Terraria itself has no built-in administrator account. To become an admin, your server must run TShock; its equivalent of an admin or superadmin is an account in the owner group.
On a new TShock server, copy the setup code shown in the server console (or read tshock/setup-code.txt), join the server, and run /setup CODE. Then create a permanent owner account with /user add USERNAME PASSWORD owner, log in with /login USERNAME PASSWORD, and run /setup once more to disable setup mode.
What “admin” means on a Terraria server
A vanilla Terraria server does not provide an administrator account system. If you start an unmodified server, there is no built-in owner login, permission group, or admin password to configure. The procedure in this guide applies to TShock, the server modification that adds accounts, groups, permissions, and administrative commands.
In current TShock terminology, the highest-privilege account is normally placed in the owner group. Older tutorials often call the same role SuperAdmin and use /auth rather than /setup. Those instructions describe an older naming scheme and may not work on a current installation, so identify the commands supported by the TShock version actually running on your server.

The initial setup account is temporary. It lets you claim setup privileges using a code printed during the first boot. You should then create a named account, authenticate with it, and turn setup mode off. Leaving setup mode active is unnecessary and causes the setup-code notice to appear on later starts.
Before you start
Confirm that the server is running TShock
Look at the server startup console or the files used to launch the server. The commands in this guide require TShock. If you cannot find a tshock directory, a setup-code file, or TShock startup messages, you may be running a vanilla server or a different server mod. Installing or configuring a different mod is outside this procedure.

You need to read the server console during startup and, if necessary, issue a recovery command from that console. With a rented host, the console may be inside the provider’s control panel; with a self-hosted server, it is the terminal or application window running TShock.
Choose the permanent account details
Pick a username that is not shared with ordinary players and a long, unique password. The username and password are entered directly into commands, so avoid spaces and characters that your host panel or shell could interpret unexpectedly. Never paste the password into a public chat or a support screenshot.
Set up the first TShock owner account
Perform these steps in order. The commands are normally entered in the game chat after you have joined the server, unless a step explicitly says to use the server console.
1. Find the setup code
Start TShock and watch the server console during its first boot. TShock prints a setup code there. TShock also saves the code in the server’s tshock folder as setup-code.txt. Open that file if the console output has scrolled away.

Copy the code exactly. Treat it like a one-time bootstrap credential: do not post it in a player channel, include it in a stream overlay, or leave it in a shared screenshot. Anyone who can use the setup code while setup mode is active can attempt to claim setup privileges.
2. Join the server and claim temporary setup privileges
Connect to your Terraria server with the character you intend to use for administration. In chat, run:
/setup CODE
Replace CODE with the value from the startup console or setup-code.txt; do not type the word CODE literally. A successful command gives that connected player the temporary privileges needed to create the first account. If TShock reports that setup is already complete, skip to the login step if an owner account already exists, or use the recovery section below.
3. Create the permanent owner account
While still connected, create a named account in the owner group:
/user add USERNAME PASSWORD owner
Substitute your chosen username and password. The final word, owner, is important: it assigns the account to TShock’s current top-level group. A command such as /user add MyAdmin StrongPassword without the group does not express the owner assignment required by this procedure.
Do not use a player’s existing character name as proof of identity. The account created by this command is the credential TShock uses for administrative permissions; the character you used to run setup is only the vehicle for completing the bootstrap process.

4. Log in to the owner account
Authenticate with the account you just created:
/login USERNAME PASSWORD
Use the exact username and password from the creation command. Successful authentication associates your current player with the account and applies the owner’s permissions. If login fails, check capitalization, spelling, and whether the account-creation command returned an error before trying again.
5. Turn setup mode off
After you have logged in, run:
/setup
Running /setup without a code disables the setup system. It also stops the setup-code notice from appearing on later server boots. This is a separate action from creating the owner account; do not assume that logging in automatically closes setup mode.

How to confirm that you are really an admin
Verification should test authentication and permissions, not merely whether a command produced a chat response.
- Log out or reconnect if necessary, then run
/login USERNAME PASSWORDwith the owner credentials. - Check the TShock response for a successful login rather than relying on the character’s appearance or name.
- Use an administrative function that your server policy permits, such as viewing a TShock administrative command or managing a test world setting. Avoid testing destructive commands on a live world.
- Have a second, non-owner player confirm that ordinary players do not receive the same permission. This catches accidental group assignment or a server that is not loading the expected TShock data.
If your host panel exposes the running console, watch it while logging in and while running the setup command. Console errors can distinguish a bad password from a command that is unavailable in your installed TShock build.
If the setup code is missing or no longer works
The file is missing but an owner account already exists
You do not need the bootstrap code once a permanent owner account has been created. Log in with /login USERNAME PASSWORD. If you have forgotten that password, use the account-management and recovery facilities available to the server operator rather than trying to expose a new setup code publicly.
No owner account exists and setup-code.txt is gone
Recovery requires server-console access. Community guidance for this situation recommends either:

