Godlike.Host offers hosted DayZ servers with its own game panel, SFTP access and free DDoS protection, if you would rather not host it yourself.
On a DayZ server you operate, admin access is configured in the server files. Set a value for passwordAdmin in serverDZ.cfg, restart the server, join it, and enter #login <password> in chat. BattlEye RCon is a separate remote-administration system with its own password and configuration. You cannot grant yourself admin on a server owned by somebody else.
What “admin” means in DayZ
DayZ has more than one administration path, and confusing them is the main reason login attempts fail. The normal in-game path uses the passwordAdmin setting in the server’s main configuration. After the server starts with that setting, an authorized player authenticates through the in-game chat command #login.

BattlEye RCon works separately. It is an external console connection that uses an RCon password in BEServer_x64.cfg. RCon does not use the value in passwordAdmin, and changing one password does not change the other.
Vanilla administration is deliberately limited. The in-game commands can control certain server and player actions, but they do not provide the broad map, teleport, item-spawning, or player-management interface that many community servers advertise. Those features normally come from an administrator mod, such as VPP Admin Tools or Community Online Tools, installed and maintained for the exact DayZ server version.

Requirements before you change anything
- Ownership or delegated access: You need access to the server’s files or its hosting control panel. A player cannot self-authorize on somebody else’s server.
- A way to stop the server: Use the host control panel or your own service-management method. Editing a live file can be overwritten or ignored when the process is running.
- Configuration access: You must be able to locate
serverDZ.cfg, normally in the server’s installation or profile/configuration area. - A secure secret: Prepare a long, unique password that is not used for your game account, control panel, RCon, or any other service.
- A backup: Copy the original configuration before editing it. Keep the backup outside the live configuration directory so an automated startup process cannot mistake it for the active file.
The exact file browser labels differ between self-hosted installations and game-server panels, but the filename and setting name are the same. If your provider generates configuration files from a web form, use that form rather than editing a generated file that will be replaced on the next restart.
Set up in-game admin access
1. Stop the server cleanly
Stop the DayZ server from the control panel before opening its files. Wait until the panel reports that the process has stopped. This prevents the server from writing an older copy of the configuration over your edit and gives you a known point at which the next startup will read the new value.

Open the file in a plain-text editor and find the passwordAdmin line. Put your chosen value between the quotation marks:
passwordAdmin = "replace-this-with-a-long-unique-password";Keep the setting’s spelling, quotation marks, semicolon, and general syntax intact. Do not add angle brackets around the real password; the angle brackets in documentation indicate a placeholder. If the line already contains a value, replace only the value unless your host’s configuration editor explicitly uses a different format.
Use a password that is difficult to guess and unique to this server. Avoid the server name, clan name, administrator username, a date, or a password posted in a setup guide. Anyone who learns this value may be able to authenticate with #login, so it should be treated as a privileged credential rather than as a casual server setting.

3. Save the file and restart
Save the edited file, close the editor, and start the server again. DayZ reads this configuration during startup; a change made while the process is running does not become active merely because the file was saved. Allow the server to finish starting before joining it.
4. Log in from the game
- Join the server with the account that should have administrative access.
- Press Enter to open the in-game chat input.
- Type
#login your-real-password, replacing the example text with the exact value fromserverDZ.cfg. - Submit the message. Do not post the password in ordinary public chat or paste it where other players can read it.
- Test only the administrative action you need. When finished, enter
#logoutto end the authenticated session.
Do not include the literal words <password>. They describe the position where your password goes. A password containing spaces, quotation marks, or unusual characters can be interpreted differently by a game client or host panel, so use a strong value made from characters your provider supports and enter it exactly as saved.
Commands available after an in-game login
Hosting documentation commonly lists the following commands for a player who has authenticated with #login. Availability can vary with the DayZ build, server configuration, and provider implementation, so treat the list as the vanilla command set to test rather than as a promise of a graphical admin console.

These commands are not equivalent to a full administrator menu. Vanilla DayZ does not generally provide teleporting, arbitrary item spawning, spectator controls, or a comprehensive player database through this login alone.
When you need an admin menu or extra powers
Teleportation, item spawning, player-location tools, and other convenience functions are normally supplied by third-party administrator mods. VPP Admin Tools and Community Online Tools are examples mentioned in DayZ server administration documentation; they are optional add-ons, not replacements for setting a server password.

