You can use Dropbox to automatically upload iPhone photos and videos, but Dropbox Camera Uploads is not a whole-iPhone backup you can restore to a new or erased iPhone. For a restorable device backup, use Apple’s iCloud or back up to a Mac or Windows computer. The right option depends on whether you need a separate copy of your media or a backup of the phone’s broader information and settings.
What Dropbox backs up from an iPhone
Dropbox’s Camera Uploads feature copies selected iPhone photos and videos to your Dropbox account, normally into a folder named Camera Uploads. It does not back up the entire iPhone or provide the device-restore backup described in Apple’s instructions. Treat these as separate jobs: Dropbox for a copy of camera media, and Apple’s backup options for restoring a device.
Dropbox says the Camera Uploads folder location cannot be changed in the setting, though you can move uploaded files afterward. Availability may be subject to restrictions set by a team administrator for some accounts. Dropbox’s Camera Uploads instructions describe the feature and its setup.

Turn on iPhone Camera Uploads in Dropbox
- Open Dropbox on your iPhone and tap the account control.
- Open Camera Uploads.
- Choose Upload from, then grant Dropbox access to the photos and videos you want it to upload. The exact permission choices can differ by iOS version.
- Choose what to upload and whether Dropbox may use cellular data. If you limit uploads to Wi-Fi, media will wait for a Wi-Fi connection.
- Turn on Camera Uploads.
- Check the Camera Uploads folder in your Dropbox account and confirm that the expected files arrived before relying on them as copies.
For a large existing photo library, Dropbox documents an overnight-upload option for iOS. Keep Dropbox open, connect the iPhone to Wi-Fi, and plug it into a charger while the upload runs. See Dropbox’s setup and overnight-upload requirements.

Keep uploads moving and check storage
iOS limits background activity to conserve battery, so Camera Uploads may pause or be delayed when Dropbox is not open. If new media is missing, open Dropbox and check the following settings and conditions:
- Background App Refresh: Make sure it is enabled for Dropbox.
- Network access: Check Dropbox’s cellular-data permission and iOS Low Data Mode. A cellular-data restriction or Low Data Mode can affect transfers.
- Power: Keep the iPhone charged and avoid Low Power Mode while troubleshooting background uploads.
- Dropbox storage: Check that the account has enough available storage. Dropbox says insufficient storage can prevent uploads from completing.
These checks address common interruptions, but they cannot guarantee that every transfer will finish in the background; iOS may still delay activity. Dropbox outlines additional Camera Uploads troubleshooting steps.

Choose whether to convert HEIF and HEVC media
Dropbox supports HEIF/HEIC photos and HEVC-encoded MOV videos. Camera Uploads settings can convert HEIF photos to JPG and save non-HEVC MOV video for compatibility with non-Apple devices. Conversion is a trade-off: Dropbox warns that converting HEIF to JPG removes some HEIF features. Keep the original formats if retaining those features matters; choose conversion if compatibility is more important. Dropbox explains its supported photo and video formats and conversion options.
Use an Apple backup to restore the whole iPhone
Apple documents two ways to back up an iPhone for device recovery: iCloud or a Mac/Windows computer. A device backup covers information and settings that are not already regularly synced to iCloud. It is different from simply uploading camera media to Dropbox.

Back up with iCloud
Enable iCloud Backup in the iPhone’s iCloud settings. Once enabled, automatic backups occur daily when the iPhone is connected to power, locked, and on Wi-Fi. Apple provides the current setup instructions in How to back up your iPhone or iPad with iCloud.
Apple provides 5 GB of free iCloud storage, shared across iCloud Backup, iCloud Photos, iCloud Drive, and other iCloud services, according to its documentation accessed October 7, 2026. If the storage is full, the iPhone will not back up to iCloud and new photos and videos will not upload to iCloud Photos. This allowance is for iCloud, not Dropbox. Apple explains what happens when iCloud storage is full.

Back up to a Mac or Windows computer
Connect the iPhone to a Mac or Windows computer with a suitable data cable and follow Apple’s Finder or Windows backup instructions. The cable depends on the ports on both devices, so choose one that fits your iPhone and computer rather than assuming a single connector works for everyone. Apple lets you encrypt a local backup with a password; keep that password safe, because you will need it to use the encrypted backup. Follow Apple’s computer-backup instructions for the appropriate operating system.
Do not confuse iCloud Photos with a device backup
iCloud Photos syncs your photo library across devices. When it is enabled, changes—including deletions—also reflect across those devices. Apple says photos and videos stored in iCloud Photos are not duplicated in iCloud Backup, and advises keeping backup copies of the library. That behavior differs from Dropbox Camera Uploads, which copies media into a Dropbox account, and from a whole-device backup. Apple explains how iCloud Photos works.

Which option should you use?
| Option | What it is for | Where the data goes | Automatic behavior | Recovery behavior |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Dropbox Camera Uploads | Copies selected iPhone photos and videos | Your Dropbox account, usually in Camera Uploads | Uploads can be affected by iOS background limits; overnight uploads require Dropbox open, Wi-Fi, and a charger | Provides access to uploaded media, not a whole-iPhone restore |
| iCloud Backup | Backs up device information and settings not already regularly synced to iCloud | Your iCloud storage | Daily when enabled and the iPhone is connected to power, locked, and on Wi-Fi | Apple’s device-backup option for restoring an iPhone |
| Computer backup | Backs up the iPhone to a Mac or Windows computer | The computer | Started by connecting the phone and following Apple’s backup steps | Apple’s local device-backup option; a password is needed if the backup is encrypted |
| iCloud Photos | Syncs the photo and video library across devices | iCloud Photos storage | Syncs library changes, including deletions | Not a duplicate of those photos and videos in iCloud Backup |
If your goal is to protect camera media, enable Dropbox Camera Uploads and verify the files are present. If you need to restore the phone itself, make an iCloud or computer backup. If you use iCloud Photos, keep a separate copy of important photos and videos because syncing is not the same as an independent backup.
