To become an administrator on a V Rising server, add your 17-digit SteamID64 to the server’s adminlist.txt, enable the in-game console, join the server, open the console with ~, and run adminauth. A successful confirmation grants Administrator (SuperAdmin) privileges.
The exact folder depends on whether you host the server yourself or use a hosting panel. File paths and menu labels can vary between game builds, so check the active save-data directory and restart the server after editing when in doubt.
What actually grants administrator access
V Rising does not grant server administration by entering a character name. The server checks the SteamID64 associated with your Steam account. That ID must appear in adminlist.txt, with one ID on each line. After the file is saved, the player still has to authenticate in the game console with adminauth.
There are therefore two separate parts:
- Permission list:
adminlist.txttells the server which Steam accounts are allowed to authenticate. - Session authentication:
adminauthis entered after you join the server and open its console. This activates the permission for your current session.
If either part is missing, the command will not give you administrator privileges. A name, a Steam display name, or an older Steam identifier in the wrong format is not a substitute for SteamID64.

Check these prerequisites first
- You must have access to the server’s files, either on the computer running the dedicated server or through your host’s file manager.
- You need the Steam account that will use the administrator permissions.
- You must be able to edit and save plain-text configuration files.
- You need to join the server after the file is available, because
adminauthis an in-game command.
Solo and private games do not require this server-file procedure. The adminlist.txt method applies when you are administering a dedicated or hosted multiplayer server.
Step 1: Find your SteamID64
Use the 17-digit identifier
Obtain the SteamID64 for the Steam account that should receive admin access. It is a 17-digit number. You can identify it from your Steam profile URL or use a SteamID lookup service such as steamid.io to convert your profile information.

Confirm the account before editing
Check the digits carefully before saving the file. The most common failure is a typographical error or an ID belonging to a different Steam account. If several people need access, obtain and verify each person’s SteamID64 separately; do not try to use display names as labels.
Step 2: Locate the correct adminlist.txt
The correct location is the server’s active Settings directory. The path differs between a self-hosted installation and a provider’s control panel, and some guides identify more than one possible installation path. Use the directory associated with the server’s configured persistent data rather than creating a second file in an unrelated game folder.
Self-hosted server paths
For a self-hosted server, the general location is:

save-data\Settings\adminlist.txtWith no custom persistent-data override on Windows, the usual directory is:

VRisingServer_Data/StreamingAssets/Settings/Because these locations can vary by installation and build, confirm which directory the running server uses for its persistent settings. If you edit a copy that the server never reads, your ID will appear correct but adminauth will still fail.
Hosted server paths
On a hosted server, open the provider’s file manager or configuration area and look for:

save-data/Settings/adminlist.txtHosting panels may present the same directory with a graphical tree, a text editor, or a server-settings section. Follow the panel’s save mechanism; closing an editor without applying or saving the change leaves the old file on the server.
Create or open the file safely
If adminlist.txt already exists, edit that file rather than creating another file with a similar name. If it does not exist, create a plain-text file named exactly adminlist.txt. Watch for accidental extensions such as adminlist.txt.txt, which can be created by desktop editors that hide known extensions.

Step 3: Enter SteamID64 values correctly
Put one 17-digit SteamID64 on each line. The file should contain the number only:
76561198000000000
76561198000000001Use the actual IDs for your administrators; the numbers above are only a formatting illustration and should not be copied as real permissions.
Do not add:
- Steam display names or character names
- Quotes around the number
- Commas or other separators
- Comments on the same line
- The legacy
STEAM_0:1:...identifier
Save the file as plain text. Keep existing valid entries unless you intend to revoke those accounts. A list with several administrators is simply several SteamID64 values, one per line.
Step 4: Apply the file change
Instructions differ on whether the server reloads the list immediately. Some guides report that the change can be applied without a restart, while others instruct you to stop the server before editing. A restart after saving is the cautious, predictable option, especially when you are diagnosing a failed authentication.
- Stop the server if your host or installation requires the server to be offline for configuration edits.
- Save
adminlist.txtin the activeSettingsdirectory. - Verify that the file still contains the intended 17-digit IDs after saving.
- Start or restart the server.
- Wait until the server is fully available before joining.
For a hosted server, use the provider’s documented restart control. If the panel warns that a restart is required after a file edit, restart it rather than relying on a live reload.
Step 5: Enable the in-game console
The console must be enabled before adminauth can work. From the game’s main menu, open:

