To become an administrator on a Hytale server, join the server once so your account exists, then run op add <username> or op add <UUID> from the server console or from an account that is already an operator. For a grant that survives restarts, stop the server and edit its generated permissions.json file; Hytale’s official guidance identifies that as the permanent, recommended method. Hytale is in Early Access, so command names and JSON structures can change. Use /help on your build whenever a command behaves differently from the examples below.
What OP status gives you
Hytale uses operator, commonly shortened to OP, status for elevated server permissions. An operator can moderate players, build without ordinary restrictions and manage server configuration or plugins, depending on the permission groups and commands enabled by that server build. OP is not the same as merely being the server owner in a hosting panel: the game server must recognize your player account or UUID as an operator.
Grant OP only to accounts you trust. Anyone with operator access may be able to remove players, change gameplay settings, alter permissions or run administrative commands. If several people help moderate a server, check whether your permission system supports narrower groups instead of giving every helper full OP.
Method 1: Grant OP with the console or an existing operator
The command route is the fastest way to make an account an operator. It works from the dedicated server console, and it can also be run in game by a player who already has permission to grant OP.

Step 1: Join once with the account you will promote
- Start the Hytale server and connect with the account that should receive administrator access.
- Remain connected long enough for the server to create the player record. If the server has never seen the account, a name-based command may report that the player cannot be found.
- Note the exact in-game username, including capitalization, or prepare the account UUID.
Step 2: Run the add command
In the dedicated server console, enter:
op add <username or UUID>
Replace the bracketed text with one value, for example op add PlayerName. Console commands are commonly entered without a leading slash. In an in-game chat or command box, the equivalent may require a leading slash, such as /op add PlayerName; follow the syntax shown by /help in your build.
Step 3: Confirm the grant
A successful command should produce a confirmation in the console or chat. One third-party guide describes a message stating that the username is now an operator, but that wording has not been verified against a specific Hytale build. Look for the actual success response on your server and have the promoted player reconnect or test an operator-only command.

An already-authorized player can run the same command from the game, provided that the account has permission to modify operators. If the command is rejected, use the server console instead; console privileges and in-game privileges can differ by build or host configuration.
Method 2: Edit permissions.json for permanent access
Hytale’s official server guidance describes editing permissions.json as the permanent and recommended approach. The file is located at the root of the server folder and is normally reached through FTP or your host’s file manager.

Before editing
- Schedule a maintenance window and stop the server cleanly.
- Download a backup copy of
permissions.jsonand record the current file timestamp. - Make sure you are editing the active server instance, not a staging folder or an old backup.
- Use a plain-text editor that preserves JSON punctuation and UTF-8 encoding.
Editing while the process is running is unsafe. Guides disagree about whether a live edit is noticed immediately, and a running server may overwrite your change when it shuts down. Stopping first avoids both possibilities.
Find the account entry or operator group
The exact JSON layout is not stable across guides or Early Access builds. Some examples describe a users section keyed by UUID; others describe an OP group that grants a wildcard such as *. Do not paste a template from an unrelated version. Open the file generated by your own server, identify its existing user and group structure, and follow that structure exactly.
- Open the generated
permissions.jsonin the server-folder root. - Locate the section that maps users, groups or operator permissions.
- Add your account using the field names and nesting already present in that file. A UUID is safer than a display name if the format allows it, because names can be changed or mistyped.
- Preserve every existing comma, brace, bracket and quotation mark. Keep the change limited to the new account or group membership.
- Save the file, close the editor and check that it is still valid JSON before restarting.
Because the schema differs between builds, this guide intentionally does not provide a universal block to paste. The generated file is the authoritative template for your installation.
Restart and verify
- Start the server after saving the file.
- Watch the startup log for a JSON parse error or a permissions-loading warning.
- Connect with the account you added and run an operator-only command or a harmless administrative action.
- If the server fails to start, stop it, restore the backup, and repeat the edit against the restored file with corrected punctuation.
Method 3: Temporary single-player or local-world access
Several Hytale guides describe a shortcut for a solo or temporary world: launch with the --allow-op option, then run /op self in the console or chat. Other guides list /op @s for solo mode. These forms are contested and are not confirmed as universal commands.

