, changing ports or moving between machines. A port change normally means a different configuration directory, so copy the intended member and permission settings into the newly generated folder, then inspect the new file for syntax changes instead of blindly replacing it.
When a hosted panel uses a different layout
Managed hosts often expose a web file manager rather than the Windows or Linux paths above. The same logic applies: stop the server, locate the live configuration directory for the selected server instance, open config_remoteadmin.txt, edit Members:, save, and restart. One hosting layout documented for SCP: Secret Laboratory uses /home/container/Config, but that path is not universal.
If a panel offers separate instances, templates or worlds, select the instance whose port you use in-game. Downloading a file, editing it locally and uploading it to a different instance will produce no visible change. After uploading, reopen the file in the panel to verify that the line persisted before starting the server.

Change your role
Stop the server, edit the role name after your Steam identity, save, and restart. For example, change account@steam: owner to account@steam: moderator only if moderator is defined in the file. Test the resulting command set in a fresh connection.
Remove yourself or another member
Stop the server and delete that identity’s complete line from Members:. Remove any duplicate entries for the same account, save, restart, and reconnect. Deleting a line is preferable to leaving an unused account with a lower role because it makes the access list unambiguous.
Recover from a broken configuration
If the server fails to load Remote Admin after an edit, stop it and restore the last known-good backup. If no backup exists, regenerate the configuration by moving the damaged file out of the active folder, start the server once, stop it, and then reapply only the necessary member entry using the new file’s formatting. This may reset custom permission changes, so recreate them carefully from your notes.
Final verification checklist
- The server is stopped while the file is edited.
- The file belongs to the correct port and server instance.
- Your complete SteamID64 is present.
- The identity ends in
@steam. - The role is defined and has the permissions you need.
- Placeholder and former-member IDs are gone.
- The password override is
nonewhen SteamID authentication is used and that setting exists. - The file remains plain text with the generated indentation.
- The server has been restarted and you reconnected with the matching Steam account.
- Remote Admin opens with M and displays the expected commands.
If all ten checks pass and access still fails, compare the active file with a freshly generated file from the same server version and inspect the startup console. The generated configuration, not an older third-party example, is the authoritative reference for the release you are running.