The exact wording of the checkbox can vary by version. If you do not see the label exactly as written, look for the console setting in the General options rather than assuming the feature is unavailable.
Step 6: Authenticate as administrator
- Join the server whose
adminlist.txtyou edited. - Press
~(the tilde key) to open the in-game console. - Type
adminauth. - Press Enter.
A success message confirms that your account has Administrator (SuperAdmin) privileges. The command must be entered after joining the target server; entering it at the main menu or on a different server cannot authenticate you against the intended server.
Self-hosted and hosted servers compared

How to diagnose “adminauth” not working
1. Recheck the ID and its format
Compare the value in adminlist.txt with the SteamID64 for the account currently logged in. Confirm that it has 17 digits, appears on its own line, and contains no spaces, quotation marks, punctuation, or comments. A character-name entry or a legacy STEAM_0:1:... value will not satisfy the check.
2. Make sure the server read the file you edited
Confirm that you changed the active persistent-data directory, not an unused installation folder. On a self-hosted server, check the configured persistent path. On a hosted server, reopen the file in the panel after saving and verify that your ID is still present. If you found multiple adminlist.txt files, the one under the running server’s persistent Settings directory is the important one.

3. Restart, then reconnect
Even though some instructions indicate that a restart may not be necessary, restart the server as a controlled test. After it is online, leave and rejoin the server, open the console, and run adminauth again. This removes uncertainty about whether the process loaded the edited file before your connection.
4. Confirm the console is enabled
If pressing ~ does not open a console, return to Main Menu > Options > General and enable the console setting. You cannot authenticate through adminauth until the command is entered in that console.

5. Check the server and account context
Make sure you joined the same server whose file you edited and that Steam is signed into the account whose SteamID64 is listed. This matters when you administer several servers or switch between Steam accounts.
6. Treat debug-flag advice as anecdotal
A community report describes adminauth failing even when the ID was listed and suggests checking debug flags in ServerHostSettings.json. That is an anecdotal troubleshooting suggestion, not a confirmed official fix. Do not change unrelated server settings blindly; first verify the ID, path, save operation, console state, and restart.

To add another administrator, append that person’s SteamID64 on a new line and preserve the existing entries. Each person must authenticate from their own Steam account after joining. Do not replace the whole file when you only intend to add one user.
To revoke access, remove that account’s SteamID64 from adminlist.txt, save the file, and restart the server as the safe default. The removed account should then be unable to authenticate on a new connection. Keep a private backup of the previous list if you need an audit trail, but do not leave duplicate or obsolete entries in the live file.
Practical checklist
- SteamID64 is a 17-digit number for the correct Steam account.
- The value is not in
STEAM_0:1:...format. adminlist.txtis in the running server’s persistentSettingsdirectory.- There is one ID per line, with no names, quotes, comments, or separators.
- The edited file was saved successfully.
- The server was restarted when the active reload behavior was uncertain.
- The in-game console is enabled under Options > General.
- You joined the target server before entering
adminauth. - You opened the console with
~and received a success confirmation.
Version and path caveats
Menu labels, installation folders, and reload behavior can change between V Rising server builds and hosting environments. The stable requirements are the SteamID64, the server’s active adminlist.txt, an enabled console, and the post-join adminauth command. When a path or label differs from the examples here, prioritize the persistent settings directory used by the running server and your host’s current control-panel instructions.