How the shortcut is reported to work
- Add
--allow-opto the launch parameters used for the local world. - Start the world and open the console or chat command line.
- Try
/op self. If your build reports an unknown command, check/helpand determine whether it supports/op @sinstead. - Test the permission during that session.
These guides describe the shortcut as temporary: OP may disappear after a normal restart. Use the console grant or the permissions file when the account must remain an operator.

If you have console access and need an immediate result, use op add. If the account must remain an administrator, use the generated permissions.json structure after stopping the server. Treat the launch-flag method as a convenience for temporary solo play rather than as a production-server configuration.

Find the correct username or UUID
Using the username
Use the exact username shown by the server when the player joins. Avoid guessing punctuation, spaces or capitalization. If the command says that the player is unknown, have the account connect once and retry after the server records it.

A UUID avoids ambiguity when names change. Community guides point to two ways to locate it:

- Run the available
/uuidcommand while logged in, if your build provides that command. - Inspect the
universe/playersfolder. Player JSON files there contain the username, allowing you to match the file to the account and read its UUID from the file name or contents, depending on the build.
Use /help if /uuid is not recognized. File names and metadata can vary, so confirm the username inside the player record before copying an identifier into a permission entry.
Remove OP access
To revoke the same account later, the most commonly reported command is:

Some guides instead list /deop <player>. Check /help to see which form your server accepts, and use the same console-versus-chat prefix rules as when granting OP. After removal, have the player reconnect or attempt a restricted command to verify that the permission is gone.
If you granted access through permissions.json, remove the account from the relevant user or group entry as well. Otherwise, the file can restore OP the next time the server loads permissions.

Troubleshooting common failures
The server says the command is unknown
- Run
/helpin the console or chat to display commands supported by that build. - Check whether the console expects
op addwithout a slash while chat expects/op add. - Try the alternate documented forms only where they match your context:
/op selfand/op @sare for the reported solo shortcut, not interchangeable guarantees for a dedicated server.
The player cannot be found
- Connect with the target account once, then retry.
- Copy the exact username from the join or server log.
- Use the UUID from the player record when name matching continues to fail.
The JSON edit has no effect
- Confirm the server was stopped before editing and restarted afterward.
- Verify that the file is in the active server folder’s root.
- Compare your change with the surrounding generated structure instead of a guide written for another build.
- Check startup logs for a parse or permissions-loading error.
- Make sure the account is not still listed in a conflicting group with lower or denied permissions.
The server will not start after editing
- Stop any restart loop from your hosting panel.
- Restore the backup copy of
permissions.json. - Start the server to confirm that the backup works.
- Reapply only the necessary change, checking every comma, quote, brace and bracket before saving.
OP works until the next restart
This usually indicates that you used the temporary launch shortcut or changed a live file that was later overwritten. Use a normal op add grant or make the change in the generated permissions.json while the server is stopped, then restart and verify.
Permission levels and build differences
One third-party guide reports that newly created operators receive permission level 2, but that value is not confirmed by an official source. Do not design your moderation policy around a presumed numeric level. Inspect the groups and commands exposed by your own build, and test the precise actions your staff need.
The command variants, JSON nesting, restart behavior and default levels described online are based largely on Early Access-era guides. Hytale updates can rename commands or change permission schemas. Keep a dated backup of a known-working permissions file and recheck /help after updates before applying old instructions to a live server.
Administrator safety checklist
- Grant OP only to named, trusted accounts.
- Prefer UUIDs when your permissions format supports them.
- Keep a backup of
permissions.jsonbefore every edit. - Stop the server before changing the file.
- Test a harmless operator command after each change.
- Remove former staff promptly with
op removeor the supported de-operator command. - Review the server log after grants, removals and restarts.
- Recheck command and file syntax after Hytale updates.
Recommended path
For a running multiplayer server, connect the target account once and grant it with op add <username or UUID> from the console or an authorized operator account. For access that must survive restarts, stop the server and add the account to the structure already present in its generated permissions.json. Use --allow-op and the self-op variants only for temporary solo sessions, and verify every command with /help because Early Access builds do not share a single, permanently reliable syntax.
