For a stable RC jet, start with the exact aircraft manual: balance it in the specified flight configuration, use its CG datum and range, and set control throws to its measured baseline. Then verify the radio and linkages before flying. Do not copy another jet’s CG or throws; model-specific settings are not interchangeable.

Balance the jet to its manual—not a generic measurement

The centre of gravity (CG) affects how the aircraft responds in pitch and how much control correction it needs. There is no universal RC-jet CG location: the target depends on the airframe and on where its manufacturer defines the measurement datum. BVM Jets, for example, provides an index of CG and control-throw references for named models, underscoring the need to match the document to the aircraft and version: BVM Jets CG & Throws.

  1. Identify the exact aircraft and configuration. Use the manual for the model and version you own. Install the battery and other equipment required for the specified flight configuration before checking balance.
  2. Find the manual’s datum and CG marks. Measure from the stated reference point; do not substitute a measurement taken from another part of the wing or fuselage.
  3. Support the model at those marks. Use your fingers or a balancing stand that holds the aircraft consistently. Follow the manual’s prescribed attitude and balance criterion.
  4. Adjust equipment position before adding weight. Recheck balance after each change, and secure all components before flight. Use ballast only if the manual’s procedure permits it.

For a concrete example—not a setting for other jets—the E-flite F-16 ARF Assembly Manual specifies a CG 55–65 mm aft of the wing leading edge near the fuselage. It directs the builder to support the aircraft upright at those marks and adjust components until it hangs level or slightly nose-down. The manual notes that battery position or a small amount of weight may need adjustment depending on power and landing-gear configuration; it allows preference adjustments after initial flights. Its wording is direct: “An important part of preparing the aircraft for flight is properly balancing the model.” See the E-flite F-16 ARF Assembly Manual for that airframe’s instructions.

Set control throws with measured surface travel

Control throw is the amount a surface moves in response to a control input. Too much travel can make a jet overly sensitive; too little can limit control authority. Set the manufacturer’s baseline first rather than guessing based on how fast the aircraft looks or feels.

  1. Center and align the controls mechanically. With the transmitter and receiver configured as directed by the manual, center the servos and adjust linkages so the surfaces sit at their intended neutral positions.
  2. Check direction before measuring travel. Move each transmitter control and confirm that the corresponding surface moves in the correct direction. Correct any reversal before proceeding.
  3. Measure at the manual’s specified point. Use a ruler and the measurement point stated by the manufacturer; readings taken at different points on a surface are not directly comparable.
  4. Set the manufacturer’s rates and end points. Use the prescribed high- and low-rate travel values, if given. Confirm that linkages move freely and do not bind at the limits.

The E-flite F-16 ARF manual gives an example of how precise this can be: it measures at the inner or widest point of the control surface and lists aileron high rate at 25 mm up/22 mm down and low rate at 19 mm up/16 mm down; elevator high rate is 10 mm up/down and low rate is 7 mm up/down. These are historic values for that particular F-16, not current or universal RC-jet settings. Use the exact aircraft manual for your model.

Use rates and expo to shape the response

Dual rates, expo and end-point adjustment change how transmitter stick movement translates to servo movement. They do not replace the aircraft’s prescribed mechanical setup or make an incorrect CG safe.

  • Dual rates reduce servo travel for a given stick input. They can provide a less aggressive response when selected, while preserving a separate setting with more travel.
  • Expo changes the stick-to-servo response curve. It commonly reduces response near stick center and increases it toward the ends of stick travel.
  • End-point adjustment sets the maximum travel available in each direction. Use it to meet the manual’s travel limits, not to exceed them.

AMA Flight School explains these functions in Radio Programming Basics. Once the aircraft is safely trimmed, make only small, deliberate adjustments to rates or expo, one change at a time. Record each change so you can restore the previous setting if handling worsens.

Account for airspeed when tuning

A jet can feel different across its speed range. AMA Flight School notes that high-performance models can snap roll if excessive elevator is applied at slower airspeeds, and that ailerons lose effectiveness as airspeed drops. These are reasons to use smooth inputs and avoid trying to solve every handling issue by adding throw. The guidance does not establish a universal high-speed throw schedule or an RC-jet flutter threshold. See AMA Flight School: How Do I Use the Rudder?.

For a first flight after setup changes, keep adequate altitude and room to recover, and avoid abrupt inputs. If you encounter flutter, unusual vibration, unexpected trim changes or another control anomaly, land and inspect the aircraft rather than continuing to tune. Do not treat moving the CG aft or increasing throws as a generic way to improve high-speed stability; any departure from the manual baseline must be specific to the model and made cautiously.
