To make yourself an administrator, run admin add <identifier> 0 in the server console. Replace <identifier> with your player name, online entity ID, SteamID64, or another platform ID accepted by your installation. Permission level 0 is the highest level in the documented 0–1000 scale.
You can enter the command through the in-game console (normally opened with F1), a hosting panel, telnet, or a web dashboard. If none of those routes is available, add your identifier and permission level to serveradmin.xml, the persistent administrator file.

Administrative commands affect every player and the saved world, so first make sure you control the dedicated server rather than an ordinary game client. You need at least one of these access paths:
- An in-game server console opened with F1, where supported.
- Your provider’s dedicated-server console or web panel.
- A telnet interface exposed by the server installation.
- File-manager access to the server configuration, including
serveradmin.xml.
A hosted panel may execute a command as the server itself. In that case, you do not have to be connected to the game when adding an administrator. The panel must still be connected to the correct server instance and finished starting it.

Keep the server build and platform in mind. Command availability and syntax can change between versions, so use help on the installed build if a command behaves differently from the examples here.
The fastest method: use admin add
- Open an administrative console. Press F1 while connected if your build exposes the server console there. Otherwise open the provider’s console, telnet session, or web-dashboard console.
- Choose an identifier. Use your current player name or entity ID for a quick, online-only grant. For an entry that survives name changes, use a SteamID64 or the platform ID supported by your host.
- Run the command. Enter
admin add <identifier> 0, replacing the angle-bracketed value with the actual identifier. Do not type the brackets. - Check the result. Run
help, or another command permitted at the assigned level, and check the panel’s administrator list when available.
For example, the shape of the command is:
admin add 76561198000000000 0The number in that example is only a format example; use the ID belonging to your account. If you are using a name or entity ID, enter the exact value shown by the server.

Choosing the right identifier
The command accepts a player name, entity ID, or Steam ID. The best choice depends on whether the player is online and whether the server supports multiple platforms.

Finding your ID while online
Use the server’s player-ID listing, commonly reached with lpi where that command exists, and copy the row for your account. The server log may also record the identifier when you connect. A provider panel can expose the same value in its player list; select the platform that matches the account you actually use.
Finding a SteamID64 or other platform ID before joining
A Steam profile lookup can provide a SteamID64 for a Steam account. For EOS, Xbox Live, or PlayStation players, use the identifier shown by a compatible host panel or by the server’s own player and log output. Do not substitute a Steam ID for an account that is authenticated through a different platform.

Understanding permission levels
7 Days to Die uses a numeric permission scale from 0 to 1000. Lower numbers have more authority. Level 0 is full or maximum permission; an unlisted player is treated as level 1000, the most restricted state.

The labels for levels such as “super admin,” “senior admin,” “admin,” and “moderator” are common hosting-panel presets, not universal game definitions. Providers can map command permissions differently. If you want unrestricted access for yourself, use 0. For another person, choose the highest numeric level that still supplies the commands they need rather than automatically granting full control.
Becoming admin from a hosting panel
Panel layouts differ, but the operation follows the same sequence:
- Sign in to the account that owns or manages the dedicated server.
- Open the server’s Console, Live Console, Web Console, or similarly named page. Make sure it is the server console, not an in-game chat box.
- Wait until the server has completed startup. A console that is still loading may reject commands or write changes incompletely.
- Paste
admin add <identifier> 0into the command field and submit it. - If the panel has an administrator or permissions page, confirm that the identifier appears there and that the selected platform is correct.
- Reconnect to the game if necessary, then test with
helpor a harmless command allowed to your level.
Some managed hosts run the command as the server, so an online connection is not required. Others require a restart or a panel-specific reload before the updated list is visible. Follow the provider’s displayed reload or restart control instead of repeatedly issuing the command.
Using the in-game F1 console
When your installation supports it, press F1 after joining the server. Enter the command in the console prompt, not in ordinary player chat. The account issuing admin add must already have permission to administer users; being the server owner in an external billing account does not automatically make a game account an administrator.

After submission, check for a success response or run help. If the command is denied, return to the host console or ask the current administrator to grant your account access. A regular player cannot elevate itself merely by typing the command in chat.
File-based fallback: serveradmin.xml
serveradmin.xml is the persistent file that stores administrators and command-permission settings. Use it when you cannot reach a working console but have configuration or file-manager access.
- Stop the server or use the provider’s documented safe-edit procedure. Editing a live configuration can be overwritten when the process shuts down.
- Create a backup copy of
serveradmin.xmlbefore changing it. - Open the file in the host’s file manager or download it for editing.
- Find the existing administrator entries and add your platform identifier with permission level
0, preserving the XML structure and attribute names already used by that server. - Save the file in the original location and ensure the panel reports a successful upload.
- Start or reload the server according to the provider’s instructions, then verify the account from the console or administrator list.
The exact XML layout and reload behavior can vary by game build and hosting provider. Do not paste a syntax example from a different version into the file blindly; copy the format of an existing entry or use the panel’s built-in administrator editor. If an edit disappears after a restart, the panel may regenerate the file, the wrong server instance may have been edited, or the change may not have been saved with valid XML.
How to verify that administrator access works
Verification should establish both identity and permission without risking the world:

- Use a low-impact administrative action only after the account appears in the list.
The documented command set includes actions such as admin remove, kick, ban, saveworld, and shutdown, but a particular build can restrict or rename commands. Use help on that server as the authoritative list before attempting a destructive or disruptive action.

Changing or removing admin access
Remove an administrator
From a permitted server console, run admin remove <identifier> with the same identifier format used when the account was added. If the player’s name has changed, use the stored SteamID64 or platform ID instead of guessing the new name.
Reduce a person’s privileges
Change the administrator’s numeric level through the host’s permissions control or the appropriate entry in serveradmin.xml. A larger number grants fewer permissions. Confirm the resulting level after the panel reloads the configuration.
Recover from an accidental grant
If you granted level 0 to the wrong account, remove that identifier immediately, reload or restart as required, and review the admin list for duplicate entries. Change remote-console credentials if the unintended account had access to them.

Troubleshooting common failures
“Command not found” or “permission denied”
First confirm that the text was sent to the dedicated server console. Ordinary chat does not execute server administration commands. If you are in the correct console, your current account may not yet have permission to administer users. Ask an existing administrator to run the command, or use the host’s file-access fallback.
The name does not resolve
Names can collide, change, or differ in capitalization from the value held by the server. While the player is online, obtain the entity ID from the player-ID listing. For a durable entry, use the SteamID64 or platform ID shown by the log or host panel.

Admin works until the server restarts
A temporary console change may not have been written to serveradmin.xml. Check the file after issuing the command, and follow the host’s save, reload, or restart procedure. Also verify that you edited the active server instance rather than a backup or test installation.
Crossplay account is rejected
Use the identifier for the platform that authenticated the player: Steam, EOS/Epic, Xbox Live, or PlayStation where supported. In a panel, select the matching platform field. A valid SteamID64 will not identify an Xbox, PlayStation, or EOS account.
The panel shows the change but commands remain blocked
Check the numeric level and remember that higher numbers are more restricted. Confirm that the server finished reloading the permissions and that you reconnected to the intended world. Run help to see what the installed build permits at that level.
The file becomes invalid or reverts
Restore the backup, then repeat the edit while preserving the existing XML format. Stop the server during the edit if the provider recommends it, and use the panel’s file manager rather than a text editor that changes encoding or removes XML characters.
