Godlike.Host offers hosted ARK: Survival Ascended servers with its own game panel, SFTP access and free DDoS protection, if you would rather not host it yourself.
To become an administrator on an ARK: Survival Ascended dedicated server, set a ServerAdminPassword in the server’s GameUserSettings.ini, restart the server, join it, and enter EnableCheats <AdminPassword> in the in-game console. Authentication is session-based, so you must run the command again after reconnecting. The admin password is separate from the password players use to join.
What ARK admin access actually does
ASA separates ordinary server access from administrative authentication. A join password controls who may connect to a password-protected server. The administrator password, stored as ServerAdminPassword, authorizes cheat and server-management commands after you have connected. Knowing the join password alone does not make you an admin.
Admin access is configured in the server settings file rather than through a separate on/off switch. The commonly described Windows dedicated-server location is:
ShooterGame/Saved/Config/WindowsServer/GameUserSettings.iniAfter changing that file, the dedicated server must be restarted. Once you are back in the game, open the console on PC with the Tab key and enter:

EnableCheats <AdminPassword>Replace the angle-bracketed text with the exact value you saved in the INI file. Guides describing this process generally report no success message when the password is accepted. The practical test is to run a permitted administrative command and observe whether it takes effect.
Admin password versus join password

Use different values for the two credentials. Sharing the join password with players should not expose administrator privileges, while sharing the admin password effectively gives the recipient the ability to use the commands available to an authenticated admin.
Before editing the server
Confirm that you control the dedicated server
You need permission to edit the server configuration and to restart the dedicated server. If a hosting panel manages the files, use its configuration editor or file manager; if you run the server yourself, edit the file on the machine that hosts the dedicated instance. A player connecting to someone else’s server cannot grant themselves access by entering a command.
Identify the correct configuration file
For a Windows dedicated server, community guides consistently point to GameUserSettings.ini under ShooterGame/Saved/Config/WindowsServer/. Make sure you are editing the file belonging to the ASA server instance you actually start. Multiple installations, test instances, or backup folders can contain similarly named files.
Make a reversible change
- Stop the server before editing if your control panel provides a stop option. This prevents the running process from overwriting your change during shutdown.
- Keep a copy of the original
GameUserSettings.iniso you can restore it if the server fails to start or a setting is misplaced. - Choose a password you can enter exactly. The guides do not establish a required length or character set, so do not assume that a particular policy is enforced by ASA.
- Do not post the administrator password in public chat, screenshots, issue reports, or a shared configuration repository.
Step 1: Set ServerAdminPassword in GameUserSettings.ini
- Stop the dedicated server, or use the provider’s configuration editor if it requires the server to be offline.
- Open
ShooterGame/Saved/Config/WindowsServer/GameUserSettings.inion a Windows installation. - Find the
[ServerSettings]section. If the section exists, add or edit the setting within it. If it is absent, create the section header and then add the setting. - Enter the key and value on one line, with no angle brackets:
[ServerSettings]
ServerAdminPassword=YourPrivateAdminPassword- Replace
YourPrivateAdminPasswordwith the value you intend to use. Preserve the spelling ofServerAdminPassword; a differently named key will not authenticate you. - Save the file as plain text. Check that your editor did not create a second extension such as
.ini.txtand that the line remains under[ServerSettings].
If an existing ServerAdminPassword line is present, edit that line rather than creating conflicting duplicates. The guides identify the INI entry as the normal configuration method. A community post and one hosting-panel implementation also show a startup form such as ?ServerAdminPassword=..., but that alternative is less consistently described and should be treated as a secondary, unverified option rather than a replacement for the INI setting.

Step 2: Restart the dedicated server
Restarting is required for the server process to read the new setting. Saving the file while the server continues running is not enough.

- Stop the server cleanly through its service controls or hosting panel.
- Wait until the process is fully stopped, then start the dedicated server again.
- Allow the server to finish loading before attempting to connect. If your panel exposes a live configuration view, confirm that it is launching the same instance whose INI file you edited.
Do not change the password again while troubleshooting until you have completed one clean stop-and-start cycle; otherwise it becomes unclear which value the running process loaded.
Step 3: Authenticate in the ASA console
Open the console on PC
Join the server with your normal player account. On PC, press Tab to open the in-game console, then type the authentication command exactly:
EnableCheats YourPrivateAdminPasswordUse the same capitalization and characters that appear after ServerAdminPassword=. Do not include the angle brackets shown in documentation examples. Submit the command, then close the console or leave it open while testing.
Understand session-based authentication
Admin authentication does not persist after you disconnect and reconnect. Run EnableCheats once during each new session in which you need administrative access. A server restart and a player reconnect are different events: restarting reloads the setting, while reconnecting requires you to authenticate again even when the password has not changed.

Check that authentication worked
Guides commonly report no explicit success message for a correct password. Instead, test a command you are authorized to use and can safely undo. If the command has no effect, stop and troubleshoot the password, restart state, and command syntax before trying destructive operations.
Running administrative commands: the prefix is not settled
Community guides disagree about whether ASA commands should be preceded by cheat or admincheat. Because no official Studio Wildcard documentation for the current ASA build was confirmed for this procedure, neither prefix should be presented as universally correct.