- Registering an account, then changing that account’s group from the server console with
/user group USERNAME owner. - Creating an owner account directly from the server console with the
/user addcommand.
Use the exact syntax accepted by your installed TShock build and watch the console for confirmation or errors. Because console command handling can differ between hosting panels, do not assume that a panel’s text box treats a leading slash, spaces, or password characters exactly like in-game chat. If neither recovery path is accepted, stop and check the TShock version’s command help in the console before making more changes.
The code is rejected
First verify that you copied the newest code from the server’s current tshock/setup-code.txt, not a file from an old server directory or backup. Make sure you joined the same server instance whose console produced the code. A code from one world, container, or host installation will not bootstrap a different instance. If setup mode has already been disabled, the code is no longer the right path; use an existing owner login or console recovery.
Protect the files and credentials that control access
Keep tshock.sqlite safe
TShock community guidance specifically warns operators to keep tshock.sqlite safe. Losing it means having to run setup again. Include it in your server backup plan, protect backups from public download, and do not replace it with a file from another installation unless you deliberately intend to restore that server’s account and permission state.
Do not operate daily as the owner when you do not need to
The owner group has more authority than most staff members need. Community guidance recommends creating a custom staff group with only the permissions required for moderation or routine maintenance, then using that account for daily work. Keep the owner account for server administration, recovery, and permission changes. The exact group-management commands and permission names depend on the TShock build and plugins, so configure them through the tools and help text shipped with your version rather than copying an old tutorial blindly.

Players can register themselves with /register <password>. Registration gives them an account for normal authenticated play; it does not grant an administrative group. Explain this distinction to players so they do not mistake a successful registration message for elevated access.
Handle passwords as server secrets
- Use a unique password for the owner account; never reuse an email, hosting-panel, or personal password.
- Do not send the password through public chat, screenshots, livestreams, or a shared control-panel transcript.
- Limit access to the host console and the directory containing TShock’s files.
- When staff changes, remove or downgrade accounts that no longer need elevated permissions.
Common problems and the right fix
“There is no admin account” on a vanilla server
This is expected for an unmodified Terraria server. The commands in this article are TShock commands. Install and launch TShock for the Terraria version you operate, or use the administration model supplied by whatever server modification you intentionally selected.

/setup CODE says the code is invalid
- Read the code again from the current instance’s console or
setup-code.txt. - Check for copied whitespace, missing characters, and look-alike characters.
- Confirm that setup mode has not already been disabled.
- Confirm that you are connected to the TShock instance whose files you inspected.
/user add fails
Check that you first claimed setup access, that all four command elements are present, and that the username is not already registered. If the console or chat reports an unknown group, your build may use different group names; current guidance uses owner, while older releases used superadmin. Do not change the group name solely because an old web page shows it—verify the command and groups supported by your installation.
Login succeeds but administrative actions are denied
Confirm that the account was created with the final owner argument and that you logged in as that account, not merely as a character with a similar name. Reconnect and authenticate again if the server changed groups while you were online. Review the server console for permission or plugin errors, and check whether a custom permission system has intentionally restricted a command.

The setup message appears on every restart
Setup mode is still enabled. After logging in with the owner account, run /setup without a code. If the notice continues, verify that you are editing and running the same TShock installation and that it can write its files. Do not delete account files to silence the message; that can force another setup cycle.
Current commands versus legacy tutorials
Search results often mix two generations of TShock instructions. Older guides describe /auth [authcode] and an account in a superadmin group. One historical naming convention used “SuperAdmin” for the owner role before Terraria 1.4. Current guides and Pryaxis-maintained documentation point to /setup and the owner group.
| Instruction set | Bootstrap command | Highest group name shown | How to treat it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Current TShock guidance | /setup CODE |
owner |
Use when it matches your installed build. |
| Legacy tutorials | /auth AUTHCODE |
superadmin or “SuperAdmin” |
Historical syntax; do not substitute it without confirming version compatibility. |
TShock release behavior can change, and the exact 2026 behavior of every build is not established here. Treat the commands above as the current documented flow, then use your server’s built-in help and console output if a command is missing or has a different argument order.
A practical ownership workflow for a small server
- Start TShock privately and copy the setup code from the console or
setup-code.txt. - Join with your intended administrator character and claim temporary access using
/setup CODE. - Create a unique owner account with
/user add USERNAME PASSWORD owner. - Log in with
/login USERNAME PASSWORD. - Disable setup mode with
/setup. - Back up
tshock.sqliteand protect the backup. - Create limited staff accounts or groups for routine moderation instead of sharing the owner credentials.
- Tell players that
/register <password>is for ordinary authenticated accounts and does not confer admin rights.
This sequence gives you a recoverable owner identity while minimizing the time that the bootstrap mechanism and highest-privilege account are exposed.
