To resize hundreds of images offline, choose a desktop batch tool, set one sizing rule, send the results to a separate output folder, and test a small sample before processing everything. XnResize is suited to straightforward graphical resizing; XnConvert adds other batch actions; ImageMagick is useful when you want repeatable command-line processing.
Choose the sizing rule before you start
Decide what “resize” means for the finished files. For images that should fit within a maximum width and height without changing shape, use a bounding box or longest-side limit. A percentage scales each image proportionally. Exact width and height are appropriate when every output must have those dimensions, but check how the tool handles different source proportions; forcing both dimensions can distort an image.
- Maximum bounding box: keep each image within specified width and height limits while retaining its proportions.
- Longest side: set a maximum for the longer edge, which works well for mixed portrait and landscape collections.
- Percentage: scale each source image by the same proportion.
- Exact dimensions: use when a destination requires a particular canvas size; confirm whether images are cropped, padded, or stretched.
For proportion-preserving results, XnResize says it preserves aspect ratio by default. Its controls include pixels, percentage, longest side, and fitting inside a bounding box. XnView Software: Image Resizer

The XnView pages describe processing on your own computer and offline use; that is the vendor’s description, not an independent privacy audit. ImageMagick’s documentation presents local command-line processing. None of these sources establishes a reproducible speed comparison, so choose based on interface, sizing controls, formats, output behavior, operating system, licensing, and whether the job needs extra actions—not an assumed speed winner.

Resize a folder with a graphical tool
Use XnResize for a straightforward batch
- Open XnResize and add the source images or folder using the application’s input controls.
- Choose the resize mode: pixels, percentage, longest side, or fit within a bounding box. Set the target value and check that aspect ratio preservation is enabled if that is required.
- Choose an output folder separate from the source, and set the output format if you want to convert formats as part of resizing.
- Process a small sample first, then inspect dimensions, orientation, transparency, filenames, format, and visual quality.
- If the sample looks right, run the batch and check the output folder for missing or failed files.

Use XnConvert when resizing is only one step
In XnConvert, add the images, configure a resize action, then add any other needed actions such as crop, watermark, rename, or metadata handling. Set the output destination and format before running the batch. Review the result of each action on a small sample, especially when combining resizing with cropping or format conversion. ImageMagick’s mogrify documentation shows a folder-level pattern for limiting JPEG dimensions:

For safer work, first copy the images to a working folder or use an output pattern that writes results separately. One documented approach is to set an output format or suffix; exact syntax depends on the operation and desired naming. Read the official guidance before adapting it: ImageMagick Mogrify documentation. Commands depend on your shell and file names. Test on copies of representative files, including formats that may need special delegates or support in your installation. Do not assume a command that works for JPEGs will behave identically for animated, transparent, or less common formats.

Protect the originals and verify the results
- Preserve the source: make a backup or choose a separate destination folder. This is essential with
mogrify, which overwrites by default. - Pick a representative sample: include portrait and landscape images, transparency if present, and any unusual formats in the batch.
- Run the sample: apply the final dimensions, format, naming, and destination settings.
- Inspect outputs: compare dimensions and orientation, check transparency and format, open the images, and look for unexpected cropping, distortion, or quality loss.
- Run the full batch: reuse the same configuration, then check for errors and compare the number of completed outputs with the number of inputs.
Processing time depends on the computer, file sizes, formats, and settings. The cited documentation does not provide a reproducible benchmark for a defined machine and image set.