The authentication command itself is separate: enter EnableCheats followed by the password first. The prefix dispute concerns commands run after authentication, not the password-setting key in the INI.
Examples cited in community guides
The following commands are examples frequently listed by guides, not a guarantee that every command behaves identically on every ASA patch:

Apply the prefix accepted by your server, such as cheat SaveWorld or admincheat SaveWorld. Test with the least disruptive command available, and remember that commands can alter progression, creatures, inventory, or the world state for everyone connected.

Troubleshooting by symptom
The password is rejected or commands do nothing
- Compare the value after
ServerAdminPassword=with what you typed. Look for a missing character, an extra space, or a capitalization difference. - Confirm that the line is inside
[ServerSettings]and that the key is spelled exactlyServerAdminPassword. - Verify that you restarted the dedicated server after saving the file. A live process may still be using the previous value.
- Check that you edited the active server’s configuration, not a backup, local single-player file, or another installation.
- Authenticate again after reconnecting; session authentication is not retained between connections.
EnableCheats appears to work, but a command fails
Try the other documented prefix, because guides conflict between cheat and admincheat. For example, test cheat SaveWorld and then admincheat SaveWorld only if your server’s rules allow such testing. Check the command’s spelling and capitalization, and avoid assuming that a command listed for an older build has unchanged behavior in your current patch.
The console does not open with Tab
The documented key in the available guides is Tab on PC. If that key does not open a console, check the game’s current key bindings and the platform-specific controls supplied by your server or game build. The available instructions do not establish a universal console key for every platform, so do not apply the PC procedure unchanged to consoles.
The setting disappears after a restart
Reopen the file after the server starts and inspect whether the line is still present. A control panel may regenerate configuration files, or you may have edited a generated copy rather than the file used at launch. Reapply the setting through the panel’s supported configuration mechanism, then perform another full restart.
A startup parameter was supplied by a panel
Some community material shows ?ServerAdminPassword=... as a launch argument. Because that form is less consistently documented than the INI entry, use the panel’s own instructions and verify the result in-game. Do not assume that adding both forms will resolve a mismatch; first establish which configuration source the server actually reads.
Hosting-panel and non-Windows considerations
The Windows path above is the specific location repeatedly described for a Windows dedicated server. Other operating systems, container images, and managed panels may expose the same setting through a different file path or a web form. The underlying requirement remains the same: the running ASA server must load a ServerAdminPassword value before you issue EnableCheats.

When a panel hides the file system, look for a server-settings editor containing a field named ServerAdminPassword, save it, and use the panel’s restart control. If the panel offers both an INI editor and startup arguments, prefer the documented INI field and record which mechanism you changed. Ask the host’s support team for the exact path or launch configuration when the panel rewrites settings automatically.
Security and operational practice
Keep administrator credentials private
Anyone who knows the admin password can attempt to authenticate while connected. Store it in a password manager or another private location, and use a value different from the join password. Remove it from chat logs and screenshots before sharing troubleshooting material.

Commands such as god, fly, and forcetame can affect how players experience the server. Tell connected players before testing, and prefer a maintenance window or a disposable test instance when you are learning command behavior. Use SaveWorld deliberately; a save command is useful for preserving intended changes but does not replace a separate backup strategy.
Record changes
Note when you changed the password, which server instance was restarted, and which command prefix worked. This small change log helps distinguish an authentication problem from a command-syntax problem after a patch or a hosting-panel migration.
Maintenance after ASA updates
Admin behavior is volatile. The available guidance is largely from third-party hosting and fan guides, several of which were published one to three years ago, and no official Studio Wildcard or ARK wiki page was confirmed for the current build. Command prefixes, the persistence of authentication, the INI key, and the console key can change with patches.
After an update, perform a controlled verification:

- Confirm that
ServerAdminPasswordstill exists under[ServerSettings]. - Restart the server and connect with a non-administrator test account if possible.
- Open the PC console with Tab, run
EnableCheatsusing the stored password, and test a low-impact command. - Disconnect, reconnect, and verify that authentication must be issued again for the new session.
- Record which command prefix the updated build accepts before using administrative commands during normal play.
If a patch changes any of these behaviors, follow the instructions supplied for that build or your hosting environment rather than relying on an older guide.
Administrator setup checklist
- You can edit and restart the dedicated server.
- You identified the active
GameUserSettings.ini. ServerAdminPassword=...is inside[ServerSettings].- The file was saved without an accidental extra extension.
- The server completed a full restart after the edit.
- You joined the server and opened the PC console with Tab.
- You entered
EnableCheatswith the exact configured password. - You tested the command prefix accepted by your build.
- You will authenticate again after every reconnect.
- The administrator password is not the same as the join password and has not been shared publicly.
What is established—and what is not
The INI setting, restart requirement, EnableCheats authentication step, and per-session reauthentication are the consistent elements across the available community instructions. The command prefix is disputed, and the startup-parameter variant is secondary and unverified. Because official current-build documentation was not confirmed, treat these steps as the widely described ASA procedure and recheck them after updates dated beyond October 14, 2026.