Plan the mod installation
- Confirm that the mod supports your current DayZ server build and the client build used by your staff.
- Install the mod’s server files and, where required, its client-side package and signed key according to its own documentation.
- Add the mod to the server’s startup/mod parameter in the correct order for your host.
- Restart the server and test with a non-production administrator account before granting broad permissions.
- Review the mod’s permission or administrator-list file. A successful
#logindoes not automatically configure every mod’s internal permission system.
Mods can change commands, files, and security assumptions. Keep a record of the installed version, back up its configuration, and remove or update it deliberately when DayZ updates rather than copying an old configuration into a new release.
BattlEye RCon: a separate administration channel
BattlEye RCon lets you administer the server from an external tool instead of from a player’s chat window. It has its own password, port, configuration file, and connection workflow. Use it when you need a remote console or when your provider’s in-game command support is insufficient.
Configure the RCon file
The RCon configuration is normally named BEServer_x64.cfg. It must be in the same folder as BEServer_x64.dll. The folder used at runtime is controlled by the server’s -bePath and -profiles launch parameters, so a file placed in an unused directory will not be read.
A hosting guide’s example uses settings in this form:

RConPort 2306The port number above is an example, not a universal DayZ port. Use the port specified in your active configuration and open or forward that port only as your network and host require. Make the RCon password different from passwordAdmin; separating the credentials limits the damage if one is exposed.

Connect with an RCon client
- Identify the server’s reachable IP address or hostname.
- Read the active
RConPortvalue from the configuration rather than assuming a default. - Open a compatible remote tool, such as BEC or DaRT, and enter the server address, RCon port, and RCon password.
- Test a harmless console query or informational action before using kick, lock, shutdown, or restart functions.
- Restrict access to the RCon tool and close it when it is not needed.
Some BattlEye installations rename the file after startup to a name such as BEServer_x64_active_<random>.cfg. Documentation describes this as normal. If the active file is renamed, edit the file your running server actually uses and preserve the generated naming pattern rather than creating several competing configuration files.
In-game login versus RCon versus an admin mod

These methods can coexist. For example, a server owner may keep #login for emergency vanilla commands, RCon for remote operation, and a mod for staff workflows. Use separate credentials and grant each staff member only the channel and permissions required for their job.
Troubleshoot a failed admin login
The password is rejected
- Confirm that you edited the active
serverDZ.cfg, not a backup, template, or similarly named file. - Check capitalization, punctuation, quotation marks, and the semicolon on the setting line.
- Confirm that the server completed a restart after the edit.
- Enter the password after
#loginwith no copied placeholder brackets and no leading or trailing spaces. - Ask the server owner or host whether a control panel regenerates the file from a separate settings page.
The command appears to do nothing
Check that the message was entered in the actual in-game chat field and begins with #. Test #logout and then log in again rather than repeatedly pasting the secret. If the login still produces no authenticated state, compare the server build and provider documentation with the syntax they support.

RCon cannot connect
- Verify that the external tool is using the configured RCon port, not the ordinary DayZ gameplay port.
- Check that
BEServer_x64.cfgis in the directory selected by-bePathand-profiles, besideBEServer_x64.dll. - Use the active, possibly renamed BattlEye configuration file when the server creates one at startup.
- Confirm that the host firewall, router, and provider network policy permit the chosen port.
- Re-enter the RCon password exactly and make sure it is not the
passwordAdminvalue.
A vanilla command is unavailable
Not every command listed by a hosting guide is exposed identically by every DayZ release or provider. Check the server log and current host documentation, and avoid installing a mod solely to compensate for a spelling or authentication error. If you need teleporting, item spawning, or a staff interface, use a maintained administrator mod with a matching version instead of assuming vanilla has that feature.

You cannot become an administrator on somebody else’s DayZ server by typing a command, changing local files, or installing a client-side tool. The owner or an authorized operator must provide the relevant passwordAdmin value, configure your account in an administrator mod, or give you an approved RCon account. If they do not grant access, there is no legitimate self-service method to obtain it.

Never ask for or publish an owner’s password in public chat. Request a separate staff credential where the mod or RCon setup supports it, and have the owner revoke it when your role ends.
Protect the credentials
- Keep
passwordAdminandRConPasswordin a password manager or another restricted store. - Do not place either secret in server names, welcome messages, screenshots, public configuration repositories, or chat.
- Use unrelated values for the game-server panel, operating-system account, in-game admin login, and RCon.
- Limit file-panel, FTP, SSH, and RCon access to people who actually administer the server.
- Rotate a credential immediately after staff turnover, a leak, or an unexplained administrative action.
- Review logs and mod permission files so you can identify which account or channel performed a sensitive action.
Security guidance for these values comes from server-hosting practice rather than a retrieved official Bohemia Interactive security statement. The practical rule is still straightforward: anyone who obtains an administrative secret may be able to perform privileged actions, so handle it like a production password.
Important documentation disagreement
Most DayZ hosting guides describe passwordAdmin as the credential used for in-game #login access, which is the setup described above. One hosting source instead claims that the setting authenticates BattlEye RCon and that in-game administration requires a mod. The official Bohemia Interactive configuration page appeared in search results, but its definition of passwordAdmin was not available for verification here.
If a correctly formatted setting, a completed restart, and an exact #login still fail, do not assume that a graphical admin menu should appear. Check the documentation for your server build and host, confirm whether a mod is required, and verify that you are editing the configuration actually loaded at startup. Keep the RCon setup separate while diagnosing the issue; its password and file do not substitute for the in-game setting.
