To make yourself an administrator, join the server once with the player account you want to promote, then run setaccesslevel "YourUsername" admin in the server console. If you run it through in-game chat instead, add a leading slash: /setaccesslevel "YourUsername" admin. The username must be the server account name, and Build 41 and Build 42 may accept different role names.
The two ways to become an administrator
Project Zomboid servers provide two practical routes to administrator privileges. You can sign in with the built-in administrator account created during the server’s first startup, or you can promote an ordinary player account after that account has joined the server. The second route is usually the cleanest when you want to keep playing under your normal character and username.

A hosting-panel password field is not necessarily the same thing as the administrator account already stored by the game server. If a later panel change does not work, change the in-game account password with the server command described below.

Promote your normal player account
1. Start the server and open its console
Start the dedicated server and open either its local console or the live console supplied by your hosting panel. You need a console that accepts server commands, not a normal operating-system command prompt. Keep the server running while you perform the promotion.

2. Join once with the account you will promote
Connect to the server using the player account that should receive administrator rights. The first connection creates the server-side account record. If the account has never joined, the server can return “Player not found” even when the spelling looks correct.
3. Enter the access-level command in the server console
setaccesslevel "YourUsername" adminReplace YourUsername with the exact account username. Keep quotation marks when the name contains spaces or other characters that require them. The command shown here is the concise form documented for dedicated servers; capitalization of the command itself is normally not the cause of a failure, but the account name must identify the correct player record.
4. Use the chat form only from an already privileged session
If you already have enough privileges to execute server commands through game chat, use the same command with a slash at the beginning:
/setaccesslevel "YourUsername" adminThe slash distinguishes a chat command from a console command. Do not paste the slash into a server-console field.

5. Reconnect if the interface does not update
Disconnect and join again when the admin panel or other privileges do not appear immediately. Reconnecting refreshes the account’s session and is the first verification step after a successful promotion.
Log in with the built-in administrator account
A dedicated-server setup creates an administrator account from the credentials supplied during the first start. Hosting panels expose those credentials in different places. Some panels show an administrator password in a configuration page; others document an admin account workflow. Treat a displayed default password as specific to that server installation, not as a universal Project Zomboid password.
Find the credentials
- Open the server setup page or hosting control panel used to create the instance.
- Locate the administrator username and password recorded for the first startup.
- Join the server using those credentials rather than your regular player login.
Once inside with the administrator account, you can promote your normal player by running the chat version of setaccesslevel, provided that account has already joined. Using a separate administrator login also gives you a recovery path if the regular account loses its role.

Why a panel password change may not work
The first-start credentials are used to create the server-side account. Changing a variable in a hosting panel later may leave that existing account unchanged. If the old password is rejected, use the server console while the server is running:

setpassword "admin" "newpassword"Replace admin with the actual administrator username if the account uses a different name. This command changes the stored password for that game account; it is not a change to your hosting-panel login.
Console syntax versus chat syntax

Assuming a role name from another server build |
The help command is the authoritative check for the command syntax and accepted access levels on your running build. It is especially important when a server has been updated or is using an older branch.
Build 41 and Build 42 access levels
Access-level names are not identical between the two major builds. Current Build 42 documentation lists admin, moderator, gm, observer, priority, and user. Build 41 documentation uses a different fixed set that includes overseer and commonly uses none when removing privileges. A command copied from a guide for the other build can therefore be rejected even when the username is correct.

Run help setaccesslevel first if you are unsure which branch the server is running. Do not substitute overseer, none, or user until the server confirms that name.

How to verify that the promotion worked
- Reconnect with the same account used in the command.
- Check whether the administrative interface and commands become available.
- If the interface remains absent, confirm that the account receiving the role is the account you used to join, not a similarly named Steam or display profile.
- Use the server’s help output to confirm that
adminis a valid level for the current build.
A successful command does not transfer privileges between accounts. If you normally join with one username but promoted another, reconnect with the promoted username or run the command again for the account you actually use.

“Player not found”
The target account has probably never joined, or the command contains a display name instead of the server account username. Join once with that account, then copy the exact account spelling into the command. Quotation marks help preserve the full name but cannot correct a wrong name.
The console says nothing or appears to ignore the command
Remove the leading slash when typing in a server console. The slash is only for chat. Confirm that the server is running, that you are using its live console rather than an unrelated terminal, and that the console field is enabled by the hosting panel.
The role is rejected
Run help setaccesslevel (or /help setaccesslevel in chat) and use one of the levels returned by that server. Build 41 and Build 42 do not share an identical role list, so a level copied from another guide may not be valid.

The administrator password is rejected
The password in the panel may describe a later configuration value, while the account was created with credentials from the first startup. If you can access the console or another admin session, run setpassword for the actual administrator username. If you cannot access either, recover the original first-start credentials through the server setup records before attempting further changes.
The admin panel is still missing
Reconnect after promotion. Then verify that the exact account receiving the role is the account used for the current session. A successful promotion of a different account will not add controls to your present login.
Choosing a hosting setup for administration
For this task, the useful differences between hosting routes are administrative rather than marketing claims. Compare the options on the following points before renting or moving a server:
